History Courses in Du Bois Area Schools

Are history courses part of the educational curricula for students in Du Bois Area Schools, or have they been eliminated?  Any information would be most appreciated.  Thank you.

In the High school  this year for freshman  they started at civil War and worked to WW I with some PA history in the middle.

 

Last year in Middle school they had Middle ages and Renasance(sp) up to the Civil War

I don't think they teach local history.  I know that my son had state history as well as US and world history.  He will be a senior next year.

I think there is n option in class choice for local history, maybe in 10th grade

There is a local history class offered as a half year elective.  Mr. Kilmer teaches it.  My son just took it this spring.  They even went down to the historical society as a mini field trip.

Thanks folks.  I was proud to learn that the Du Bois Area School District has a rich curriculum in history, beginning in the 7th grade through advanced placement courses in high school.  The curriculum includes:

 

7th Grade-World History: Beginnings to the Renaissance

8th Grade- U.S. and PA History and Geography: Beginnings to the Civil War

9th Grade-U.S. History: Reconstruction to the Beginning of WWII

11th Grade-Modern U.S. History: WWII to Present

Local History

AP U.S. History

AP U.S. History/Civil War

AP European History

My daughter did PA History in 4th or 5th grade, and has been having history every year.  This year she had Mr. Shade, and worked on civil war and up.  It is my understanding that it started more local like PA and then worked up to all aspects of national and worldwide issues by graduation.  Most teachers incorporate local history into these classes but there is no special class for local history. I don't think DuBois ranks high enough to have their own history books.

Actually, you would be surprised how much history this area has.  In fact Jan Nichols cataloged it in two volumes several years ago, I am sure the Library has these books and encourage you to check them out.

You taught at Oklahoma?  My wife taught there (she was also at Sykesville) a number of years ago also (she's at the middle school now).  Our ten year old daughter will be in fifth at Oklahoma this coming school year.  This past year, her class had a "generalized" overview of American history.

Mr. Kilmer, Mr. Thompson and Ms. Nichols have done exemplary work developing a local history curriculum in the Du Bois area.  I'm doing research on the history of M.I. McCreight and The Wigwam.   I hope that we can develop an M.I. McCreight power point presentation for our local history curriculum.   I would appreciate information by PM on how I might contact these folks.  Thanks.
