Hey everyone my name is Cameron and I'll be moving to dubois in about a month. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good gyms in or around DuBois? Also if there are any places that offer boxing classes or any kind of martial arts. Its going to be sad leaving my gym but hopefully I can find one just as nice. Any information would be awesome.

This is similar to purghfans problem back in May, but with an older dog.

Our shih tsu - bichon frise female is almost 3 years old. We had her fixed when we first got her. She wasn't very well house-broken, but we worked with her until there were just a few accidents.

This past year we have been going crazy with her peeing and pooping in the house. She has peed on the furniture, the carpets, the bare floors, she even pees in her crate. We've had to remove all our downstairs carpet, toss out throw rugs, two dog beds, blankets, pillows. We leave the back door open so she can go out whenever she needs to go and she will stop in the sun room on the way out and poop on the floor. She will also pee on the floor and then go out and sit on the porch.

She has a fenced in yard that we keep mowed and cleaned. We take up her water and food after 8PM and still find puddles and piles in the morning. I don't sleep well, and she can go out til 3 or 4 in the morning without needing to wake anyone. We asked the vet about it during her last check-up and he just shrugged and grinned.

I am at the end of my rope. I can't give her to someone else knowing how she is, and as she is otherwise a good dog, I hate to take that final step. But I really can't live with this anymore.

Anyone have any advice?

I work and take call at the hospital so my current route is approximately 2.5 miles around DRMC. It usually takes me between 45-50 minutes to complete. I'd like to work up to 5 miles 4-5x week in less than 80 minutes. Because of the call I take, my schedule can be variable, but I am available most afternoons and evenings. I'm 31 and have a small dog who sometimes walks with me. If you're interested in teaming up,please contact me. Most Sincerely,
Becky

Our new Gracey still has her shelter cold. Before anyone jumps me for assuming we do not have the vet involved, we do. Both her vet who originally treated at the shelter and my own. We were told by both that they cannot cure colds, just the infection and that they just have to run their course like humans.

She went through her course of antibiotics and that cleared up the green mucus and her chest congestion. Her drainage is clear and continues to be. She is getting better day by day, but progress is slow (its been almost 2 weeks since we brought her home) and we were told that is most likely due to her young age and being FIV+.

My daughter has been vigilant about telling me everytime she needs her nose wiped And we try to tickle her nose to get her to sneeze lol. I tried sitting in the bathroom with her with the shower steam going, but it scares her and we cannot stress her out.

Does anyone have any suggestions for helping to get her over this cold faster? She is eating and drinking normal. She is mostly active, but then other times where you can tell she doesn't feel well.

Meet my new lil lady, Gracey (they gave her another name, but Gracey seems to fit her personality and events surrounding her life so much better) We went up to the ASPCA adoption event today and brought home the sweetest kitty I ever met. She has not left my lap since I brought her home. She's sitting here right now as I type this purring away

She has a cold but we were given all her medication for that and an eye cream to help clear her eyes up. She was spayed and unfortunately is FIV positive, but I don't see that slowing this angel down. They even gave her all her vaccinations.

Everyone was so nice and pleasant up there. I couldnt believe the turnout! We got there around 10:30 and after just a short wait to get in (yes, there was a line! ) there were already atleast 40 cats adopted! A volunteer there said that even before this event that 200 had already found homes. How wonderful! It was hard not to get choked up though at all of them. Some were in worse shape than others, but they were all getting the care they needed. And we did not run across one unsociable kitty! God bless them all.

I fell in love with Gracey, but was concerned with all of her health concerns. The vet told us everything we needed to do and even gave us a number to call to take her back to her for more care if anything goes wrong.

Upon leaving, one of the radio stations was there. After getting our picture taken and being filmed, he gave us free tickets to Lakemont for the entire family. I thought that was so nice.

I just wanted to share our morning and let everyone know how wonderful of a time we had. Yes, it is bittersweet, but to see so many babies getting homes was so heart warming.

Thank you to all who gave of their time for these kitties!

I looked closer and I saw some sort of drainage around it. I wiped it off and saw a small hole there. Has anyone's dog had this before? It's kinda creeping me out and I feel so bad for my poor dog because I know it has to hurt. I did some research and found it could be a draining anal gland or (yuck) some type of larva that got in there. Is there anything I can do to help him?

What to do if your dog eats chocolate...

Friends dog stole a fudge brownie today. Not a piece of one, but a whole one. (Fudge kind, dark chocolate involved, Dark chocolate being one of the most deadly chocolates for a dog) Thankfully she remembered right away (or her daughter did) to give her dog 1 tsp of Hydrogen Peroxide and the dog puked up the whole thing in one clump.

She called the vet who told her she did the right thing and the dog should be fine. Haven't heard anything more from her, so assuming the dog is indeed fine.

She really did do the right thing. If your dog eats chocolate, if you notice it within the first hour, give your dog 1 tsp (teaspoon) of hydrogen peroxide. You may have to do this with a dropper, holding the dogs snout up and putting it back in the dogs throat. Make sure when you do this you have the dog in a place that you can easily clean up because the dog should start puking almost immediately. If the dog does not puke within 3 minutes, give 1 more tsp (teaspoon) full.

It will be messy but its worth the mess to save your dogs life. Other than making the dog puke up the chocolate, there really is nothing else to do but wait it out. If the dog seems lethargic, pukes insistently for more than 20 minutes, goes into seizures, etc get the dog to the vet immediately because that will mean you caught it too late and some of the chocolate has already digested into the system. If you catch the dog within an hour of consuming the chocolate, the Hydrogen Peroxide should work and the dog should have no other problems.

Thought this little tidbit of info might help some other pet owners.

Makaila

We have two boxers. We are also trying to sell our house. As much as we try, and can't always smell it, we are told that a lot of those that are looking at our house are smelling our dogs. Yesterday in particular, we had someone who loved the house until they opened the door to our basement and the smell was overwhelming. I can't say that I necessarily agree with that because if it were that bad we would have smelled it. We can't always smell it because we live here but I have smelled it from time to time and yesterday wasn't one of those times. Regardless, we need some kind of help in finding something that will help to eliminate pet odors. I have been told there is some type of enzyme out there that neutralizes the odor. Does anyone know what I am looking for and where I can find it? The basement does not have any fabric surfaces in it, all tile, but we keep the dogs' crates down there. I would appreciate any help anyone might be able to provide here.

Use Alka-Seltzer to Relieve Summertime Bug Bites.

Use Alka-Seltzer to Relieve Summertime Bug Bites

Despite all those tips on avoiding stings and bites, Mother Nature and the wrath of summer still got to you. Give yourself some relief from that irritating bite with Alka-Seltzer laying around the house.

Household site DIY LIfe suggests dropping two Alka-Seltzer tablets into warm water. Soak a cotton ball in it, and then apply it your bite for 30 minutes. (You should not use this trick if you are allergic to aspirin.) Alka-Seltzer contains sodium bicarbonate, an active ingredient in baking soda, which helps relieve the itch.

If that doesn't relieve your itch, try applying nail polish or just applying some good ol' Bengay on the bite.

Unusual Uses For Alka-Seltzer

These fizzy little pills will help you unclog the sink, polish jewelry and more.

Alka-Seltzer tablets and their generic equivalents are useful for more than just relief from indigestion and heartburn. From cleaning your toilet to attracting fish, these little pills pack big power when used in other ways.

Clean Your Toilet
Drop two tablets in the toilet, wait 20 minutes for the citric acid to loosen the grime, scrub and flush. Your toilet will look as clean as it would had you used conventional cleaners.

Unclog the Sink
A great natural solution for unclogging the drain! Drop 3 tablets down the drain, followed by a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Let the hot water run for 5 minutes and you'll have a clear drain. This will also work to deodorize the drain.

Clean Burnt Food Off Glass Cookware
Burnt the casserole again? Even with a good scrub, sometimes the food seems to stay. Enter Alka-Seltzer. Drop 5 tablets in a sink full of hot water, soak your cookware for an hour and the burnt food will come off with ease.

Clean a Glass Jar, Vase or Thermos
For difficult to clean vessels with intricate design and hard to reach places, a wash cloth or scrub brush just won't do. Instead, drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets in, add hot water and swish it around until the tablets are dissolved and let it sit for an hour. Rinse, and the glass jar, vase or Thermos will be as clean as new.

Polish Jewelry
Drop two tablets in a bowl of warm water. Let your jewelry soak for about 20 minutes. It will look new again! (Note: This is not safe for pearls or opals.)

Clean a Coffee Percolator
Fill the water chamber and drop in two tablets, then run a cycle. This will clean out all the internal components. Run through another plain water cycle before using the machine again for coffee.

Go Fishing
Fish love bubbles, and dissolving Alka-Seltzer is very bubbly. Put a tablet inside your tube jig and cast off. The fish won't be able to resist the stream of bubbles.

Soothe Insect Bites
Drop two tablets in warm water, then soak a cotton ball in the solution. Apply it to the infected area for 30 minutes for relief from the insect bites.

Aside from these great Home Ec. solutions, Alka-Seltzer tablets have been attributed medicinal benefits beyond those listed on the box. Here are two of the rumored benefits:

Manage Nicotine Addiction
Take two Alka-Seltzer tablets three times daily to relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms and curb cravings.

Cure Urinary Tract Infections
Take two tablets in a glass of water as soon as you notice symptoms. Results are almost immediate. Keep in mind that Aspirin is a main ingredient in Alka-Seltzer so those with Aspirin allergies shouldn't use it.

I am so irritated and need to vent. I have so many emails from people wanting me to stud my dog out to breed with every mix you can think of. I finally attached this to my ad...

"For those of you who have emailed reguarding stud service...I will not be studding my male out at this time and will definitely not stud him out to an ACA registered dog because the ACA will register anything. I also do not believe in mix breeding (mutts) so please don't email me and ask. If you are interested in breeding mutts then I suggest that you visit the Humane Society and rescue a dog who needs a loving home. Thank you!"

I can't understand why people want to do this when there are tons of dogs that are homeless. I'm guessing because it's easy money. It sure makes me feel sick. I didn't want to sound mean on my ad but wanted people to understand how I feel about it.

When buying a purebred dog please do your homework. Some registeries are better than others. AKC is by far the best because the ONLY way to be AKC is to be born into it. I also use the CKC (continental) and had to go through very strict paperwork to get my male double registered.

I can say that I am a proud owner of a mutt but I did not pay 100's of dollars for him either. I have also rescued 2 cats.

Plunked it here so I can find it again:

Hyssop Purple Haze , Agastache 'Purple Haze', brings a new color palette with its long racemes of smoky blue violet flowers that rise above aromatic foliage. The striking color is the darkest we have seen for an Agastache. 'Purple Haze' blooms prolifically from July until a hard frost! It remains compact in a container with an early pinch. 'Purple Haze' is very tolerant of heat and dry conditions and prefers well-drained soil. The name originates from the Greek word aga, meaning "very much," and stachys, meaning "spikes," referring to the many flower spikes. One of the easiest and most rewarding perennials to grow, this award winning 'Purple Haze' is a tremendously long bloomer. It is useful for adding a spot of color to the garden late in the season when many other plants are finished. Its foliage smells distinctly like black licorice when crushed, thus its common name, Anise Hyssop. If you'd like to restrict the height of this tall perennial, pinch back its blue-green foliage in spring before the flower buds are formed.

Plant Facts:Mature Height 2 to 3 feet
Mature Spread 1 to 2 feet
Soil Type Well drained
Moisture Moderate
Mature Form Upright
Growth Rate Moderate
Sun Exposure Full sun
Flower Color Blue violet
Foliage Color Green
Zones 6-9

Thank you to Bon who provided the ID and info for our find at the BUDS plant sale. Some people were looking at the Dill and found him.

Black swallowtail

Common Name: Black swallowtail
Scientific Name: Papilio polyxenes asterius Stoll
Order: Lepidoptera
Description: The black swallowtail is a black butterfly with yellow markings near the margins of the forewings and hindwings and more limited blue and red markings on the hindwings. Its wing span can reach 4 ½ inches. Full grown parselyworms or caterpillars can reach 2 inches in length and are smooth and green, marked with black bands and yellow spots.

The black swallowtail mimics the bad tasting pipevine swallowtail, Battus philenor (Linnaeus), which is all metallic black-blue on the upper surface of the wings, lacking the yellow and blue markings. Caterpillars feed on pipevines, Dutchman’s-pipe and Virginia snakeroot.

Life Cycle: Winter is spent in the chrysalis (pupa) stage. Adults emerge in the spring and seek host plants. Females lay round, yellow to cream colored eggs on the leaves. Caterpillars hatching from eggs are initially black with a white saddle. After molting several times, each larvae transforms into a pale green chrysalis that is suspended from a plant stem by a thread.

Habitat and Food Source(s): Caterpillars have chewing mouthparts. Adults have siphoning mouths. Host plants of the caterpillar include members of the parsley family (Umbelliferae) including carrot, parsley, dill, fennel and Queen Anne's lace and some members of the Rutaceae (Ruta graveolens and Thamnosma texana). This caterpillar is bad tasting to birds and other predators because of toxins absorbed from the host plants. Like other larvae of swallowtail butterflies, parselyworms have a defensive structure, called an osmeterium, right behind the head. This structure is usually concealed. However, when disturbed this "Y" or "V" shaped organ is inverted. It emits a strong odor that is apparently distasteful to predators. This butterfly is easy to attract and raise by planting dill or fennel in your vegetable garden.

Pest Status: Caterpillars feed on dill, fennel and some other plants; medically harmless.

For additional information, contact your local Texas AgriLife Extension agent or search for other state Extension offices.

Literature: Howe 1975. Wright 1993.

Gant Daily, Tuesday, June 1
DuBois Area Historical Society Wraps Up Spring Speaker Series on June 3
June 1, 2010 at 5:03 AM by Gant Team · Leave a Comment

DUBOIS – The DuBois Area Historical Society will conclude its spring speaker series on June 3 at 7:30 p.m. with the annual program by Galen Kilmer, “DuBois Area High School Local History Projects.” The program in the E.D. Reitz Museum, 30 W. Long Ave., DuBois, is free and open to the public. This program was moved from its originally scheduled date in May.

Kilmer is DuBois Area High School’s local history teacher. This will be his eighth year presenting this program, following in the tradition of Todd Thompson, retired local history teacher at DuBois High School, who did a similar program for many years.

The program is always unique and surprising. The high school students bring a new perspective to history and how it is examined. Kilmer will present the best of the projects completed by the students in his class, explain the course requirements, and discuss how the students conduct their research. Also upcoming on June 5, the E. D. Reitz Museum will be open during the Festival of the Arts from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The DuBois Area Historical Society has planned a busy fall, leading off with its fourth annual open house on Saturday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This event, which is free and open to the public, has attracted large numbers of visitors to the Society’s museum over the past three years. October 16 will be the Third Annual Spirit of DuBois Lantern walk, taking place this year on the Penn State DuBois Campus as part of the Campus’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. The walks will begin at 6:30 p.m. and leave every 20 minutes from the Hiller Building. This is a completely new program taking those attending through one of the most historic areas in the community, the original DuBois property. Admission for the tour is $5 for adults and $3 for students, with children sixth grade and younger free if accompanied by an adult.

The 2010 activities will conclude with the Fourth Annual DuBois Area Historical Society Luncheon, Saturday, Nov. 13 at noon at the DuBois Diner. The guest speaker will be Barb Clark, “Hidden Messages of Quilts.” Luncheon costs and menu will be announced later in the year.

I just returned home from a visit to Rumbarger Cemetery. Being Memorial Day, I wanted to visit the GAR Circle, and just take a walk around the grounds. To say the least, I am almost speechless at how at cemetery well within the city limits, could be left to deteriorate as much as it has! Particularly troubling are the number of veteran graves, from the Civil War through WWII (I didn't see any Viet Nam veterans, but that doesn't mean there may not be any) that need attention.

Additionally, many of the names on the stones reflect well known personages from the beginning of DuBois, as well as names formerly unknown to me.

I certainly respect and applaud the efforts a few volunteers have made to beautify the cemetery, but it will certainly take more than those volunteers. I know we've discussed this topic previously, but on Memorial Day, it seems fitting to see what can be done to actually start something. What say any of you? How can we get this started?

Since Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, I thought I would post a book suggestion for summer reading. This is a book I finished last night and I would rate it in the top five of all books I've read in my 57 years.

The book is "Suttree", by Cormac McCarthy. It is written in a style reminiscent of Faulkner, and in it's darkness, both a very funny and a very sad book. The setting is in Nashville in the early 50's. The story is about an indigent drifter, basically living in the streets, flop houses an depending upon season, on a houseboat. The story has dozen of smaller stories centered around friends, family, loves and loves lost in his 3 or 4 years in Nashville. This style of writing is not for everyone, but for those it is, you will find a book that when you end it, you'll be thinking of re-reading it again.
