Start some Pansies!

If you're just looking for some fun and not too concerned about the quality of your crop, then try the following.  Get a really cheap pack of Pansy seeds and toss them into the fridge for a day or about the last of February or the beginning of March.

Use an aluminum pan or a Chinese Take Out container, and poke lots of holes in the bottom.  Get a bag of seed starting soil or you can risk using some old soil (not the best idea).  Add about an inch and a half of damp soil to the pan.  Sprinkle the seeds on top, press in with your hand and add a shallow layer of sand on top.  Stick the pan under a black garbage bag at regular room temperature but not too warm.  When you see quite a few sprouts, set the container on a very bright window sill in the coldest room you have.  They like 45-50 degrees.  Keep turning the pan every day and moisten the soil but don't soak it.  In about 3 weeks you can fertilize very weakly.  In 4-5 weeks you will have some pansies to set out in your pots and flower beds.

For better results get the Jiffy seed starter and buy a plastic potting kit that has a dome on top.

For best results, call a Master Gardener for more exact instructions on seed starting.  849-7361
