I look at this picture and I can't help but think it is at the corner of Scribner Ave and High Street .... The house on the right reminds me a lot of the house on the corner across from the old Paul Short funeral home and the church. The building on the left would be just about in between where the church is and where Scribner Ave seventh grade school use to be ......

I was dating a girl from Reynoldville and I left her house in a 71 nova, by the time I hit Mountain Run Rd, I was pushing snow with my bumper..
Christmas eve blizzard of '78 .... remember it well .... hung out at the old P.O. for a while then rode around doing donuts in PT/ Riverside and the Mall parking lots .... had a '71 Demon with "posi-traction" . with a good set of heavy lug winter tread tires on , it went through snow like a tank .....

This is Max ... he passed away on Monday ..... for the 13 years that he was with us he was much more then just our pet ..... he was our 4 am alarm clock (whether you wanted awake or not ) .... he was our hair tie and jewelry bandit (we are still trying to find where he hid stuff) ......and he was my midnight snack buddy ( I hope there are plenty of string cheese sticks in kitty heaven ) ..... but most of all he was a very loved part of our family who we miss dearly and will not even attempt to replace .... Rest in Peace Max ....

According to Wikipedia President Nixon visited Spain on October 2nd and 3rd of 1970 ......

If you jog or ride your bike around the curve by Keller Brother's Dry cleaning you are taking your life into your hands. There is NO room between the cars and the curb as you head towards Sheetz.
That is just one of the many reasons this area needs this trail way ..... think of how many times the runners / joggers / walkers and bike riders of the area have come up against the very situation you just mentioned ...... I know I'll be at the meeting on the 24th ..... and I hope all of you will be also....
-
OK ...so maybe we could set up a meeting for all who are interseted and start to plan where to take this next .... Rich from the PM you sent me it appears you have some experience in matters like these (where to begin and who to contact) ..... would you be able to take the lead ?
-
This would be awesome. There is nowhere to bike ride in this town and to have something like what brockway has would be money well spent and something well used in this area.
OK ..... so lets not just talk about it ....lets see if we can get something started and built .....whether you hike .... jog ....or ride a bike .... it would benefit all .... so lets see a show of who would be in .... it may not be easy and may take some time but I feel it would be well worth the effort ....

I think the last time I was back there was 1974 ..... WOW ...I must be getting old ;D

I used to run from Highland St. & down across Maple bridge & out to the mall years ago. There was a path then & a train also out to the mall. Got caught one day between the water/bank & climbed up the steep bank waiting for the train to pass, only slightly frightened hanging onto some weeds for support.
Anyway, I think any improvement would be great. The plan, if I'm correct, is to eventually connect with other trails/towns. That'd be amazing.
This thread is not for couch potatoes. They cannot understand the natural euphoria experienced with being in touch with nature. More people should get out, they might like it. Biking is easy, fun, and a great stress reliever.
By the way, the Brockway to Ridgway trail is such a beautiful & flat trail. Definitely one of my favorites!
You are so right about it being a stress reliever ...... When I'm riding ...I think of nothing but riding .... We always stop at the swinging bridge when riding from Brockway to Ridgway .... I found it a great way to leave my worries far behind (if only for a little while)
-
Unlike the walkway, there is nothing "scenic" about that area. As I remember it from years ago, it is a pretty nasty place. It certainly is as remote as you can get. I wouldn't go there alone, especially in the old tunnel, and definately not a place you would want kids to go.
I agree .... there is nothing very scenic around the tunnel area but once you get past the Maple ave. bridge the scenery does get better and the tunnel area has become a pretty nasty place because.... we have let it become a pretty nasty place ...... I'll bet these rails to trails (on the link below) were most likely in the same condition when they first started ..... from the pictures on the website it looks like a really nice place today .... I know I do plan on going there to ride soon and will take some pics to post on here ....
-
I'm not from around here originally, so I could be wrong, but by looking at that map on the link.....isn't that out in the middle of no where? It looks like it may be near the elementary school.
How does a bicyclist or walker get from point A to point B now?
The former train rails that could be used for rails to trails actually could start out behind the car wash on Brady street by "number two shaft road" and run the entire way to Lezzers. I once knew how many miles it was between those two points.... but I dont remember anymore :-/ but it could also be made to tie into the beaver walkway by branching off of the railway and going behind the creamery and tie into the walkway bridge by Showers field ...... many years ago the train tracks actually did "Y" off back there and ran across the creek to where Martins is now ..... If you ever get the chance go and check out the rails to trails in Brockway I think you'll be amazed at just how nice and popular it really is ....
-
I think it is a wonderful idea ....... I grew up in the area of the tunnel back in the 60's and remember when trains used it daily ..... I would love to see not only the tunnel but also the two bridges ( 1 over Maple ave and 1 over Chestnut) converted to walker / rider use and even completed the entire way to Shaffer road (the mall area) instead of becoming an eyesore and dumping ground .... If you have never been on a rails to trails bike / hike path.... you should try it ..... we use the one in Brockway all the time and have ridden just short of being in Ridgway it is very a peaceful and very beautiful trail .... I believe it would be a welcomed addition the community and would also cut down on the congestion of bike and walkers on beaver walkway.

Finish this sentence.....A contest with no answer is _____ ____ _____ { no, there is no prize}
A contest with no answer is ...... just a question
-
Sorry! No prize!
I do NOT know the year the picture was taken. My dad had this picture from his parents in a box. I thought it'd be neat to see some guesses from DuBois people and some older folks.
I had guessed the car to be a late 40s Desoto but this is way before my time!
I really don't see how you got 48 stars? I have a much higher resolution scan of this picture and I don't even see 10 stars. But maybe you found something I didn't see?
I will agree that the picture is from the early 50s but THERE IS NO DEFINITE ANSWER since the person(s) who could have taken the picture are no longer with us.
It's still fun guessing right?
I'll see what else I can find and do this again.
Picture thief ........ ;D just kidding ...... I'll check with your uncle ...... he may know
-
I'm old .....but not that old ....... I would wonder as to why the flag is at half mast ...... Did someone important die (former President or VP)
that may give you some clues as to when it was taken ..... I will tell you that if your grandpa was still alive he would probably know

I have a flower bed outside the front of the house by the porch.
The neighborhood cats like to poop in it. Gross. Plus I am pregnant and I can't be breathing it anyways.
What is a good deterant to keep them from pooping in there without being harmful to the flowers and our two dogs?
Remington super x number 4 shot ..........

I would have to think the DuBois Mall Picture to be around the mid to later 1970 ...... possibly 1976 or 1977 if you look close at the lower right hand corner there is a building below and behind the Sunoco sign ....... If I remember right that was the golf ball driving range that once was where Eat & Park stands today .......I remember going there many times.
-
i went there(second ave school)...lol....now everyone knows i'm old
looks as spooky as i remember it
Second Ave was a great school ........was a lot of fun going to that school ....the teachers were young and a whole lot of fun and easy to get along with ......

it was on the same side as high rise....was there really 8 lanes in there?
yes .....bowled there many times ....... was a fun place to just hang out

Birds Eye View of Du Bois

I would have to say the picture is taken from Brady Street , just as you would crest the hill between Olive Ave.and Weber Ave.
The church steeple in the back ground looks to be the church at the corner of High Street and Long Ave. and the large building to the right of it looks like the old Courier Express building. Look closely at the house on the right in the foreground, if you remove the front proch it looks like the red apartment building that is near the corner of Brady St. and Weber Ave.that sits on the right as you are leaving DuBois.
