Troopers: Man scammed out of $54K by someone claiming to be with Social Security office

State police in Bedford say a Clearville man is out of $54,000 because of a scam.

Troopers say the person claimed to be from the Social Security office and U.S. Treasury Department and told the victim to buy gift cards with credit cards and send the person codes.

They say the person also told the victim to send around $29,000 in cash to a location in California.

The Department of Homeland Security intercepted the package and is now investigating.

According to the Social Security Administration website, the agency will not:

  • Tell you that your Social Security number has been suspended.
  • Contact you to demand an immediate payment.
  • Ask you for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  • Require a specific means of debt repayment, like a prepaid debit card, a retail gift card, or cash.
  • Demand that you pay a Social Security debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe.
  • Promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information or money.
