Numerous local fire crews are currently on-scene (as of 11:56 p.m.) after a structure fire has caused severe damage to the Little League concession stand at the Groundhog Little League complex in Punxsutawney. The call came in shortly after 11 p.m. that the concession stand was on fire, and when the first crews arrived on-scene, they reported that it was a working fire. Heavy smoke was still showing from the structure 30 minutes after crews arrived. Pictured above are photos from the scene (by Larry McGuire) and photos taken from across the creek near the Punxy Plaza (by Zak Lantz).                                                                                                                   https://www.punxsutawneyspirit.com/content/breaking-news-crews-scene-little-league-concession-stand-fire

Fire marshal says a deep fryer caused fire at Punxsutawney Little League complex

Investigators are looking into a fire that broke out at the Punxsutawney Little League complex Wednesday night. (Jefferson County Fire Wire)

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. - A state police fire marshal said a deep fryer that was left-on spurred a fire at a concession stand at the Punxsutawney Little League complex Wednesday night.

Punxsutawney Fire Chief Bryan Smith said the fire broke out at the Little League concession stand around 11:15 p.m.

He said a game was played there Wednesday night and people left the field around 9 p.m.

Smith said the concession stand has at least $80,000 worth of coolers and equipment inside and he is hopeful some of the equipment can be salvaged.

He said most of the fire was in the ceiling area and no playing fields were affected. The Punxsutawney Chucks softball team was practicing at the fields Thursday to prepare for the 4A PIAA state championship.

Punxsutawney Groundhog Little League President Brian Hallman said the organization makes thousands of dollars off the concession stand during the summer.

"We get quite a few teams coming in from all over the place to play down here and our concession stand is one of our biggest parts of that," Hallman said. "We make a good profit from the concession stand so without it, it's going to be a pretty rough year."

Hallman said the concession stand also housed the only restrooms at the complex.

"We spoke with a local fire department here in town and they are going to give us a portable concession trailer for us to use until we can get this cleaned up and get it built back up to where it needs to be," Hallman said.

A fire marshal has deemed the fire to be accidental. No injuries were reported.

Hallman said the building does not have insurance.
