  13. Mary G. Spangler, age 64 of DuBois, PA died Friday, July 29, 2022 at Penn Highlands Jefferson Manor in Brookville, PA. Born on April 21, 1958 in DuBois, PA, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Rita (Reinsel) Spangler, Sr. Mary was a graduate of Central Christian High School and the DuBois Business College. She had worked for many years at Prontock Beer Distributing, Inc. in DuBois. She was also a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Mary was a heroic fighter. She was a four-time cancer survivor and a frequent recipient of bad medical news, but she walked through it all with courage and determination. Mary was indulgent with her young nieces and nephews. In one case, she gave two of them yarn to play with and they hung the yarn wherever they could, turning her bedroom into a multi-colored spider web. Although she didn’t travel physically, Mary liked to travel mentally by amassing a formidable collection of postcards. In addition, she liked to learn about the iconic sinking of the ocean liner Titanic. Mary was skilled in several different types of crafting, including cross stitch, crochet and latch hooking. A particularly distinctive project was the two sister pillows she made with her sister-in-law, Joyce. Each collaborator cross stitched two copies of a scene. Then Joyce used one of her scenes and one of Mary’s to make two pillows. Then they each took one pillow. Mary is survived by her siblings; (William A. Spangler, Jr. and his wife Joyce of Quakertown, PA, Kathy Kowalczyk and her husband Paul of Hawley, PA and Nick Spangler and his wife Karen of York, PA), two nieces (Kara Kowalczyk & her husband Zack and Tiffany Spangler), and three nephews (Dan Kowalczyk and Brett and Ryan Spangler). Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 11 a.m. from St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to DuBois Central Catholic, P.O. Box 567, DuBois, PA 15801. Online condolences can be sent to http://baronickfuneralhome.com/obituaries
  14. Katie Gallagher, 1986-2022 Separation - W.S. Merwin Your absence has gone through me Like thread through a needle. Everything I do is stitched with its color. Kathryn Marie Gallagher - Katie - was born on Friday, August 15, 1986 in DuBois, PA. Katie was a painter and internationally-recognized fashion designer. She embodied the strong work ethic of a Leo, her star sign, and strived for perfection in all of her designs. Her newest tattoo, completed just weeks before she died, depicted Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows – seven, the biblical reference to completion and perfection. Katie established her own fashion line, Katie Gallagher, in New York City in 2010. Under this label, she completed 26 collections that premiered during New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week. She was working on her 27th collection, which she planned to show this fall. Over the years, Katie’s work has been celebrated by Vogue, The Cut, Elle, Glamour, Refinery 29, W, Interview, and Nylon, among many others, for her attention to detail, superior craftsmanship, and creativity. Katie was a talented and innovative pattern maker and seamstress. She handmade every piece in her collections and commissions using her industrial sewing machines as well as a household machine handed down to her from her paternal grandmother, Evelyn. Katie dressed cultural icons from Daphne Guiness to Lady Gaga, Rita Ora, and Laverne Cox. An icon herself, she also modeled for several fellow designers and labels. Though she grew up in rural Pennsylvania, graduating from State College Area High School (2005) and later the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, 2009), her home was in Chinatown, New York City, where she spent most of her adult life and honed her skills as a designer. More recently, after helping arrange flowers for one of her sister’s weddings, she became a self-taught and talented florist in New York and briefly in Los Angeles. She loved to arrange funeral flowers, and her favorites were carnations, lavender roses, dahlias, and baby’s breath, but she seemed to love them all. Like A.A. Milne’s Eeyore, she preferred gloomy days and cold rain. As a child, she was drawn to the woods, mixing potions and playing there with her sisters. Animals were drawn to her gentle and calm demeanor. She could talk to them and once even touched a deer in the stillness of the trees. She loved poetry and heavy metal. She felt deeply, though she couldn’t always articulate it, and she had an enormous, forgiving heart. When she was younger, she was an obsessive athlete, a gymnast, and a state qualifying long-distance runner. Katie loved Halloween, witches, and ghosts, and had the tattoos to let everyone know it. She was unique, beautiful, smart, unabashed, and always wanting. She was hardworking and talented, with so many ideas and plans for future projects. We are so proud of who she was and all she achieved in her brief but full and beautiful life. She was Katie, our daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Katie died unexpectedly at her home in New York City on Saturday, July 23, 2022. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined. She is survived by her loving parents, Barry and Debra (Kulbatsky) Gallagher, State College, PA; her sisters, Gwendolyn Gallagher (Jonathan Sheridan), Dublin, Ireland, Lara Jean Gallagher (Alex Morris), Los Angeles, CA, and Marlee Ann Gallagher (Greg Sciulli), Pittsburgh, PA; her niece, Ramona; her nephews, Arthur and Adrian; her grandmother, Patricia “Bear” Kulbatsky, DuBois, PA; her beloved Maine Coon, Sveater; and many other family members, friends, clients, and colleagues she met along the way. Family and friends are welcome to celebrate and mourn Katie’s life at the following: Visitation: Wednesday, August 3, 4-7PM, Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College, PA 16801. Funeral Mass: Thursday, August 4, 11AM, Our Lady of Victory, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College, PA 16801. Visitation: Friday, August 5, 1-3PM, Baronick Funeral Home, 211 S. Main Street, DuBois, PA 15801. Interment: Friday, August 5, 3:30 PM, St. Joseph’s Cemetery, DuBois, PA. A celebration of Katie’s life and work will be planned in New York City later this year. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to a legacy fund that has been set up in Katie’s memory. Contribute at www.gofundme.com/f/katie-gallagher-legacy. In Blackwater Woods Mary Oliver In Blackwater Woods Mary Oliver Look, the trees are turning their own bodies into pillars of light, are giving off the rich fragrance of cinnamon and fulfillment, the long tapers of cattails are bursting and floating away over the blue shoulders of the ponds, and every pond, no matter what its name is, is nameless now. Every year everything I have ever learned in my lifetime leads back to this: the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation, whose meaning none of us will ever know. To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.

COLLINS PLANS WORKSHOPS/CONCERT IN DUBOIS Nationally known mountain dulcimer performer/teacher Joe Collins will visit DuBois on Monday, August 15, to provide workshops and perform in concert. The activities will be held at the DuBois Area Historical Society, 30 W. Long Avenue, DuBois, beginning at 10 a.m. The cost for one workshop is $20; $30 for two; $35 for three; the fourth workshop is free if the other three workshops are taken. Workshop participants pay at the door. The tip for the 4:30 p.m. concert will be “pass the hat.” The day is sponsored by the Sandy Lick Mountain Dulcimer Players. To pre-register, e-mail ginnyschott@gmail.com or telephone 814-371-4627. The workshops and ability level are: 10 a.m. Can You Sing with that Thing? (upper novice & up). A workshop on using the mountain dulcimer as an accompaniment instrument. Participants will play some rhythm and blues, rock, folk and maybe even country rhythms while singing some popular songs. The main focus will be on using chords and strumming rhythms for accompaniment. 11:15 a.m. Playing Pretty (intermediate & up), focuses on developing technique that will help participants become more expressive on the dulcimer and less mechanical. The class will go beyond learning the notes to learning about how to use dynamics and phrasing to make music more emotive (capable of pulling out feelings). Exercises will be shared that may be used to continue to develop these skills. 2 p.m. Funny Songs for Your Repertoire (all levels). A kick back and have fun workshop, playing and singing a variety of songs to tickle the funny bone. A portion of the lesson will focus on how to use the dulcimer as an accompaniment instrument while helping people laugh. 3:15 p.m. Harping on the Dulcimer – Songs of Turlough O'Carolan (intermediate & up). A repertoire workshop of songs from the great, blind bard of Ireland arranged for the mountain dulcimer. O’Carolan was a harpist/composer at the end of the 17th into the early 18th century. Although he never wrote down any of his music, over 200 tunes have survived and are played all over the world today. These tunes are especially beautiful on the mountain dulcimer. 4:30 p.m. Concert. Joe Collins fell in love with the mountain dulcimer in 1978. At the time he was doing occasional coffeehouses as a college student in eastern North Carolina, and a good friend thought that he might be interested in tackling another instrument besides the guitar. He took her little instrument home, and she did not get it back for three years. Today, he plays a lot less guitar and lot more dulcimer than in those early days. After competing in a number of competitions and winning several regional competitions over a 10-year period, he won the National Mountain Dulcimer Championship in 2007 in Winfield, Kansas. Over the past 20 years, he has had the opportunity to teach and play in festivals from California to the east coast, from Florida to Vermont, and a lot of places in between. A folk musician and mountain dulcimer player since the late 70s, Collins combines mountain dulcimer wizardry with good, solid vocals. He is a songwriter and vocalist, inspired by artists like Simon & Garfunkle, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, and Kris Kristofferson. But as he grows older and pudgier, he realizes that perhaps the most profound influence on his musical bent was the old Burle Ives records he listened to over and over again as a kid. His performances are sprinkled with a lot of humor and some excellent mountain dulcimer playing - sure to bring a smile to audiences of all ages. Joe graduated from East Carolina University with bachelor and masters degrees in English, from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with a master of divinity with religious education, and from North Carolina State University with a doctorate in adult education. He has worked in religious education for most of his professional career and is professor emeritus of religion at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. Now that he is retired, he has more time for dulcimer, writing music, and traveling to work with clubs and in festivals.
