March 17-23 Wildfire Prevention Week

Corbett Declares March 17-23 Wildfire Prevention Week

HARRISBURG, MARCH 17,2013 –------ Gov. Tom Corbett has proclaimed March 17-23 as Wildfire Prevention Week in Pennsylvania, noting warming temperatures and drying March winds have combined to increase fire dangers across Pennsylvania’s forests and brush lands.

“Last spring brought many brush and woodlands fires, showing us how quickly our wealth of forest resources can be endangered,” Corbett said. “People cause 98 percent of wildfires; a mere spark by a careless person can touch off a devastating forest blaze during dry periods when conditions enable wildfires to spread quickly.”

“Common sense can limit the threat of wildfires,” Corbett said. “When state residents and forest visitors are careless with burning trash, campfires and smoking, volunteer firefighters often pay the price, answering call after call in woodlands that are ripe for damaging, life-threatening wildfires.”

Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) statistics show nearly 85 percent of Pennsylvania’s wildfires occur in March, April and May, before the greening of state woodlands and brush lands. Named for rapid spread through dormant dry vegetation, under windy conditions, wildfires annually scorch nearly 10,000 acres of state and private woodlands.

Anglers, campers and other state forest visitors are reminded open fires are prohibited on state forestland from March 1 to May 25, and when the fire danger is listed as high, very high, or extreme, unless authorized by district foresters. Communities in heavily wooded areas are urged to follow wildfire prevention and suppression methods of the Pennsylvania Firewise Community Program to safeguard life and property.

DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry is responsible for prevention and suppression of wildfires on the 17 million acres of state and private woodlands and brush lands. The bureau maintains a fire-detection system, and works with fire wardens and volunteer fire departments to ensure they are trained in the latest advances in fire prevention and suppression.

For more information on Wildfire Prevention Week activities, contact local district foresters; call the Bureau of Forestry at (717) 787-2925; or visit http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us (select “Forestry” under “Quick Links” then “Wildfire”).

Editor’s Note: The following is a copy of Governor Corbett’s proclamation:

PENNSYLVANIA WILDFIRE PREVENTION WEEK

March 17-23, 2013

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania’s bountiful woodlands and brush lands enrich the lives of both residents and visitors alike on a daily basis, providing irreplaceable habitat for countless flora and fauna species, a sustainable resource of timber and clean water, scenic recreational opportunities; and

WHEREAS, though both are sustainable resources, woodlands and brush lands quickly can be devastated by acts of carelessness. People are responsible for 98 percent of all wildfires, nearly 85 percent of which occur in March, April, and May prior to greening of our woodlands and brush lands; and

WHEREAS, wildfires annually devastate nearly 7,000 acres of state forest and even more private land; and threaten life, property, and the sustainability of our valuable natural resources; and

WHEREAS, wildfire prevention hinges heavily on public understanding and appreciation of these values. Precautions and vigilance must be everyone’s personal charge, so that we can continue enjoying Pennsylvania’s millions of acres of woodlands and brush lands, now and into the future. Communities in heavily wooded areas are urged to follow wildfire prevention and suppression methods of the Pennsylvania Firewise Community Program to safeguard life and property; and

WHEREAS, these commonsense guidelines aid the brave men and women who serve as volunteer forest firefighters of our community volunteer fire companies and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

THEREFORE, in recognition of the importance of protecting our woodlands, brush lands, life, property, and our natural resources, I, Tom Corbett , Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, do hereby proclaim March 17-23, 2013, as WILDFIRE PREVENTION WEEK in Pennsylvania. I urge all Pennsylvanians and visitors to protect our valuable woodlands and brush lands by being meticulously cautious with the use of fire.
    http://gantdaily.com/2013/03/17/corbett-declares-march-17-23-wildfire-prevention-week/

After saying she didn’t have any transportation to the bank, the caller told her they had a friend nearby who could take her.

After the telephone call, the woman contacted police, because she was concerned about a stranger arriving at her residence.
Honda to recall 250,000 vehicles globally for braking problems

TOKYO, MARCH 14,2013 (Reuters) ----- Honda Motor Co Ltd will recall nearly 250,000 vehicles globally, including sedans, minivans and SUVs, due to braking problems, the automaker said on Thursday.

Seven models are affected by the recall. In the United States and five other countries, the Acura RL sedan, Acura MDX crossover SUV and the Honda Pilot SUV will be recalled.

In Japan, the recall will include the Legend sedan and three types of minivans -- the Odyssey, the Elysion, and the Stepwgn.

All vehicles were made between 2004 and 2005 except for the Stepwgn, which was made between 2005 and 2006, Honda spokeswoman Tomoko Takemori said.

The stability assist system in the vehicles may malfunction and the brake could operate even when the driver is not pressing the pedal, said Takemori. The vehicles may also brake more strongly than intended when the system malfunctions, she said.

No accidents or injuries have been reported from the problem, Takemori said.

About 183,500 Pilot, MDX and RL vehicles in the United States are affected by the recall. Honda is also recalling 57,000 vehicles in Japan, including about 42,566 Odyssey minivans.

Cars in Canada, Mexico, Germany, Australia and New Zealand will also be recalled.

Honda declined to say how much the recall will cost or where it got the problematic parts.

Honda shares fell 0.4 percent to 3,725 yen on Thursday, underperforming the Nikkei 225 index <.n225>, which rose 1.2 percent.
  http://news.yahoo.com/honda-re.....417909--finance.html

NY suspect accused of killing mom, raping girl beaten in jail

SYRACUSE, NY, MARCH 16,2013-----Authorities say a man accused of killing a Syracuse woman and raping her 10-year-old daughter during a carjacking was beaten and suffered a broken nose on his first day in jail.

The Post-Standard, of Syracuse, reports that David Renz had a swollen face and tissues stuffed up both nostrils when he appeared in federal court Friday to face a probation violation charge.

His attorneys say Renz was assaulted by other inmates at the Onondaga County Justice Center, where he was taken following his arrest Thursday night.

Sheriff Kevin Walsh told the newspaper he was looking into why Renz was put into a holding area with other prisoners.

Renz faces charges that he abducted the mother and daughter as they left a gymnastics class in the Syracuse suburb of Clay.

Probation officials are still investigating how Renz, who has been charged with possessing child pornography managed to cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet before committing his latest crime.

Renz abducted the school librarian and her daughter as they left a gymnastics class Thursday night at a mall in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, about 150 miles west of Albany, state police said Friday.

Renz bound both victims, raped the girl and drove a short distance to a spot where the girl escaped and was found by a passing motorist, troopers said.

The motorist told 911 dispatchers he saw a man running away, allowing police to quickly send in officers on the ground and a sheriff's helicopter in the air. Renz was caught a short time later near a wooded area.

It was unclear how the girl escaped or when her mother was killed, authorities said.

"We're still trying to piece the timeline together," Trooper Jack Keller said.

The girl was being treated at a hospital Friday. Her mother died from multiple stab wounds.

Renz, 29, had been charged in January with possession of child pornography and allowed to remain free under terms that included staying off the Internet and away from places including schools, parks and arcades. He lost his job at a supermarket, moved in with his mother and hadn't been able to find other work after his arrest, according to court documents.

Federal authorities said he cut his electronic monitoring device off his ankle shortly before Thursday's attacks. Probation officials are investigating whether Renz was able to get around an alert that is supposed to go off if the ankle bracelet is removed, Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney John Duncan said.

Renz was arraigned Friday on murder, rape and kidnapping charges and was held without bail. The lawyer assigned to his case, Ken Moynihan, didn't return a call seeking comment.

The Associated Press generally doesn't publish information that could identify potential sex crime victims and isn't naming the woman to protect the girl's identity.

According to an FBI criminal complaint, agents who went to the North Syracuse apartment where Renz was living in June found in his bedroom four computers that he told them he used to view adult pornography.

Agent Alix Skelton said Renz eventually admitted using the Internet for the past six years to download child porn to a drive on one of the machines, which he turned over to the agents. Technicians determined in November that it had an encrypted hard drive, and Skelton said Renz provided the encryption key. Agents reviewing the drive in December found about 100 gigabytes of child porn comprising more than 500 videos and more than 3,000 images, according to the complaint.

Among the images were two showing sex acts involving prepubescent girls, said Skelton, a member of a unit that targets people involved in online exploitation of children.

Renz was charged Jan. 9 in federal court with possession of child pornography. On Jan. 29, a judge granted a prosecutor's request for an extension of the time required for grand jury action so investigators could continue going over "numerous items of electric media" for additional evidence.

Renz, who authorities said had no prior police record, was released after agreeing to stay at home at night with an electronic monitor and away from any place he might encounter children.

Late Friday afternoon, state police turned Renz over to federal authorities, who will hold him for violating the terms of his release, court documents said.

Duncan said the cases against him will continue in federal and state courts.

The lawyer assigned to Renz in the child porn case, James Greenwald, didn't return a call seeking comment Friday.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013.....cking/#ixzz2Nkt485Cq

Jupiter And Moon Line Up Sunday Night

See Jupiter and moon pair up on St. Patrick's Day

SPACE.com, MARCH 16,2013-----On Sunday evening, revelers can cap their St. Patrick’s Day by enjoying a view of a rendezvous involving two of the brightest objects in the night sky: the moon and the planet Jupiter.

About 45 minutes after sunset on Sunday, the eye-catching celestial duo will be visible in the southwest sky, roughly two-thirds up from the horizon to the point directly overhead (called the zenith).

The moon will be a wide crescent at the time, 34 percent illuminated by the sun, and will sit below Jupiter. At its closest pass — which will occur at around 10:30 p.m. local daylight time along the U.S. East Coast, and around 7 p.m. local time for the West Coast — Earth's natural satellite will be just 2 degrees from the giant planet. (For reference, your clenched fist held at arm's length measures about 10 degrees.)

After its closest approach, the moon, moving at its own apparent diameter per hour, will appear to slowly move away from Jupiter to the east (left). [Amazing Night Sky Photos by Stargazers (March 2013)]

Even without the moon, Jupiter readily attracts attention. It’s the brightest "star" of the night, coming into view high in the southwest during the early stages of twilight. The first-magnitude star Aldebaran flickers into view next, about 5 degrees to the lower left of Jupiter, its orange color helping it to stand out from the deepening dark-blue sky.

Last to appear are the famous Pleiades and Hyades star clusters as the sky darkens from purple to black. The entire array of the moon, planet, bright star and star clusters sits within the constellation of Taurus (The Bull).

Binoculars are perfect for observing the whole Taurus get-together. Even the most ordinary pair will show dozens of Pleiades and Hyades stars, and at least one, two, or three of Jupiter’s four bright Galilean moons (Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa).

Be sure to check out Jupiter on the evening of March 24, when any small telescope will show it closely flanked above and below by two seventh-magnitude background stars in Taurus, masquerading as an extra pair of renegade Galilean satellites.

In a telescope, Jupiter is best observed during early evening when it’s still high and its image reasonably calm. Viewing at such times shows the king of planets as a great big belted ball with tantalizing glimpses of detail.

As the evening grows late, the whole assemblage wheels lower in the west and sets soon after midnight.

Editor's note: If you snap an amazing photo of Jupiter and the moon in the night sky, or any other celestial object, and you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, please send images and comments, including location information, to managing editor Tariq Malik at spacephotos@space.com
   See picture; http://science.nbcnews.com/_ne.....st-patricks-day?lite

Featured items for sale included his favorite sofas and "lots of tools which he didn't have a clue how to use."

The ad stated that there would be no clothing for sale, "as we will have already burned those in the driveway."

It's unknown how much money the was raised by the yard sale or if the woman will be allowed to keep all the funds since in a typical divorce proceeding, a court requires both sides to account for all assets. This would include funds raised from such a sale.

Read more: http://www.wtae.com/news/natio.....x.html#ixzz2Ng3gx8nW

Beware of Utility Company Scams

Scam Alert

Beware of Utility Company Scams

As temperatures drop, watch out for these 3 seasonal hoaxes

by Sid Kirchheimer, AARP, February 22, 2013

The heat is on — beyond what's displayed on your thermostat. During cold weather, scammers increasingly pose as utility company employees and other "energy savers" to try to get your money or valuables or sensitive information for identity theft.

Here's how:

The Shutoff Swindle

In the most common utility con, which happens every winter and during peak air-conditioning season, customers get phone calls warning that their service is about to be shut off because of unpaid bills.

Beware of utility company impostors or independent "energy auditors" that tend to appear unannounced at your front door. — Fresh Picked/Alamy

The callers claim to be billing representatives from your utility company but are actually crooks looking for a quick payoff. They tell you that to avoid an immediate shutoff, you need to settle an overdue bill by providing them with your credit card number or a prepaid debit card.

In recent weeks, utility customers from Connecticut to Hawaii have been targeted in this longtime scheme. But this winter, some utility impostors have been demanding payment for several months' worth of purported unpaid utility service, not just one, as had been the custom. They can be convincing. They may use "spoofing" software that lets them falsely display the name and phone number of your utility company on your Caller ID. But you should know that most utilities will mail at least one, if not several, past-due notices before terminating service. If you get a cancellation notification (especially by phone), always verify it by dialing the customer service number on your utility bill. Don't give any information to the caller.

The Supplier Switch

Have you been told you qualify for a 15 to 20 percent discount on your utility bill if you'll provide your customer account number? Before accepting the offer, know that the likely switch will simply take you to a different energy supplier. (After all, your current supplier already has your account number.)

In many states, customers can switch their electricity or natural gas suppliers. It's possible to compare rates and terms of state-vetted suppliers on the website of your state Public Utility Commission (PUC). But beware: Some suppliers employ telemarketers and door-to-door salesmen to recruit new customers with promises of lower rates for switching. But after a brief introductory period, rates may suddenly skyrocket — and you find yourself locked in a long-term contract with high cancellation fees. Attorney general offices in several states have sued energy suppliers for such bait-and-switch practices.

In some instances, you may be asked only for your name, address and utility account number — not a credit card. But with that information in hand, the new supplier can switch your power service provider, either with your blessing or by "slamming," the illegal practice of switching customers to another provider without their consent. Your best bet: If you're interested in switching energy suppliers, avoid unsolicited offers and instead compare your options at your state'

Inspection Deception

Now is when utility company imposters or independent "energy auditors" tend to appear unannounced at your front door, offering a free inspection of your furnace and thermostat, or a free evaluation of your home's energy leakage. But unless your utility company has notified you in advance or you initiated a request for an audit or inspection, don't let them in.

Assume that unsolicited energy auditors are really salesmen or home improvement hucksters pitching unnecessary expensive products, such as a $4,000 "solar" blanket for the attic that in fact can't live up to its claimed ability to capture the sun's rays through roofing materials. Maybe that's why the Consumer Federation of America cited "free energy audits" as a burgeoning problem in its most recent top consumer complaints list.

Often, self-described inspectors are actually there for a quick burglary — especially if they arrive in pairs. One distracts you while the other scoops up valuables. Or they may be trying to collect your personal information for identity theft. Don't be fooled if inspectors sport official-looking badges (which can be printed from a computer) or wear uniforms (which can be rented or stolen). Unless you expect any energy-related experts, keep your door locked.

Sid Kirchheimer is the author of Scam-Proof Your Life, published by AARP Books

Update +++ GHS's phone has been ringing off the hook with calls (from as far as 3 hours away) regarding the 36 dogs taken in from a breeder recently, thank you Brittany Boyer of WJAC for your great report!!

They are working extra hard & extra hours to give them the care they need to bring them back to good health so that they may find patient, happy, and loving forever homes.

Please keep in mind that these adult dogs, for the most part, have spent their lives in cages and are not house or leash trained. Many have never experienced the simple things like grass, carpeting, or been socialized. They do however like to be held & loved Most are not recommended for homes with small children as it could be too stressful for them.

They understand the desire to know more about these dogs (ie: breeds, ages, availability) by those interested in adopting, but until they are healthy and ready for adoption, the pets at GHS are not viewable (and they cannot answer specific questions about them) while still quarantined.

As they are healthy and available for adoption they will be added to their website before the next open adoption day.
For more info on how to adopt please visit: http://www.gatewayhumanesociety.net/about.html

GHS would like to take this time to say a HUGE thank you to the surrounding communities and businesses for your support & generous donations of dog food in their time of need, the response has been amazing! Their shelves are now bursting with adult dog food, enough to last for possibly a couple of months! The only types they may be in need of soon are Lamb & Rice and Small Breed dry food.

They'd also like to give HUGE thanks to the Doctors & Staff of the Animal Hospital of DuBois for the hours of time and service they personally volunteer to help the shelter, they definitely go above and beyond -- and we couldn't do it without them!

**Several of these little sweeties are now up for adoption

Callaway Designs A 2014 Corvette Stingray Shooting Brake

Old Lyme, CONN., MARCH 15,2013------ The Callaway name is synonymous with truly unique Corvettes, with one only having to look at past creations, such as the Callaway C16 Speedster of 2007, for an idea of the types of masterpieces the company can come up with.

With the reveal of the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, it appears Callaway founder Reeves Callaway and his crew in Old Lyme, Connecticut just couldn’t help themselves from designing another stunning custom Corvette.

This time, Callaway has gone with a shooting brake bodystyle for the Corvette, which, if this early rendering is anything to go by, lends itself rather wheel to the lines of the latest C7 generation.

The shooting brake bodystyle, traditionally a coupe with the tail of a wagon, has undergone a strong resurgence of late, appearing on a number of concepts and product cars in the recent past.

We must admit that Callaway’s take on the design is particularly handsome and we hope the company ends up building one once it finally gets its hands on one of the new Corvettes.

Callaway says its Corvette Stingray shooting brake, dubbed the AeroWagon, will be produced if demand is sufficient. The company is currently taking orders for the vehicle and says the option should cost no more than $15,000.

The rear hatch will feature carbon fiber structural components developed using Callaway’s proprietary Resin Transfer Molding process, so it should be both lightweight and strong.

Callaway also says its AeroWagon will be capable of speeds in excess of 200 mph, though it’s not clear what drivetrain is required. The 2014 Corvette Stingray, which features a 6.2-liter V-8 engine rated at an estimated 450 horsepower, is unlikely to have a top speed above 200 mph, though future versions of the car certainly will.

We’ll bring you the first photos of Callaway’s new AeroWagon as soon as we get our hands on them. If production goes as plans, the first Callaway AeroWagons will be delivered by the fourth quarter of the year. See slides and related videos; http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1082923_callaway-designs-a-2014-corvette-stingray-shooting-brake

WASHINGTON — Following President Obama’s lunch meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill, Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins described the food served and said the president was not able to eat since his “taster” was not present.

“University of Maine recipe for healthy lobster salad — I pointed that out to the president in keeping with the first lady’s initiatives and Fox Family Potato Chips made in Aroostook County where I’m from and wild blueberry pie full of anti-oxidants, see this was a healthy lunch as well. We did have a little ice cream on the pie too, also made in Maine, Gifford’s Ice Cream. So in all seriousness this was well received,” Collins told reporters on Thursday after the meeting at the Capitol.

“Unfortunately, you know, the president can’t,” said Collins when asked if Obama ate at the lunch meeting.

“He looked longingly at it,” Collins continued. “He honestly did look longingly at it, but apparently he has to have essentially a taster, and I pointed out to him that we were all tasters for him, that if the food had been poisoned all of us would have keeled over so, but he did look longingly at it and he remarked that we have far better food than the Democrats do, and I said that was because I was hosting.”

According to a 2009 AFP report, the U.S. Secret Service has “always refused to confirm that US presidents travel with a food ‘taster’, in line with their policy of discretion on all security related issues.”

Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2013/03.....audio/#ixzz2Nd2Nbe8Z

11-Year-Old Girl Will Be Allowed To Play Football

Philadelphia girl will be allowed to play football for Catholic team

PHILADELPHIA, MARCH 14,2013----- – An 11-year-old girl near Philadelphia won her crusade to play football for a Catholic Youth Organization team, after the city's archbishop reversed a boys-only rule.

Caroline Pla has played organized football since kindergarten, but was told last fall the no-girls rule would be enforced in her Bucks County league. She petitioned the archdiocese, leading to Thursday's decision from Archbishop Charles J. Chaput.

"It's a great step for the future of the church," said Caroline's mother, Marycecelia Pla of Doylestown. "Archbishop Chaput is starting with young girls, who are the future of the church, and I thank him for it."

Chaput called the decision "provisional," and said it may be reviewed or revised over time. Several other dioceses already allow girls to play.

"I didn't even really think the rule was going to be changed because of all the things that they said," said Caroline, who turns 12 on Wednesday. "Today is like double (excitement) for Catholics because now girls can play football and there's a new pope."

The Plas had taken their fight to the media, with frequent interviews and TV appearances. But they were not hopeful given their exchanges with the archdiocesan officials, who had expressed concerns about safety and the potential for inappropriate touching. Chaput's decision came after a panel of parents, coaches, pastors and others reviewed the rule and decided it should remain unchanged.

"Alternate options had merit and may be revisited ... to ensure that any CYO sports program fosters an enjoyable and safe atmosphere providing for proper human formation, sportsmanship and Christian maturity," the archdiocese said in a statement.

Pla had played CYO football for the past two seasons, apparently because the rule was overlooked. She had previously played on a Pop Warner team, and could have returned to that public league next year. However, she wanted to stay with friends and neighbors on her CYO "Romans" team.

Marycecelia Pla had the video camera ready after school Thursday and met Caroline, a twin and one of four children, at the neighborhood walking path. That's when her daughter knew the decision probably went their way.

"I think a lot of my teammates know because of texting," Caroline said a short time later. "They've been really excited."

She does not plan to play in high school because she probably won't be big enough to play tackle at that level. She is currently 5-foot-3 and 110-pounds, and made the all-star team last season.

The Women's Sports Foundation believes co-ed training and competition fosters mutual respect, and takes boys and girls out of what one former Olympian called "these straightjackets of gender roles."

"The civil rights laws protecting girls, minorities and the disabled are actually pretty good now," said Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a 1984 swimming gold medalist who is now a Florida law professor and senior director of advocacy for the foundation. "But what's missing is people willing to take a stand and insist on equal treatment for all."

She believes the publicity surrounding Pla's fight "makes it that much less likely that another school or sports league is going to do the same thing."

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013.....stnews#ixzz2NaHGt64h

New Treatment Helps Children's Food Allergies

Children's severe food allergies fade after one doc's new treatment

PALO ALTO, CALIF., MARCH 14,2013------There was a time not long ago when even the tiniest drop of whipped cream could have killed 10-year-old Tessa Grosso. She was allergic to milk, wheat, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts and shellfish. Her food allergies were severe and they made her feel different.

“Some people actually teased me, which is really weird because, like, there isn't really something different except I just can't eat something,” Tessa tells TODAY's Kristen Dahlgren.

Tessa wasn’t even 2 when spilled milk sent her into anaphylactic shock. Despite extraordinary vigilance, she had two more life-threatening reactions, and they took a physical and an emotional toll. Tessa had panic attacks, did not want to leave home and had even stopped eating, her mother said.

“It was awful,” her mother, Kim Yates Grosso, told Dahlgren. “When you process the whole thing you walk out and think, ‘My God, if I wasn't there and if I were five minutes later she would have been dead.’"

Grosso and her husband, Andy, tried to do something about it. The Northern California couple found a doctor working on a treatment called oral immunotherapy, which would be used to try to knock out most of Tessa’s food allergies at once, by desensitizing her to those foods. In just four months last year, the experimental regimen, administered as part of a clinical trial, had worked.

Tessa, under the care of Dr. Kari Nadeau, a pediatric allergy and immunology specialist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., had become the world’s first person to be desensitized to more than one allergen at the same time, according to The New York Times Magazine, which featured the breakthrough in a March 10 cover story.

The magazine described Tessa’s treatment, which involved taking a powerful drug that suppresses allergic reactions and consuming a daily dose of small amounts of the foods she was allergic to. Her parents monitored her for two hours each night, and the doses were gradually increased in the hospital.

Tessa was nervous at first to start the trial.

“The first time my mom and I were walking in I actually said to her, ‘Mom, if I die, it's all your fault,’" she said.

The author of the magazine article, Melanie Thernstrom, had consulted with Nadeau about her own son’s food allergies after seeing him almost die. He began treatment last March.

“This treatment is really amazing,” Thernstrom said on TODAY. “Dr. Nadeau doesn't use the word ‘cure’ because she's a scientist and she's very careful.

“They use the word ‘desensitizing’ the child and having them ‘tolerate’ the food,” Thernstrom said. “But the fact is, from a parent point of view, it is a cure. Your child is eating the food and as long as your child eats the food every day, they're done with their allergies.”

There are, however, required daily maintenance doses so that patients do not regain the allergy, the magazine notes. Nadeau told the magazine that sensitivity can return if someone is off the maintenance doses for three days.

Tessa began the treatment in January 2012, at age 9 and had her last dose on May 4, according to the magazine. Several hours after eating, nothing bad happened, and her friends and relatives went out to celebrate. Tessa had her first taste of ice cream, the magazine said, and she started to have a more positive outlook.

“The biggest change is that I don't have to be scared anymore and I don't have as much anxiety,” Tessa said on TODAY. “And I can just be a normal kid.”
  See video and related; http://todayhealth.today.com/_.....s-new-treatment?lite

Zippo Recalls Lighters Sold On Neo-Nazi Website

Zippo recalls lighters sold on neo-Nazi website

NBC NEWS, MARCH 14,2013------Zippo's German distributor is withdrawing a number of lighters bearing militaristic designs after they showed up on an extremist website that sells anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi clothing and accessories.

Zippo Manufacturing Co., the venerable Pennsylvania company that produced the offensive lighters, said it had no idea the designs carried a negative connotation and apologized for bringing them to market.

One lighter bears the image of a soldier and the word "Landser" — an old German word for infantryman, but also the name of a German neo-Nazi rock band whose members were convicted of hate crimes a decade ago.

Other lighters feature an iron cross — a German military decoration first awarded in the 19th century and appropriated by Adolf Hitler — combined with excerpts from German folk songs.

"The images on the lighters are typical of German right-wing extremists and neo-Nazis, though not so typical of their American counterparts, who are more free to directly use Nazi imagery," said Mark Pitcavage, director of investigative research for the Anti-Defamation League.

Nazi imagery is illegal in Germany.

The Zippo lighters appeared on the website of Versand der Bewegung ("Distributor of the Movement"), an online retailer based in Murnau, just south of Munich. Other items for sale on the website include racist music, anti-Semitic literature, a T-shirt with the legend "Nazis Out — Out of Jail," and an anti-Israel shirt bearing an obscenity. Versand der Bewegung has said it is facing trial in Germany for incitement.

Zippo GmbH, a German distributor that's part of a joint venture between Zippo Manufacturing and a French company, got the offending designs several years ago, though it's not clear who provided them, according to Zippo spokesman Joe Perri. The lighters were made at Zippo's plant in Bradford, about 130 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, between 2005 and 2012, and shipped back to Germany for sale.

Zippo produces more than 10,000 designs a year, including ones tailored to specific U.S. locales and dozens of countries around the world. Though the manufacturer has rejected hundreds of designs that it deemed to be in poor taste or that ran afoul of copyright law, Zippo employees in Pennsylvania and Zippo GmbH had no clue the insignia on the withdrawn lighters could be considered offensive, said Zippo's general counsel, Jeff Duke.

"There was no conscious understanding at all by anybody at our German distributor that this was connected with a skinhead group," he said. "They were terribly mortified when they found out about it, and immediately took steps to withdraw it from the market."

The episode also embarrassed Zippo Manufacturing, an 81-year-old Pennsylvania company whose sturdy lighters were distributed to American GIs during World War II.

"When we found out about this, we were very upset," Duke said. "We told (Zippo GmbH) to get these out of the marketplace and make darn sure it doesn't happen again."

The ADL's Pitcavage called Versand der Bewegung an "extreme right-wing German website" associated with neo-Nazis, and said the lighters' appearance on the website is telling.

"In this full context, the lighters in question are indeed problematic and seem to be an attempt to convey extreme right-wing and/or neo-Nazi sentiments in Germany," he said. "Zippo would be right in recalling them."
    http://www.nbcnews.com/business/zippo-recalls-lighters-sold-neo-nazi-website-1C8879170

Levi's New Waste-Less Jeans From Recycled Plastic Bottles

Would you wear these? Jeans made from recycled plastic bottles

TODAY, MARCH 13,2013-----They don’t look like they’re made from trash – and that’s the whole idea behind Levi’s new Waste-Less jeans.

The company says at least 20 percent of the material that goes into making this denim comes from recycled plastic bottles and food trays. That means about eight 12- to 20-ounce bottles are reborn in each pair.

“It’s good for people and better for the planet,” said Jonathan Kirby, vice president of men’s design at Levis Strauss.

The company plans to turn about 3.5 million recycled bottles and other plastic waste into soft, high-quality denim for its Spring 2013 Waste-Less collection. And just to make sure you don’t miss that fact, Levi’s puts a tag on each pair: “These jeans are made of garbage.”

“We decided to take something that was trash and turn it onto something that was valuable and viable,” Kirby told me. “The end goal is to get people to think a little bit differently about what they do with their waste. We want them to realize that a piece of trash can actually become something else that’s relevant to them.”

Right now, this sustainable denim is being made into jeans for both men and women, as well as the classic Trucker jacket for men. The jeans start at around $68, which Kirby calls “a very fair price for a product of this quality and value.”

How do they do it?
The recycled plastic – brown beer bottles (yes, they’re plastic), green soda bottles, clear water bottles and black food trays – is collected from communities across the country and shipped to a manufacturing plant where it is broken down into tiny pellets and spun into polyester fibers. That polyester yarn is then woven with cotton into denim.

The Waste-Less jeans are thin and lightweight, darker than some other denim. The inside of the jeans also looks different. They’re not the typical blue and white. These are more brown and blue.

“The brown bottles and the food trays give the fabric that unique shade and color,” Kirby explained. “You can actually see the recycled material in the garments themselves.”

Is this really good for the earth?
The recycling of plastic bottles has increased dramatically during the last few years. The International Bottled Water Association recently reported that 39 percent of the plastic water bottles in the United States were recycled in 2011. That’s up from 32 percent the year before.

Of course, something has to be done with all of this waste plastic before recycling truly takes place. It must be made into new products, such as plastic lumber, carpets, new containers or clothing. Environmentalists call this “closing the loop.”

“It’s a great way to make sure there’s an end market for recovered materials,” said Darby Hoover, senior resource specialist with the Natural Resources Defense Counsel. “When consumers put plastic bottles into the recycling bins, this helps ensure that there’s a market for them to actually get turned into useful products.”

Hoover points out that this does not decrease the plastic that’s being used to make new plastic bottles – environmentalists would like to see fewer of them used – but it does help keep some plastic waste out of landfills.

“Using recycled content helps decrease environmental impacts across the board as compared with using virgin materials for manufacture,” Hoover told me.

So what does denim made with trash look at feel like?
Levi’s sent me a pair to wear for a few days.

I asked some friends and colleagues to feel the material. Most described it as “smooth”or “soft.” They were completely surprised when I told them there was recycled plastic in the denim and they all wanted to know more.

One person asked if the plastic in the jeans would melt if ironed or thrown in the dryer. The company assured me they will not.

A long-term commitment to the environment
This is not the first environmental initiative for Levi’s. The company’s Water-Less manufacturing technique introduced in 2011 reduces the water used in the finishing process of some products by as much as 96 percent. The company says the Water

“We don’t just want to reduce our impact on the environment, we want to leave it better than we found it,” said James Curleigh, global president of Levi’s brand in a statement.

Clearly, Levi Strauss believes it can be a leader in eco-fashion. Vice president Jonathan Kirby told me he’s looking into a number of different sustainable clothing options for next year.

“It’s the beginning of something that will hopefully become a bigger initiative for us,” he said.
  See picture; http://lifeinc.today.com/_news.....plastic-bottles?lite

Judge Judy SUED
You Screwed Me Out of
My Fine China!

TMZ Exclusive, MARCH 12,2013------
Judge Judy got a really good deal on some used china and flatware ... problem is the woman who owned the stuff claims the TV jurist essentially stole it right out from under her and now the scorned woman is out for blood.

Here's the lowdown. Judy has a producer named Randy Douthit, who was going through an epically nasty divorce from Patric (that's the way she spells it) Jones. The former couple had some expensive, Christofle tableware.

Jones has filed a lawsuit against Judy, claiming the jurist and Douthit entered into a fraudulent scheme to screw her out of the china and flatware, which she values at $514,421.14.

Jones alleges in the suit, filed by Bev Hills attorney Perry Wander ... Douthit sold Judy the goods for a measly $50,000, without her knowledge or consent. Jones claims Judy knew full well the deal was revenge against her.

And the conspiracy allegations get even worse. Jones claims Randy agreed to reduce his profit participation in the Judge Judy show so he wouldn't have to fork over as much money in the divorce settlement.

Jones wants Judy to either fork over the china and flatware or pay her $514,421.14. She's also gunning for punitive damages.

Judge Judy tells TMZ, "I have not seen any complaint by the former Mrs. Douthit, however, I don't owe this lady a cent. And if this 50-year-old woman would spend her time more productively at trying to find a job, instead of abusing the judicial system with frivolous lawsuits, we would all be a lot better off."

We spoke to Jones' lawyer after he filed the lawsuit today ... and the attorney had a few things to say..

See video;Read more: http://www.tmz.com/2013/03/12/.....uthit/#ixzz2NUe8bKDC
Visit the TMZ Store: http://tmzstore.com

Best Cbituary Ever? Daughter's Tribute To Her Father

Best obituary ever? Tribute to man who 'took fashion cues from no one' goes viral

LONG BEACH, MISS., MARCH 13,2013------A Mississippi man who only sported T-shirts designed by "fashion house Fruit of the Loom" and had a penchant for buttermilk served in martini glasses is bringing thousands of people joy in his afterlife, thanks to an obituary written by his daughter.

Eighty-year-old Harry Weathersby Stamps of Long Beach, Miss., died on Saturday, but his quirky qualities — being a member of a bacon-of-the-month club, outsmarting squirrels — were just starting to take on a life of their own when his daughter, Amanda Stamps Lewis, published his obituary in Mississippi's SunHerald.com.

Harry Stamps "particularly hated Day Light Saving Time, which he referred to as The Devil's Time. It is not lost on his family that he died the very day that he would have had to spring his clock forward. This can only be viewed as his final protest," the obituary read. He also detested "eating grape leaves, 'Law and Order' (all franchises), cats, and Martha Stewart. In reverse order."

But he had many loves, too. He loved women, particularly smart women, including his "main squeeze," wife Ann, to whom he was married for 48 years. And no one has been more shocked by the thousands of pageviews, Facebook shares, and tweets that her husband's obituary has generated than Stamps' main squeeze.

'State of stupor'
"I am still in a state of stupor over all this attention!" said Ann Stamps, 73, who speaks with a southern accent and ends most sentences with "my dear." "In a few days, all of this is going to be over, and I think I'm going to really, really hit bottom."

Ann and Harry Stamps met when they were both teachers at Pascagoula High School in Mississippi. They shared a love for life on the Mississippi coast; they raised two daughters in Long Beach, Miss., and Harry spent most of his career teaching government and sociology at Gulf Coast Community College.

Harry underwent bypass surgery in 2004 and the couple lost their home to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 storm. They had to rebuild, which was a turning point in Harry's health, Ann said.

----Stamps family photo
Harry Stamps and his wife, Ann, lost their home in Long Beach, Miss., to Hurricane Katrina. In this photo outside their damaged home, Harry wears his signature Fruit of the Loom T-shirt and grass-stained Mississippi State University baseball cap.

"Harry had been sick for quite some time. A week or so ago, I sat down and wrote down some facts and I emailed it to both of the girls, and I said, I think I can do this better now than I can later," Ann said. "And I immediately got an email back from [my daughter] Amanda and she said, 'I will take care of the obituary.'"

In the last three years, he needed kidney dialysis. Still, Ann said she wasn't prepared by the obituary her daughter Amanda, who is not a professional writer but an attorney.

"That morning that Harry died, she got up and got on the computer and then she came to me said, 'Mama, please let me do this, it's real important.' And she said, 'I know it's not your style, I know it's not what you would have written, but it's important to me.' Well, I started reading it and I thought, there is no way in the world."

But as she continued to read the obituary Amanda crafted, infused with details about Harry's "life-long love affair with deviled eggs" and "sausages on saltines," his adoration for using his "oversized 'old man' remote control" to "flip between watching The Barefoot Contessa and anything on The History Channel," his insistence on taking "fashion cues from no one" and the demand that in his honor, "you write your Congressman and ask for the repeal of Day Light Saving Time," Ann had a change of heart.

----Courtesy Amanda Lewis--(picture)
Harry Stamps' daughter, Amanda Lewis, said none of her friends believed her when she'd describe her Daddy's huge "old man remote control." She decided to take a photo of it next to her baby girl, Harper, "for scale." "The remote was one of his prized possessions that survived Katrina," Lewis said. "He was very worried that they no longer made those."

Fear of a themed funeral
"Allison, our other daughter, said, 'The thing about it is every word is true.' And Amanda told me, 'Now Mama, when you're gone, we won't have this kind of material. You're boring!'" Ann said, laughing. "He was one of the most unpretentious people that could ever be. And he was a smart, smart man. And he had wit, and he was quick. And as he got sicker and sicker, we lost that, and that was one of the saddest things."

The family is living up to a promise it made in the obituary — "Because of his irrational fear that his family would throw him a golf-themed funeral despite his hatred for the sport, his family will hold a private, family only service free of any type of 'theme'" — and celebrated his life this afternoon in a small ceremony under a sunny Mississippi blue sky.

"There's a beautiful bridge that crosses the Bay of St. Louis. And that's where we're taking his ashes," Ann said before the family went to commemorate Harry. "It is gorgeous."

However, the family did hold open visiting hours for Stamps.

"We had students from '58 and '59 that he taught in high school that came to that visitation and talked about how he influenced them," Ann said. "That's what would have pleased him most. He would not have understood all this other" tweeting and Facebooking of his obituary.
  See pictures; http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_new.....-one-goes-viral?lite

Since Rhode Island is the squid capital of the world – hey, they have to be good at something – chances are the fried rings served there are exactly what they claim to be. Elsewhere, however, they may be serving you deep fried pig anus and calling it calamari.

In January, National Public Radio told a story about a multi-state pork processing company selling pig rectum – referred to, by the industry, as “bung” – as imitation calamari. NPR’s Ira Glass did everything possible to refute his source on the story, but dozens of experts could not shoot down the possibility that people are ordering squid and getting pork bung instead.
Texting And Driving Ban: One Year Later

DUNCANSVILLE, BLAIR COUNTY, MARCH 13,2013 ---- It has been a little more than a year since Pennsylvania banned texting while driving.

Right around 1,300 tickets were given in the entire state last year, and those who give out those tickets say it's not an easy law to enforce.

"I don't think it's made a dent at all. I still see the same number of people texting and driving today as I did two years ago," Amber Dick of Martinsburg says.

Martinsburg native Amber Dick hasn't noticed a change in people's driving habits, and at times she fears for her safety.

"It scares me having three small children in the vehicle with me because at anytime someone can be texting and lose control of their vehicle," Dick says.

According to AAA, more than 1,300 tickets for texting while driving were given in the state, but in our area that number was minimal.

12 tickets were issued in Somerset County, 9 in Blair County and 8 in Indiana County.

Law enforcement officials say spotting drivers texting isn't the problem, proving it is.

"You still see a lot of people doing it. They'll use the excuse that they're dialing people, but some people will be honest and we appreciate that," Duncansville Police Chief Jim Ott says.

Ott says he'd like to see the state ban phone use in vehicles all together.

"The concept that it's safe to text and drive at the same time is ludicrous. It's as dangerous as an impaired driver at times," Ott says.

And some drivers say a $50 fine isn't enough to stop the problem.

"$50 you can make that in a day. I think it should be a $300 or $400 fine," Dick says.

According to PennDOT, the number of distracted driving fatalities stayed about the same the last two years with 59 in 2011 and 57 in 2012. http://wearecentralpa.com/fulltext-news?nxd_id=444742

Officials: Calif. pair made $4M from stolen phones
Shou Lin Wen, Yuting Tan arraigned Tuesday in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif., MARCH 13,2013 ----—A California couple were arraigned Tuesday on charges they collected hundreds of stolen smartphones from across the nation, then sold them in Hong Kong for as much as $2,000 each.

Shou Lin Wen, 39, and his wife, Yuting Tan, 27, made nearly $4 million from the scheme in just eight months, the state attorney general said.

Prosecutors say the couple and unnamed co-conspirators recruited people from homeless shelters as far away as North Carolina to sign up for multiyear service contracts that let them buy multiple smartphones at a discount.

The charges allege the buyers had no intention of paying the service contracts and were paid a small fee for their help.

Wen sat down for an exclusive jailhouse interview with KCRA 3.

"I'm innocent," he said.

He denied the state Attorney General's allegations that he exploited the homeless to get the phones.

Wen said he did not know any homeless people.

"I just buy from Craigslist," Wen said.

Prosecutors say middlemen, who have not been charged, shipped the phones to the Sacramento couple.

They were arraigned in Sacramento County Superior Court on eight felony counts of money laundering, grand theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy. They remained jailed with bail set at $1 million each.

Neither entered a plea.

Their attorney, Patricia Campi, said she had just received the case and couldn't comment.

The arrests resulted from a six-month, multi-state investigation that tracked stolen phones to California, then on to Hong Kong.

The couple were arrested March 6 during an undercover operation by special agents from the attorney general's 2-year-old eCrime Unit.

The agents met the couple in parking lot, where they offered to sell the couple 408 smartphones. Agents say the couple produced $60,600 in cash to buy 163 of the phones.

See video;Read more: http://www.wtae.com/news/Offic.....x.html#ixzz2NSdPe6OF

It was an August morning two years ago when Maggie, a spry, 7-year-old border collie, slipped through the backyard fence of her family's suburban Oregon home. Minutes later, she was dead her neck snapped by a body-gripping trap set by the U.S. government less than 50 feet from the home she shared with the four children who loved her.

"It is an image that will never leave me," Maggie's owner, Denise McCurtain, of Gresham, Ore., said of her death. "She was still breathing as we tried to remove the trap. Her eyes were open and she was looking at me. All I could say was 'I'm trying so hard. You didn't do anything wrong.'"

Maggie's death at a minimum was one of hundreds of accidental killings of pets over the last decade acknowledged by Wildlife Services, a little-known branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that is tasked with destroying animals seen as threats to people, agriculture and the environment.

Next Page

Disguised Jeff Gordon test drives car with a salesman

THE FEED, MARCH 13,2013(CBS News)----- While it might like a perfect fit for you and the price may be right, everyone needs a test drive before they purchase a new car. But what happens when that test drive is being done by NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordon in disguise? The ride of one salesman's life, that's what.

"You are liable for any damages, sir, so please stop the car!" Priceless. The hilarious, thrill ride was posted by Pepsi who write about the hidden-camera prank:

Jeff Gordon and Pepsi MAX go to a car dealership where a disguised Jeff Gordon takes an unsuspecting car salesman on the test drive of his life.

Sure, it's a marketing gimmick, but it's the kind I can get behind. I mean, did you see the look on that poor salesman's face? I honestly felt bad for him, but was still laughing hard. How about all of you? As always, feel free to leave me some comment love below with your thoughts.
   See video;   http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-50.....p;

'I was just freefalling': Golfer plunges into Illinois sinkhole

ST. LOUIS, MARCH 12,2013 ---- Suddenly being swallowed up by the earth on a golf course's fairway drove a wedge between Mark Mihal and a stellar round.

The 43-year-old mortgage broker was counting his blessings Tuesday and nursing a dislocated shoulder sustained four days earlier when he tumbled into an 18-foot deep sinkhole on the 14th hole of the Annbriar Golf Club near Waterloo, Ill., just southeast of St. Louis.

Friends managed to hoist Mihal to safety with a rope after about 20 minutes. But the experience gave him quite a fright, particularly following the much-publicized recent death of a man in Florida who died when his bedroom fell into a sinkhole. That man's body hasn't been found.

"I feel lucky just to come out of it with a shoulder injury, falling that far and not knowing what I was going to hit," Mihal, from the St. Louis suburb of Creve Coeur, told The Associated Press before heading off to learn whether he'll need surgery. "It was absolutely crazy."

Mihal said it was a real downer on what had been a fine outing.

With winter finally nearing an end, "it was the first day to get to play in a long time," he said. "So I wasn't expecting too much."

Golfing with buddies, Mihal was waiting to hit his third shot, some 100 yards from the pin on the par 5, when he noticed a bathtub-looking indentation about knee deep just behind him on the fairway. At just one over par for the round, the golfer with a 6 handicap was on a roll.

Mihal remarked about how awkward it would be to hit out of the odd depression, and then walked over to give it a closer look and took one step onto it.

"It didn't look unstable," he said. "And then I was gone. I was just freefalling. It felt like forever, but it was just a second or two, and I didn't know what I was going to hit. And all I saw was darkness."

Friends 'thought it was some crazy magic trick'
His golfing buddies didn't see him vanish into the earth but noticed he wasn't visible, figuring he had tripped and fallen out of sight down a hill. But one of them heard Mihal's moans and went to investigate.

"He just thought it was some crazy magic trick or something," Mihal said.

Hardly.

Getting panicky and knowing his shoulder "was busted," Mihal assessed his dilemma in pitch darkness as he rested on a mound of mud, wondering if the ground would give way more and send him deeper into the pit.

"I was looking around, clinging to the mud pile, trying to see if there was a way out," he said. "At that point, I started yelling, "I need a ladder and a rope, and you guys need to get me out of here."'

Mark Mihal, 43, was golfing on the 14 hole of the Annbriar Golf Club near Waterloo, Ill., when he fell into a 18-foot sinkhole. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

A ladder that was hustled to the scene was too short, and Mihal's damaged shoulder crimped his ability to climb.

"At some point, I said, `I need to get out of here. Now,"' Mihal recalled.

One of his golf partners, a real-estate agent, made his way into the hole, converted his sweater into a splint for Mihal and tied a rope around his friend, who was pulled to safety.

"I felt fortunate I didn't break both legs, or worse," Mihal said.

While disturbing, such sinkholes aren't uncommon in southwestern Illinois, where old underground mines frequently cause the earth to settle. In Mihal's case, the sinkhole's culprit was subsurface limestone that dissolves from acidic rainwater, snowmelt and carbon dioxide, eventually causing the ground to collapse, said Sam Panno, a senior geochemist with the Illinois State Geological Survey.

That region "is riddled with sinkholes," with as many as 15,000 recorded, Panno said.

The one Mihal survived has him debating whether returning to Annbriar is a long shot.

"It's a great course. I love the course," Mihal said, having played Annbriar a couple dozen times over the past decade. "But I would have a tough time probably walking down that hole again."

The 20-year-old course proclaims on its website that "each year new golfers are tested by our challenging 18 holes of golf."

There's no mention of its newest - and most challenging - hole.
  See pictures and video; http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_new.....linois-sinkhole?lite

Mix-up: Wrong Woman Buried

Mortuary mix-up: Man discovers someone else's remains in wife's casket

INGLEWOOD, Calif., MARCH 11,2013 (KABC) ----- Evan Davidson, 73, knew something wasn't right when he saw his wife's body at the mortuary.

"I looked at her and said, 'Well this don't look like my wife at all,'" said Davidson. "They kept telling me it was, but it's just because she had been embalmed and she was sick."

Darlene Davidson, his wife of 51 years, died of heart failure. And on March 1, they thought she was buried.

"We had lots of people there, my friends and her friends," Davidson said.

But three days after the funeral, he got a call from an employee at Simpson Family Mortuary asking him to come and identify another body.

"He had a lady over there jumping up and down, saying the lady that she came to visit was not her mother," Davidson said.

And when he got there, Davidson couldn't believe his eyes.

"I saw my wife, and the shock just knocked me down," he said.

The spokesman for the mortuary admits there was mix-up and they buried the wrong woman in Darlene Davidson's gravesite.

"Our main concern is for these people to receive the dignity and respect they deserve, and put the individual to rest. We are not sweeping it under the rug. We made an error and we want to rectify our error and do whatever we can do to make them feel better," the spokesman said in a statement.

Davidson has hired an attorney to ask the state Cemetery and Funeral Bureau to investigate. In the meantime, he says he won't rest until his wife is laid to rest.

"Darlene was a beautiful lady. She was a good lady," he said.

Davidson and his family will be holding another funeral for his wife on Wednesday. Davidson said losing his wife has been very difficult, but the mortuary mix-up has made it even harder to deal with.
   See video; http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=9023899

"I thought, 'Oh my God, you've got to be kidding me'."

This was the first time she'd ever gotten a ticket — but on Friday, she said, the area was experiencing heavy winds and she had slowed down to be safe.

"Sometimes when it's dangerous, you have to do what you can to stay safe," she said.

StormTeam 4 Meteorologist Doug Kammerer said winds were gusting at around 40 mph that day.

"The reason [the ticket] is silly is because it's sending the wrong message," said John Townsend of AAA Mid-Atlantic. "And that is, 'We will tolerate you driving at more than the speed limit, but it you drive below the speed limit, then you're penalized for that'."

The driver has filed a complaint with Maryland State Police and plans to fight the ticket.

While police said they can't comment on this specific ticket, they said that driving too slowly can impede traffic, and that anyone who wants to fight a citation can do so in court.
  See video report; http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Laurel-Maryland-Ticket-Driving-Too-Slow-197285901.html

I have never went through this before, so I wasnt quite sure what to do. My father had passed away in sept. He had alot of medical bills that the va & his medicare didnt cover, along with a few other bills such as cable etc. I had went to my local courthouse and told them the situation of my father & that he didnt have much of anything the only property he had was a car. He had a will but wasnt completed. Didnt know if I needed to hire a lawyer, heard of something called probate or something like that, but they said since he didnt have anything really that there was no point in it. So I called around to all the different places that he was getting bills from & told them what happened. Most of them were very kind & helpful. They said that they would just do a write off or have me fill out a charity application and I was very greatful for that. But there were a few who said there was nothing they could do. So I guess my question is would us kids be responsable for any of his debt? And if we did not get it paid could that ruin our credit in the future or come back to bite us at all? I had heard that its his debt and as long as we didnt sign as part co owner/renter or anything like that then we have nothing to worry about. Any idea's or help would be great. Thank you much.

A A A (resize font)
(CNN) - At the intersection of the two country roads, charred debris lies strewn haphazardly. The earth around it is scorched.

It is here, in this corner of Dumas, Texas, that a sport utility vehicle and a gas tanker collided Sunday afternoon. The tanker's flammable cargo sent both vehicles up in flames, seriously injuring the truck driver and killing all five passengers in the Chevrolet SUV.

All of those who died were teenagers.

The crash, coupled with another one in Warren, Ohio, the same day, highlight that motor vehicle wrecks continue to be the No. 1 killer of youths in the United States.

Such accidents took the lives of about a quarter of the 15- to 24-year-olds who died in 2010, according to the most recent numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

They outpaced the other top culprits: firearm wounds, homicides, suicides and accidental poisonings.

But the wrecks mask a broader improvement: Overall traffic fatalities have been dropping in a "historic downward trend," according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2005, it tallied 43,510 traffic deaths; in 2011, there were 32,367, the lowest level since 1949.

In 2009, motor vehicle crashes were the 11th-leading cause of death. That marked the first time since 1981, when data were first available, that motor vehicle crashes were not among the nation's top 10 causes of death.

6 teens killed, 2 injured when overcrowded SUV flips into pond

A fatal mistake

Spike Parrent’s life was completely normal for the first four years.

Then one day in January 2011, he told his father, Tom, he was tired and wanted to take a nap. Tom Parrent watched as his son fell asleep, and he went upstairs to do some work. Minutes later, Parrent said he heard “an animal-like scream,” and when he rushed downstairs, his son was in the midst of a seizure.

“I ran to him; I was thinking, ‘Can I get to the ER before the paramedics?’” Parrent of Cary, N.C., told FoxNews.com. “On the way there, he was conscious, but not really aware of anything.”

The doctors at the emergency room ran some tests, but told Parrent it was likely a febrile seizure, which is caused by a fever and happens to five percent of children. Parrent was assured another seizure would never happen again.

Later that night, Spike had another seizure, so Parrent and his wife, JoJo, took him back to the ER, where doctors told them that of the five percent of kids who get febrile seizures, half end up having a second one. But, that would be it.

'You want to know why'

One week later, Spike was having multiple seizures a day and was diagnosed with epilepsy, a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.

“As a parent, that’s frustrating,” Parrent said. “It’s a lifelong illness, and you want to know why.”

Spike eventually ended up at Duke University Medical Center, where doctors told the Parrents that medication controls epileptic seizures in about 45 percent of patients – but after trying multiple medications, it was clear Spike would not be one of them.

“Somebody had to be within an arm’s reach of him 24/7,” Parrent said, because by this point, Spike was having more than 70 seizures a day.

Doctors tried every test possible – cancer and autoimmune diseases were ruled out. A brain biopsy was performed, and while doctors saw some unusual material in the brain’s lining, they were never able to determine what it was.

So, Spike tried alternative treatments – including the ketogenic diet, which is a low-carb, high-fat diet – so precise, every ingredient has to be measured to a tenth of a gram. At just 4 years old, a typical meal for Spike included heavy cream, heavy butter, a tiny piece of meat and a couple of blueberries.

For a while, the diet seemed to work and he went without seizures – until August of that same year when they returned with a vengeance.

Candidate for brain surgery

That’s when Spike was sent to the Cleveland Clinic, and based off research published in Monday’s Annals of Neurology, doctors there decided he was a good candidate for brain surgery. Essentially, Spike would have his right frontal lobe removed – the part of the brain responsible for attention span and executive function.

“We do this type of procedure on 50 to 60 patients a year,” Dr. Lara Jehi, lead author of the study and director of research at the Cleveland Clinic Epilepsy Center, told FoxNews.com.

While Jehi did not treat Spike, she conducted the research that made it possible for patients like Spike to lead longer, healthier lives. Her study looked at 158 patients over a 15 year period, and found that epileptic patients who opt to have frontal lobe surgery have an 80 percent chance of living seizure-free for the rest of their lives.

If you wait more than five years, Jehi said, you cut down that success rate by at least three times.

Spike had his last seizure on November 9, 2011 right before his surgery. To date, he has not had another one – and he’s reducing his medications and living a “happy, healthy life,” Parrent said.

When a patient like Spike doesn’t respond to medication, Jehi said, the chances of surgery working is between 50 to 70 percent.
That’s not to say there aren’t risks involved – but to her, the benefits outweigh the risks.

“This particular type of epilepsy is often considered the most challenging type to treat with surgery, so that is part of the reluctance,” she said. “What is interesting, and even more so for the patients you are holding back, is they benefit the most.”

Risks to the surgery include less than a 0.2 percent mortality rate and less than three percent risk of bleeding or stroke.

But – by not doing the surgery, patients have a one percent mortality per year, and that’s additive, Jehi said. Sudden death in epilepsy is a risk to patients with uncontrolled seizures, separate from injuries that can occur from a seizure – like breaking bones or burns. Epileptic patients also have an increased risk of depression and anxiety, she added, but patients who have the surgery can live an average of five to 7.5 years longer than those who don’t have it.

Spike’s parents worried about other side effects of the surgery – one of their concerns: Would this change his personality?

Doctors assured them it wouldn’t – in fact, the part of Spike’s brain casuing the seizures was considered dead, and not doing him any good. There was a chance he could have temporary paralysis and/or attention deficit issues, or he might be slower to learn things – but in the end, he would eventually recover all normal function.

“He’s learning to read and you can just see the acceleration of growth,” Parrent said. “It’s wonderful to watch.”

As for the future – doctors told the Parrents the sky is the limit for Spike, who is now 6. He can play football or kickbox. These days, he’s a regular little boy who enjoys hiking.

“He can do anything,” Parrent said.

FDA Warns Zithromax Can Cause Fatal Irregular Heart Rhythm

FDA warns Zithromax can cause fatal irregular heart rhythm

FDA, March 12,2013----The Food and Drug Administration warned on Tuesday that the antibiotic azithromycin, sold as Zithromax, can cause a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm in some patients.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine last May compared the risk of cardiovascular death from different antibacterial drugs and found that the drug, which is made by Pfizer Inc and is also sold by generic drugmakers, had a higher rate of death.

In its warning, the FDA said the drug can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal heart rhythm known as prolonged QT interval, in which the timing of the heart's contractions becomes irregular.

The FDA said doctors should use caution when giving the popular antibiotic to patients known to have this condition or who have certain risk factors. Those who may be at risk include people with low levels of potassium or magnesium, a slower than normal heart rate, or people who take certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias. The drug could also cause problems in people with torsades de pointes, a specific, rare heart rhythm abnormality.

However, the FDA noted that other drugs in the same class as azithromycin known as macrolides also have the potential for causing QT prolongation, as do non-macrolide antibiotics, such as fluoroquinolones, and doctors need to consider all of these risks when choosing an antibiotic.

Pfizer officials were not immediately available for comment.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/health/.....hythm/#ixzz2NLiOCCvB

Ford recalls 7,150 new cars to repair child locks

DETROIT, MARCH 12,2013-----Ford will recall 7,150 vehicles built in November, including the 2013 Escape crossover, because some models are equipped with a defective child lock on the left rear door.

Also included in the recall are the 2013 Focus and C-Max cars, the second-largest U.S. automaker said on Tuesday. The action marks Ford's fifth recall for the redesigned Escape since the vehicle's launch last year.

The company will inspect 5,638 Escapes that were built in Louisville Assembly Plant between Nov. 14 and Nov. 24, Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said in an email.

Ford is recalling 1,223 Focus cars as well as 283 C-Max vehicles. Both of the affected models were built at Michigan Assembly Plant between Nov. 17 and Nov. 21.

In some of these vehicles, the child lock on the left rear door may not work when the driver tries to activate the locks. The driver may incorrectly believe that the locks are functioning properly, Ford said.

About 5,650 of the vehicles covered by the recall are in the United States, Felker said, adding that Ford was not aware of any accidents and injuries due to the problem.

Ford has recalled its 2013 Escape crossover twice for problems with its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. The company issued two other recalls on the vehicle in early July for problems with the brakes and carpeting.
    http://www.nbcnews.com/business/ford-recalls-7-150-new-cars-repair-child-locks-1C8824834

The old one is hard to improve on. I don't like change, just for the sake of change. The new one looks uninteresting and incomplete . I would spend far less time there. If it ain't broke, don't fix it !!
