Carter
No pics, but remember going there as well on field trips. Oh yes the peacocks!
Petee
It was the Sher-De-Lin Game Farm named after three members of the family who owned it. I remember the alligator in the bathtub and a buffalo that could sometimes be seen from the main road.
slk59
I remember (vaguely) going there as well. Anyone remember the VT Smith Deer park which was in the current city park? mr.d
Petee
Originally the deer park was on the front corner of the VT Smith Dairy on the corner of Jared and Weber. Then they went to the city park back near what was called the Bum's Jungle where there was a lot of vandalism and eventually it was ended.
chingirl1
I remember the deer at the park and also wasen't that the city dump at one time maybe b 4 the deer? chingirl1
Who were the owners of the game farm Petee? I think I remember the buffalo from the road too.
Petee
I can't remember their last name but I'm sure someone from the Historical Society would know. Yes, the Bum's Jungle was where the old city dump was, and now the DuBois Woman's Club shelter is located.
chingirl1
Why was it called bums jungle? hobo's and stuff there? Do you remember the Joyce boys in the soap box derby? Probably late 40s or 50s.
Petee
If what I heard was true, homeless men used to actually live there. Sadly, the city dump probably offered some pickings and a place where the average citizen would probably not discover them. Later it was just an unkempt piece of land with scrubby trees and weeds where "kids" liked to hang out and get into trouble.
rich00
I went through "Bum's Woods" everyday, as did others in the 1960's, to get to the former Senior High School on Liberty Boulevard. They well worn paths. And it had a reputation for fun and mischief.
Petee
Did you ford the creek or detour through the back of the park? :-)
rich00
I used to live in the Fourth Ward near Jared and Weber. We crossed the Sandy on an old railroad tressel bridge. The bridge was later demolished.
niecee1963
I live right up the road from Sher De Lin Game Farm. I grew up beside it. I was pretty young when it closed, but I remember a couple of the times they called my mom to tell her the buffalo had gotten out and to keep us in the house. He would call and let her know when he was back in the fenced area. I loved the monkeys that he had down there. They were my favorite. The peacocks were gorgeous but the monkeys were different.
