NASHVILLE, Tn. (EYT) – A Clarion University graduate was fatally shot in Nashville on Thursday night while driving to work as a nurse in the ICU Unit at a Nashville, Tennessee hospital.

According to a published article on Tennessean, 26-year-old Caitlyn Kaufman was shot and killed while driving on I-440 West on her way to work at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Caitlyn was a nurse in the intensive care unit where she treated COVID-19 patients.

A Metro Nashville police officer discovered Caitlyn in her SUV when he stopped around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, to investigate why her vehicle was parked on the right shoulder of I-440W, believing it was a single-vehicle crash, according to police.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the incident occurred between 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The shooting is under investigation.

A 26-year-old nurse from Butler County who was living in Nashville was shot and killed inside an SUV Thursday night.

Her family said she was on her way to work treating COVID patients. Family members said it was her dream to go to Nashville to be a nurse.

A police officer discovered Caitlyn Kaufman’s gray Mazda CX5 along an interstate Thursday night.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives believe she was on her way to work.

She is from Chicora, Butler County, and went to Clarion University where she was a member of the women’s swimming and diving program.

Family members said they do not know if this was an accident or if she was targeted. Investigation Continues into Death of Clarion U. Grad

NASHVILLE, Tn. (EYT) – The investigation into the death of a Clarion University graduate who was fatally shot while driving to work in Nashville late last week is continuing.

According to the Tennessean, police say 26-year-old Caitlyn Kaufman, a Clarion University graduate and Butler County native who was found dead in her vehicle on December 3 on the shoulder of I-440W in Nashville, most likely died within moments of being shot in her left shoulder.

Metro Nashville Police homicide detective Chris Dickerson reported that police discovered someone fired at least six shots into Kaufman’s car between 6:05 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. as she drove to work on I-440, heading for her job at the Intensive Care Unit at Saint Thomas West Hospital.

Kaufman was discovered, deceased in her SUV, by a Metro Nashville officer who stopped around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, to investigate why her vehicle was parked on the shoulder of the highway, believing it was a single-vehicle crash, according to police.

Dickerson said a motive in the killing is still unknown, and a suspect has yet to be identified. Dickerson also reported detectives are not aware of any roadway video of the shooting.

A Davidson County Medical Examiner determined Kaufman was killed by a single gunshot that entered her left shoulder and likely died within 15 seconds, with no time to even call 9-1-1.

Kaufman’s family is continuing to ask the community’s help in finding answers.

“Please help me find out who did this to my daughter,” Diane Kaufman recently pleaded. “I need closure. Caitlyn was selfless. … She had a contagious laugh. She had beautiful blue eyes. A heart of gold.”

Diane Kaufman went on to report she had no reason to believe anyone had reason to target her daughter expressing that Caitlyn didn’t have any enemies and must have been at “the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Other members of Caitlyn’s family, including two cousins, recently spoke to WTAE News, also asking for anyone with information about her death to come forward.

“Whoever did this really took a piece of everyone’s heart,” said Kristin Hertweck, Kaufman’s cousin. “We just keep asking why her? Why did it have to be her?”

According to her family, Kaufman dedicated her life to helping others and was living her dream of becoming a nurse. She had been working on the front lines of the pandemic, treating COVID-19 patients in the ICU.

“That’s what we can’t understand, how there’s somebody out there that could do this to her,” said Hertweck.

According to CNN News, Metro Nashville Police announced on Monday that a local Nashville man, who wished to remain anonymous, donated $10,000.00 as a reward for any information leading to an arrest in the case.

NASHVILLE, Tn. (EYT) – A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Clarion University graduate who was fatally shot while driving to work in Nashville on December 3.

Metro Nashville Police Department said Devaunte L. Hill, 21, is in custody for the murder of Nashville nurse and former Clarion University student Caitlyn Kaufman.

MNPD SWAT members arrested Hill on Friday at 6:15 a.m. at his East Nashville apartment. He is being charged with criminal homicide.

Kaufman was gunned down on I-440 on her way to work.“A concerned citizen came forward Thursday afternoon and identified Hill as a suspect,” said Metro Police Chief John Drake in a news conference Friday, “The concerned citizen also provided information about the whereabouts of the nine-millimeter [weapon] used in the murder.”The shell casings from Hill’s gun were a one hundred percent match with three casings found at the scene of the murder.

Police say they also traced his cell phone to the area that evening, and he did implicate himself in an interview after his arrest. They also confirm that Hill and Kaufman were strangers, but won’t say if it was road rage or not.

News 2 did some digging and found Hill has an alarming criminal history.

A juvenile record shows Hill convicted on three counts of attempted criminal homicide in 2016 when he was just 16. According to police, Hill’s grandma and mother were trying to wake him up for school when he started firing a handgun. He struck his grandma, 12-year-old sister, and six-year-old nephew.

Hill was taken by DCS and returned home in 2017. Two months later, he was arrested for aggravated robbery near his home and returned to DCS until his 19th birthday. In 2018, he was arrested for drug possession.

Just this year, he was charged with assault with bodily injury in January, driving on a suspended license in August, and now criminal homicide.

Police Seeking Second Suspect in Murder of Caitlyn Kaufman

NASHVILLE, Tn. (EYT) – Police are currently searching for a second man suspected in the murder of a Clarion University graduate who was fatally shot while driving to work in Nashville on December 3, 2020.

Officers throughout the Nashville area are on the lookout for James Edward Cowan, 28, (pictured above) the second suspect in the December 3 murder of Butler County native and Clarion University graduate Caitlyn Kaufman as she traveled to work on I-440.

An arrest warrant charging Cowan with criminal homicide is outstanding.

Cowan is alleged to have been with co-defendant Devaunte Hill, 21, when shots were fired from their vehicle into Kaufman’s car. Hill was arrested on December 11, 2020, on a charge of criminal homicide and implicated himself in Kaufman’s murder. He remains in the Downtown Detention Center.

The investigation, being led by Detective Chris Dickerson, shows that Cowan and Hill know each other. Analysis of cell phone data by MNPD electronics experts puts both men in the area of the crime scene when Kaufman was killed just after 6 p.m. on December 3.

The United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to Cowan’s Arrest. Nashville Crime Stoppers is offering an additional reward of up to $1,000. Anyone seeing Cowan or knowing his whereabouts is asked to call 615-742-7463. UPDATE (Jan. 6): Nashville police have named a second suspect in the shooting death of a Butler County native.

Police said Caitlyn Kaufman was shot and killed on her way to work as a nurse in Nashville in December.

Police in Nashville said Wednesday they are now searching for 28-year-old James Edward Cowan. An arrest warrant charging Cowan with criminal homicide has been issued, police said.

Devaunte Lewis Hill, 21, has already been arrested in the case.

PREVIOUS STORY: Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of Caitlyn Kaufman, a nurse in Nashville who was originally from Western Pennsylvania, and they say the investigation is ongoing.

Metro Nashville police said Devaunte L. Hill, 21, was arrested at his East Nashville apartment and is being charged with criminal homicide.

"He did consent to an interview. He did implicate himself in Caitlyn's murder. At this time, I cannot elaborate beyond that," Detective Chris Dickson said at a news conference.

Police said Hill and Kaufman did not know each other. Authorities also did not rule out the possibility of more arrests.

Hill was identified by "a concerned citizen" who came forward Thursday with information about the location of the gun used in Kaufman's death, police Chief John Drake said.

The break in the case came shortly after the announcement that a $50,000 reward was being offered by people in the local business community, Drake said.

"I understand that many of those persons involved in the rewards are dads who have families in Nashville and love Nashville deeply, and I thank them for their contribution," he said.

Kaufman's family said the 26-year-old woman was on her way to work treating COVID-19 patients. Family members said it was her dream to go to Nashville to be a nurse.

"She was a very compassionate young lady, had a heart of gold," said Kaufman's mother, Diane.

A police officer discovered Kaufman's gray SUV on the side of Interstate 440 on the night of Dec. 3. Kaufman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kaufman was traveling to St. Thomas West Hospital when shots were fired into her vehicle, police said in a statement.

Kaufman was from Chicora, Butler County, and went to Clarion University, where she was a member of the swimming and diving program.

"While it was a relief to be able to sign the arrest warrant, it was an exceptional relief to be able to call Diane Kaufman, who is back in Pennsylvania right now. Third Individual Arrested in Connection With Shooting of Caitlyn Kaufman

NASHVILLE, Tn. (EYT) – A third individual has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Clarion University graduate who was fatally shot while driving to work in Nashville on December 3, 2020.

According to a release from the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Dimeneshia Carter, 21, was with James Edward Cowan when he was arrested Tuesday night and was subsequently arrested on Wednesday morning.

Officials say Carter drove Cowan in a rental car to the apartment complex where he was arrested from a Sidco Drive motel. The couple were spotted by MNPD undercover detectives and were then surveilled by an MNPD helicopter as well as TBI and ATF agents.

According to police, during questioning, Carter admitted to staying with Cowan and providing him with transportation knowing he was wanted by authorities.

Cowan is currently being held without bond on a charge of criminal homicide for the December 3 shooting of Butler County native and Clarion University graduate Caitlyn Kaufman.

Carter is being held in lieu of a $75,000.00 bond on charges for harboring Cowan as a fugitive.

Police say $2,159.00 cash was seized from Cowan at the time of his arrest, and items seized from the rental car included two semi-automatic pistols, 126 rounds of ammunition, one pound of edible marijuana dummies, seven ounces of marijuana, 5.3 grams of powder cocaine, 238 Xanax bars, and 56 Adderall pills. Charges in relation to those items are pending.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. —

Two suspects charged in the killing of Nashville nurse Caitlyn Kaufman were in court Thursday.

Kaufman, a Butler County native, was shot and killed on her way to work as a nurse in Nashville in December.

The key witness, who the judge asked not to be identified for safety concerns, testified that Devaunte Hill implicated himself as the shooter pointing to road rage as the motive.

The witness said that he had traded guns with Hill, an associate, after the shooting. The informant saying the gun Hill passed on to him was the one used in Kaufman’s murder.

During testimony, that friend also said he had a conversation with Hill after the shooting, where Hill told the friend to get rid of the gun and showed the friend a news article about Kaufman’s death. At that point, Hill reportedly said Kaufman cut him off while driving, telling his friend he was quote “pissed and shot up the car.”

Hill’s attorney, on the other hand, tried to discredit the informant’s testimony by detailing his lengthy criminal history, pointing out that he was in possession of a murder weapon and implying that the informant may have been encouraged to frame someone else for the crime in order to cash in on the hefty reward.

In another bombshell revelation, the witness said he didn’t want to go to police with the information he had. Instead, he reached out to Kaufman’s mother on social media to inform her. When he didn’t receive a response, the witness claims he went to the hospital where Kaufman worked, hoping to get the message to her mom. That’s when police were called.

The case will proceed in February in front of a grand jury.
