Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but some of them are system fonts that aren't really regulated for Word, if you're just talking standard fonts.

Other word processing programs, I know, also have limits on the number of fonts allowed. It really irked me back in my Photoshop days because I loaded a ton of fonts for it, and then my word program wouldn't load because there were too many fonts.

I think you're pretty close but I'm no font expert.

Since windows XP, usually any fonts installed in WINDOWS usually goes to word and other office stuff.

There are fonts with really weird extensions that might not work in word, so you will not see them at all in your font selection.
