Entire California school board resigns after caught mocking parents over school reopenings

After the board's president resigned, the remaining three members soon followed, according to a report

The president and three other members of a Northern California school board resigned Friday after reports that they made mocking comments about parents during a public video meeting about reopening schools.

The resignation of President Lisa Brizendine of the Oakley Union Elementary School District was confirmed to Fox News by Schools Superintendent Greg Hetrick.

The other members -- Kim Beede, Erica Ippolito and Richie Masadas -- who constitute the rest of the board, resigned later Friday, FOX 2 of the Bay Area reported.

Hetrick had issued an apology Thursday for what he described as board members' "truly inappropriate comments," which were made during a virtual meeting Wednesday. A group published a video of the meeting that showed board members complaining about parents wanting teachers to return to classrooms.

"The comments made were not in alignment with our vision and are definitely not what any of us stand for as leaders. I know that we lost trust with the community. I will not make excuses for what happened or why it happened," Hetrick told Fox News in a statement.

He continued: "I have been and continue to be committed to working together for the betterment of the Oakley Union Elementary School District students, staff and entire school community."

Brizendine issued an apology after announcing her resignation. "I am raising a 10-year-old with special needs and having him home during this pandemic, while also holding down two jobs to support my family has been a huge stress," she said. "I suffer with many of the same things that parents are going through from mental health issues to regression. My remark was callous and uncalled for and for that I am truly sorry."

The recorded meeting from Wednesday night was posted on social media and shows board members who appeared to believe the meeting was private. Brizendine appeared to mock parents who "want their babysitters back

"They forget there's real people on the other side of those letters that they're writing. ... They don't know what we know behind the scenes, and it's really unfortunate they want to pick on us because they want their babysitters back," she said. Other board members piled on, appearing to dismiss parents' concerns.

"If you're gonna call me out, I'm gonna f--- you up," one board member is heard saying.

The video drew a reaction earlier Friday from parent Ashley Stalf, whose 6-year-old daughter attends school in the district. She called the board's comments "heartbreaking" during an appearance on "Fox & Friends."

"We meet regularly with the board as parents and we’re constantly sending in letters and emails and telling them our griefs and our strife’s over distance learning," Stalf told Steve Doocy.

"It seems as of late that they mocked us, that we’re just complaining and we have nothing better to do."

Stalf said parents now wonder what teachers and board members say about them in private.

"What are their true intentions, if they feel so freely that they can talk, you know, on a mic that may or may not be hot, what’s truly being said behind closed doors?" said Stalf.

The video circulated online after being posted by an account called "Reopen California Schools," prompting an online petition for the board members to resign.

The president of the Contra Costa County Board of Education will likely appoint interim board members until new ones are elected or appointed, FOX 2 reported.

Parents across the U.S. are lobbying for their children to return to learning from teachers in classrooms as some students face the possibility of completing an entire school year without entering a classroom in addition to the months they lost at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Meanwhile, the White House is facing scrutiny for shifting language around President Biden's 100-day push for students to return to classrooms amid the coronavirus pandemic.                                                                                                                                                                                SEE VIDEO     ;    https://www.foxnews.com/us/oakley-california-school-board-member-resigns

This is the fault of the parties who hide the flaws of their candidates.  They need to beat the bushes for qualified candidates who are vetted and found to be good people.  Of course there would still be crappy candidates, but there would be fewer.  If all small voting entities, then it would flow right up the line.

I no longer have kids in school and no grandkids so I have no real "dog in this fight".  But like many folks I do have an opinion or two.  And no, I never served on a school board.

Seems to me that service on a school board should be mandatory.  It looks easy from the outside but balancing all the demands from budgets, unions, feeding programs, new age subjects... I'll bet this is one hellishly thankless nightmare.  If parents were "drafted" by random choice and required to serve one school year there would be a lot less achromony.

It's there for all to see. This happened in California. The state that the Liberals control with their arrogant attitudes.

The Liberals desire that ALL of America is supposed to be like California

The state that is full of rich Liberal Hollywood types that pretends their profession of ACTING is the real truth.

Suckers

And by the way, which state in this country is carrying the most debt?

Allowing the sh1tting on the streets and protecting the illegal boarder crossers to invade our country.

The gold seekers from years ago didn't screw up that state as bad as the Liberals has.

Now those useless Liberals are fleeing the state they ruined to inhabit other states to ruin those other states.

YA BABY WE NEED MORE LIBERALS IN OUR LIVES.

More communications have emerged from a California school board that resigned en masse earlier this year after being caught mocking parents during an online meeting.

Newly revealed post-meeting text messages from school board members in Oakley show some members quickly realized the hot mic comments were problematic -- although one member apparently saw an opportunity to make a sex joke, KNTV-TV of San Francisco reported.

"It’s bad," board President Lisa Brizendine wrote in one message, according to the station, which obtained the messages

"We just gotta suck it up and move on," board member Kim Beede responded.

"Nope, it’s so [bad]. Did you watch the video?" Brizendine wrote back.

Soon, other board members were suggesting that members hold a quick damage-control meeting about the comments caught on the hot mic, according to KNTV.

"Should we meet?" board member Richie Masadas asked his colleagues, according to the station.

"Should we do a quick three-way?" board member Erica Ippolito asked.

"Excuse me," Beede responded.

"We’re all married," Masadas added, tacking on four crying-laughing emojis, according to the station.

The school district officials who replaced the departed board members did not immediately respond to KNTV's or SFGate.com's request for comment.

CALIFORNIA SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS APPEAR TO MOCK PARENTS INVIDEO: 'THEY WANT THEIR BABYSITTERS BACK'

None of the four former board members responded either, according to KNTV.

The original uproar came in response to comments made on video Feb. 17, as school board members were setting up for an online meeting. Board members were apparently unaware that some parents and other members of the public were already logging on for the meeting – and were able to hear the board members’ pre-meeting banter.

Board members were heard making comments about parents who were complaining about schools not reopening fast enough following state-ordered coronavirus shutdowns.

"They want to pick on us because they want their babysitters back," Brizendine was heard saying at one point, according to SFGate.com

Other comments referred to parents as wanting kids back in school so the adults could smoke marijuana at ho

At one point, Beede was heard using profanity in reference to the parents, SFGate.com reported.

"B----, if you’re going to call me out, I’m going to f--- you up," Beede said, referring to a critic, according to KNTV.

The day after the Feb. 17 meeting, Oakley School Superintendent Gregory Hetrick issued an apology to the community.

On Feb. 19, Brizendine and the three other board members — Beede, Ippolito and Masadas – all resigned.                                              SEE VIDEOS    ;   https://www.foxnews.com/politics/california-school-board-regretted-hot-mic-incident-but-made-sex-joke-anyway-new-messages-reveal
