I was really nervous about the ceiling in a bedroom in the house we are renovating. Two walls were taken down and the ceiling had some old swirled texture, plaster, and some fresh drywall. Wasn't sure how I would make them all look the same. My head was telling me we should tear down the old plaster & drywall, and hang fresh drywall, but my heart wasn't in it. I know this would have been a BIG job and a BIG mess.

I started by using watered down drywall mud and a texture brush and tamped it on the ceiling and got this. This was actually over the old swirled texture.

I had planned on leaving like that but decided to play around with it. I took my wide drywall knife and lightly knocked it down and got this:

I really liked it, and was able to get the whole ceiling done in about an hour. Came back later and touched up a few spots.

What do you think?

I had an interior designer go over a part of my house plans that seemed odd and now I will have two walls that don't go all the way to the ceiling in a room with vaulted ceilings. Kind of like the picture, they are full height walls but there will be an even bigger space at the top because my ceilings are higher. Would you ignore the space at the top like in the picture or put something up there, a plant maybe? Should I have some kind of lights installed up there or an outlet to put something that lights up?

I was watching one of the early morning news shows and they featured a new product that gives your old countertop a new granite look for under $50. It is called the GIANI COUNTERTOP PAINT KIT. It is a process where you paint the countertop black then top it with 3 coats of special paint that you put on with sponges and then top with a supplied clear coat. The finished look seemed to be pretty nice and it seems like a cheap way to update a tired kitchen without breaking the bank.If you Google it you will find their website.

This may not be the perfect forum in which to start this thread, but I think it is the best choice.

I would like to open a thread for tips and ideas about environmentally conscious living. Not for debate, just for helpful hints and personal stories.

Thanks.

When to switch off your lights
By Lori Bongiorno

Does switching the lights on and off use more energy than leaving them on? The answer is no, despite the common misperception that turning a light on creates a power surge. The thinking is that it's more economical to just leave a light on rather than pay the costs of flicking it back on.

In reality, that "surge" lasts for only a fraction of second, according to Francis Rubinstein, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Any "start-up" energy costs are minuscule at best and are more than offset by the money you save from turning your lights off, even if it's only for a short time.

So if you're strictly concerned about saving energy (and money), you should turn your lights out when you're not using them.

The bigger issue with turning lights on and off frequently, though, has to do with shortening the product's lifetime, says Christina Kielich at the Department of Energy.

It doesn't affect the lamp life of an incandescent bulb very much, says Rubinstein. So it makes sense to always turn them off when you a leave room, even if it's only for a few minutes.

Compact florescent light bulbs, on the other hand, are a somewhat different story. Flicking them on and off repeatedly will affect how long they last, although, Rubinstein points out that the impact is minimal for most households.

How much flicking on and off is too much? The general consensus is that it's best to turn off CFLs when you are leaving for 15 minutes or longer. In fact, Energy Star recommends installing florescent bulbs in fixtures that are used for at least 15 minutes at time. So it doesn't make sense to use them in places where you'd need to switch them on and off constantly.

The rule of thumb is a little different when you're at the office, according to Rubinstein. Turn out florescent lighting when you're leaving for at least 5 minutes. The reason? Full-size florescent systems aren't as sensitive to frequent cycling as CFLs and won't impact the life of the bulb as much.

Hi Everybody,

When we were up at TL last weekend I took some before pics of the house. I am trying to decide what to do with the kitchen and would love some of your thoughts.

Currently it looks like this:

I like the border and other sailboat decorations, but I have to remind myself, that what I like isn't important (we are fixing this house up to sell in the spring).
Is it a mistake to leave them up?

I am thinking of warming the room up by painting the walls a sand color. We are also going to get new appliances - hopefully stainless steel.
Something along these lines:

Have not decided on the countertops. Either will 1) Paint them, 2)Replace them with another laminate) or 3)Replace them with tiles.

I also think this kitchen is screaming for an island. To get another cabinet & counter top with cost about $500.
I saw this at Kmart. Do you think it would be okay? I would probable paint it the wall color.

http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_1.....ge&sName=Kitchen

Any comments would be appreciated.

Barb

Okay, I have a question for you..... If we are going to replace our tub/shower (which will need to be replumbed due to it being an 18 inch deep tub - and you need a different drain because of the amount of water) - plus repaint and replace the floor. In which order do you do it? I say I should paint before they put the tub surround in, but hubby says no. My sister says put floor in before you put the tub in, I say no.... Is there a correct order to do this in, that keeps the mess to a minimum? Thanks....

We need to redo our roof. We got estimates but they came in a little too high than we can handle right now. So we are going to try and do it our selves. Can anyone give us some tips before we start? Other than leave a professional do it. We would if we could but we can't so we won't. We have always had problems with this roof. There isn't enough slope to it . Then it has a flat part and then it lays in the end of the valley. We had this reroofed about 10 years ago and only had about one year of not having it leak. So we are going with the metal. We want to put it over the old roof. My husband wants to drop the rafters to make more of a picth and have sorta one roof over the other. The thing I can't figure is the valley . How to put in a valley doing that way. He says there won't be one. Any thoughts would be apprectiated.
