The Busy day: Dupree tagged, Foster retires, three others released

The Steelers on Monday morning announced they have placed the franchise tag on linebacker Bud Dupree and also announced the retirement of Ramon Foster.

The cost of the tag for linebackers is $15.83 million, which the Steelers hope to flatten by negotiating a long-term deal with Dupree. But as they found out in the cases of Max Starks and Le'Veon Bell in the past, finding middle ground with a player who'll make so much money in one year, and has the chance to enter free agency again next March, isn't an easy task.

Foster, a mainstay with the team for 11 years and a starting guard since his days as a spot starter as an undrafted rookie in 2009, provided a statement to the team:

"When the time comes, you just know, and now is the time for me to take a bow," wrote Foster. "I've made some friends for a lifetime, had some moments that I'll never forget, and seen some things I never thought I would because of this game."

Foster thanked Mike Tomlin, Art Rooney II, the late Dan Rooney, Kevin Colbert, the remainder of the organization and Steelers fans.

"There's no other organization I would have rather played for in my career," Foster concluded.

"Ramon was class in every way," wrote Tomlin. "I think his career is indicative of what this professional football journey should be about."

The moves should allow the Steelers to get under the 2020 salary cap number - which will count only the salaries of their top 51 players - by Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Steelers cut Dupree's backup, Anthony Chickillo, to save $5 million in cap space. They're left with youngsters Ola Adeniyi and Tuzar Skipper behind Dupree and his bookend at OLB, T.J. Watt.

The Steelers also announced the releases of starting inside linebacker Mark Barron and special-teamer Johnny Holton.

The release of Barron saves the Steelers (before replacement cost) $5.25 million in salary, while Holton carried a 2020 salary of $825,000. Both players were entering the final years of their contracts.

The Steelers as presently constructed will need to rely more on Vince WilliamsUlysees Gilbert and Robert Spillane at ILB next to Devin Bush

Holton was the team's No. 6 WR and punt gunner/kickoff return specialist.

Ravens ship Chris Wormley to Steelers in rare trade between AFC North rivals

In a rare trade between AFC North rivals, the Baltimore Ravens sent defensive end Chris Wormley and a 2021 seventh-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a 2021 fifth-round pick, sources confirmed Friday.

The only other player trade between these teams occurred in 1997, when the Ravens acquired offensive lineman Bernard Dafney from the Steelers.

Wormley, 26, started seven games in 2019 for the NFL's No. 4 defense. A third-round pick in 2017, he ranked 11th last season with 33 tackles and recorded 1.5 sacks.

Ebron nice pick up.

Terrible hands and has yet to complete a season without being injured.  Reminds me of another Xavier Grimble.  Probably signed to be more of a lineman. It's time McDonald lives up to expectations and Gentry improves.

McDonald drops in key situations. Im willingly to give Ebron 8-10 games. They should have laid out some extra cash when they had Jesse James.

James was ok.  Terrible blocker.  Had a very lousy year in DET last year...only 13 catches and still has 3 years left on his contract.  Ugh.
