Clearfield – PennDOT issues the following update for I-80 work in Clearfield County.  Motorists can expect the following activity the week of Sept. 6. All work is weather and schedule dependent. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $53 million project.

WESTBOUND:
•     Starting September 7, the travel (right) lane will be closed from mile-marker 115.5 to mile-marker 112.
•     Operations performed will be day and night-time paving.

EASTBOUND:
      
•     Starting September 7, the passing (left) lane will be closed from mile-marker 105.5 to mile-marker 113.

•     Operations performed will be earthwork and guide rail upgrades.

OVERALL PROJECT


•     Up-to-date travel information should be available to drivers on the Highway Advisory Radio System (HARS) at 1640 on the AM radio dial.

•     Work is expected to run through October of this year.

It usually makes us feel helpless to do anything. But this Thursday and Friday, is different.

DuBois Regional Medical Center is dedicating its September blood drives to the honor and memory of past and present patients of Hahne Regional Cancer Center, a service of DRMC.

Cancer patients use the different blood products as part of their care, so to donate blood is quite a fitting gift. And at the blood drives, everyone is invited to sign a large card that will be displayed at the Hahne open house from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10.  The first name of a loved one may be included if you have someone specific to remember.

The process is simple, and the first step is the easiest - call for an appointment at 375-INFO:

At DRMC East off Maple Avenue, DuBois, the drive is Thursday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and at DRMC West, along Hospital Avenue,  the drive is Friday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Each year it gets better”, said Ben Hummel of Clearfield.  Sporting a black tuxedo with bright pink cummerbund, Ben portrayed his favorite Hollywood star, James Bond.  Mr. Hummel and 286 area older adults enjoyed a day to remember and celebrated a tribute to Hollywood films of the past at the annual Summer Celebration held on August 26 at Lawrence Hall, Clearfield.

Co-sponsored by the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc, its Centers for Active Living, and Colonial Courtyard of Clearfield, the Summer Celebration “Hello to Hollywood” offered games, dancing, door prizes, and a lunch that included “Casablanca” chicken, “High Noon” roast beef, “Million Dollar Baby” green beans, “Red Hot” parsley potatoes, and American Beauty” cake .  The meal was catered by Catering and Cakes by Cindy and Express Cafe.  Music was provided by The Vagabonds, a local five-piece band, who with their lively variety of polkas and popular music, kept the dance floor filled.

The staff of Colonial Courtyard hosted games with prizes and gifts during the celebration.  Having fun and enjoying the company of celebrities like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Elton John, Tammy Wynett, Elvis, John Wayne, Rambo, Harpo, Flo, May West, and Lucy, to name a few, brought smiles and laughter to everyone.
  
The day ended with a large number of door prizes being given away and a 50/50 drawing of $307 which was won by Andy Dobash.  The staff of the CCAAA and Colonial Courtyard are already preparing for next year’s celebration.  It takes a lot of organization including selecting the theme, but staff agrees that it is definitely worth the effort.  Everyone enjoyed the event.

     The Health & Human Service Council of Clearfield County is a non-profit organization that is voluntary, representative, and countywide for individuals and agencies that are interested in providing for and improving the human services in Clearfield County.  The purpose of the organization is to foster, promote, and facilitate cooperation among human service agencies.

A representative from Community Resources for Independence (CRI) will present the organizational update.  Guests and members will also have an opportunity to network and share information on new programs and activities within their agencies.

Plans Underway for 15th Annual Charity Auction


       The 2010 Auction Committee is collecting donations and sponsorships for the upcoming 15th Annual Anne S. Thacik Charity Auction. This year’s auction will be held on Wednesday evening, October 13th, at the Knights of Columbus in Clearfield, PA.  Sponsored in part by Home Instead Senior Care, this is a wonderful event you will not want to miss.

       The evening begins at 6 PM with a silent auction and various games of chance.  A 50/50 cash raffle will be conducted.  Last year’s winner took home over $1,000!  Raffle tickets are available now and through auction night at a cost of one ticket for $5, or 3 tickets for $10.

       The live auction begins at 7:30, with Bob E. Day as emcee, and local favorite, Pat Errigo, as auctioneer.  Wine and a variety of desserts will be available throughout the evening for your enjoyment.  More than 100 items are on the docket to be auctioned, including get-away trips, fine restaurant packages, autographed items, event tickets, theme baskets, handwork, and much more.  

        Admission tickets are $10 each, but special pricing is available for groups at 15 tickets for $100.  Funds raised will help support programs and services of the Area Agency on Aging.  Rikki Ross, Marketing & Events Coordinator for the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., described last year’s event as very successful and well attended.  “Our hopes remain high that previous donors and sponsors will be as generous this year, and that we can count on as lively an audience as we have enjoyed in the past.”

Vouchers for the Pennsylvania Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program continue to be made available to qualifying senior citizens in Clearfield County.  The SFMNP provides eligible, older citizens of Pennsylvania with vouchers to purchase fruits and vegetables at registered farmers markets.  

The schedule for voucher distribution in the Clearfield area is set to change.  Beginning Monday, July 26, distribution will begin at the Clearfield Center for Active Living at 103 North Front Street, Clearfield, PA and will no longer be given out at the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center.  The vouchers will be distributed at the Clearfield Center on Mondays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. until September 30 or until all vouchers have been distributed.

  
The schedule for the other Centers remains unchanged:  Coalport Center for Active Living - 672-3574, Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.; DuBois Senior & Community Center -371-4000, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.; Houtzdale Family Service Center -
378-5120, Mondays and Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Karthaus Center for Active Living - 263-7277, Mondays, noon - 1:00 p.m.; Kylertown Center for Active Living -345-6338, Fridays, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.; and Mahaffey Center for Active Living - 277-4544, Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.  

The produce must be fresh (not processed) and grown or grow-able in Pennsylvania.  Four $5 vouchers will be distributed to individuals 60 years of age and older applying in Clearfield County who meet income eligibility and residency requirements.  The income limit this year is $20,036 for a single person and $26,955 for a married couple.  However, these guidelines are subject to change.  The federal guidelines that are in place the day of the distribution will be those that are used.  
     

Identification showing date of birth and county (or town) residency is required when vouchers are picked up.  A Social Security Card is not a valid form of identification for this purpose.  Examples of acceptable identification include the following:  a PA Drivers license, a state photo ID, an ATA Identification card, or a letter from the Social Security Administration stating age or date of birth.
Eligible individuals who cannot pick up their vouchers may name a Proxy to pick these up for them by signing an authorized Proxy form.  Proxy forms are available at all county Centers for Active Living and also on the agency's website (www.ccaaa.net).  The form must be signed by the eligible individual prior to picking up the vouchers, and identification for both persons must be submitted by the proxy when applying for vouchers.  
     

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers are being made available in Clearfield County by the PA Department of Agriculture, through the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging.  Distribution of the vouchers is assisted by volunteers of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Volunteer Center of Clearfield County.  
     

Those individuals who are interested in having lunch at a Center are asked to call prior to 9 a.m. to make their reservation.  Any individual over the age of 60 may reserve a lunch and contribute to the cost of the meal on a donation basis.  The cost of a meal for a person under age 60 is $3.00.

Farmer Market Nutrition Program to Begin

Once again the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., in cooperation with the PA Department of Agriculture will be distributing Farmer Market Nutrition Program food vouchers.  This program provides eligible, older citizens of Pennsylvania with vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables that are grown or can be grown in Pennsylvania.  In Clearfield County the distribution of FMNP vouchers will begin June 30 and run through September 30 or until all vouchers are distributed.

Four $5 vouchers will be distributed to individuals 60 years of age and older in Clearfield County who apply and meet income eligibility and residency requirements.  The income limit this year is $20,036 for a single person and $26,955 for a married couple, however, these guidelines are subject to change.  The federal guidelines that are in place the day of the distribution will be those that are used.  Identification showing date of birth and county (or town) residency is required when vouchers are picked up.  A Social Security Card is not a valid form of identification for this purpose.
