  5. Beatrice Ann "Bea" Pitrone, 88, of DuBois, PA, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Christ the King Manor, surrounded by her family. Born June 16, 1935, in Punxsutawney, PA, she was the daughter of the late Max and (Amy) Work Crawford, who preceded her in death. Bea was the youngest of eight children and their parent's last surviving child. Bea was a 1954 graduate of Punxsutawney High School, where she was a talented majorette known for her ability to twirl fire. Bea met her future husband, Anthony, in Punxsy. Bea and Tony were married at Saints Cosmas and Damian Church on January 22, 1955. She enjoyed serving her community in various capacities for many decades and gaining new friends. A devoted member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in DuBois, PA, the greater DuBois area benefited from her many church leadership roles, including being the founding manager of a religious articles store in DuBois called House of Nazareth. She never judged; she only helped whenever and wherever necessary. Her Catholic faith guided her devotion to those in need. She created and administered St. Catherine's first "Jesse Tree," ensuring children throughout the area would feel excited to open gifts on Christmas morning. Bea was a longtime member of her Church's Rosary Altar Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister for decades. She spent countless hours, in all sorts of weather, fair and foul, delivering the Holy Eucharist to homebound members of the Church. Bea was also instrumental in developing St. Catherine's Nazareth in the Woods outreach center, all while helping to organize yearly Thanksgiving turkey deliveries to families in need, teaching Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults classes to people wishing to join the Church, and visiting local hospital patients as a member of her Church's Good Samaritans group. While with the Good Samaritans, Bea founded the St. Catherine's Food Pantry. In 2010, Bea and Tony were awarded the Bishop's Commemoration Award in a special ceremony acknowledging decades of service and support of the Catholic Diocese of Erie. Bea was also highly active with her children's education, primarily when fundraising for her beloved Central Catholic High School Cardinals. Bea made her trademark spaghetti sauce and meatballs for Central's Palm Sunday dinners, serving thousands of patrons over the years. Bea and Tony were humbled in 1993 when DuBois Central Catholic High School awarded them a Golden Key for decades-long support of Catholic education in the DuBois area. Bea was also a trusted member of Central's team of grandparent volunteers, helping teachers and staff in many capacities. She enjoyed administering goodwill and kindness to [then] DuBois Regional Medical Center patients. She was a longtime member of the DuBois Hospital Auxiliary. She loved her time with the Kichtennaires, a famous group of "musicians" who entertained civic groups with their silly brand of music. Many who are reading this have been welcomed into the Baronick Funeral Home as she worked there as a greeter from its inception until just a few years ago. Bea lovingly balanced church and civic responsibilities with her precious family time. Bea's children cherish the education in service taught elegantly by their mother's actions. Thank you, mom. She loved holidays; whether recently hosting Fourth of July family reunions or her fabulous Christmas celebrations, she pored over the details. Her family and friends looked forward to Bea's homemade ravioli, braciole, hand-twisted Easter biscuits, and her cream pie. Let's not forget her trademark Groundhog Day cookies, baked by the hundreds yearly. Each time Bea prepared a family favorite, it was as though she was telling us how much she loved being with us. Her food was a warm hug, and friends and family couldn't get enough. Bea is survived by her children Marianne Wymer & husband, Bob of Avon, IN; Kathleen Puleo & husband, Bob of Oil City, PA; Anthony, Jr. & wife, Christine of Marietta, GA; Gregory & wife, Marla of Glen Allen, VA; and Andrew & wife, Jennifer of Erie, PA. As was generally the case, Bea and Tony's friends became family, especially their bonus son (John Baltrus & wife Júrate) of Pittsburgh, PA. Bea's love for her grandchildren was a hallmark. She adored their smiles, voices, visits, & kisses! Her grandchildren include Lesly (Bobby) & Christopher Wymer; Gionna, Vincent, & Nicholas Pitrone; Danielle, Rosemary, & Julia Pitrone; Noah, Josh, & Sam Puleo; Lauren (Jacob) Van Scoyoc; and great-granddaughter Amelia-Rose. Additionally, Bea is survived by her brother-in-law Dick Pitrone and daughter-in-law, Susan Pitrone. Bea was preceded in death by her husband, Tony, who passed away 14 days ago, December 27, 2023; her dear son, Bernie; two brothers, Paul and Edward Crawford; and five sisters, Maxine Dellamaestra, Marian Williams, Helen Jordan, Lois Palmer, and Bettie McDermott. The Pitrone family wishes to thank the Christ the King Manor staff in DuBois for their dedication to Bea's health and comfort. Whenever you see or hear a gently buzzing bee, please consider that a gift from our dear mother. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2024 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 15, 2024 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel at Christ the King Manor with Msgr. Richard Siefer and Fr. Thomas Suppa concelebrants. Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery. Memorial donations may be placed with DuBois Catholic Schools, PO Box 567, DuBois, PA 15801. 11. Nancy Heffner, 91, passed away Thursday, Dec 28th, 2023 at her home in DuBois, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry C. Aurand and Mary Doutt Aurand. Nancy’s wit, charm and baton twirling skills caught the eye of husband #1, Robert (Kite) Scott. A whirlwind romance ensued and along came Robert, Gary, Gail & Mary Ann. After 24 years of marriage, Bob passed away leaving Nancy a widow. She then met strapping husband #2, Tony Heffner and became a stepmother to Patty, Becky, Cindy, Sue, Toni, and Brad. She often said she was an influencer and got remarried before it was cool. Never afraid to share a joke or her opinion, she loved an audience. She was known to skim her joke book before PTA meetings, hospice visits and treatments at Hahne Cancer Center. She hardly missed a murder show, her morning coffee & bougie biscotti or a heated discussion on current events. While some turn to embroidery, truth bombs were Nancy’s hobby: “If she needs a semi for her emotional baggage, that’s not a good sign.” She was loyal, supportive and appropriately devastated when her crush (actor Jon Stewart) left (TV). Nancy adored her circle of glamorous Dubois ladies, enjoyed her time at Trinity Methodist Church and admired her co-workers at Dubois Area Hospital. While Nancy was immensely proud of her children, she promptly forgot about them when her 16 beloved grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren were born. (As 5-star Gi-Gi’s do.) When discussing her many accomplishments during an interview, she was asked the following: “As a child, what did you dream of becoming?” This was her answer: “When I was a young girl, you were never asked. Your opinion and dreams weren’t important, you were just expected to be a teacher or a mother. But I always envisioned myself as a dancer, if I could, I would have been a Rockette living in New York City...” While she never made it to Radio City Music Hall, she lived her life unapologetically true to herself. As you navigate 2024, break out your dancing shoes and borrow some of Nancy’s vibe. Be loud, bold, opinionated, funny, wrong, stubborn - simply be you. And if no one has asked you lately, “What is your dream?” In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the DuBois Public Library, 31 South Brady St., DuBois, PA 15801. After all, as Nancy would say, “flowers...they look nice but I’m allergic.” Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home with Pastor Rebecca Edwards officiating. Burial will follow n Morningside Cemetery. Online condolences can be made to http://www.baronickfuneralhome.com/condolence

  18. Paxton L. Stewart, 44, of Sykesville PA, passed away Monday, December 25th, 2023 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Paxton was born on April 11th, 1979, in DuBois PA, to Rob and Edye (Michael) Stewart. After graduating from DuBois Area High School in 1997, he attended Triangle Tech where he received a Specialized Technology degree in Architectural Computer-Aided Drafting and Design in 1999. He went on to work as a draftsman for Glass Erectors in Reynoldsville, PA, where he was also a current business partner of the group. Paxton was an extremely passionate person who cared deeply about his family, friends, and members of his community. He was an avid volunteer to countless organizations and causes and never wanted any recognition or praise in return. His only goal was to make others smile. He was devoted to God and his church families beginning with Grace United Methodist Church in Sykesville, PA, then later starting a new journey at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where he helped with many children’s events and volunteered at catechism and Sunday school classes at both churches. He touched the lives of many families and children with his work in the church, not only through his volunteer work, but also by giving anonymous monetary donations and gifts to children to make their day a little brighter. During his recent hospital stay in Pittsburgh, those same children sent him dozens of cards wishing him well, which brought Paxton tremendous joy in those last few days. Paxton was an avid supporter of youth sports and community athletic organizations, especially the DuBois Challenger Baseball League. He was a frequent fixture in the stands and never missed a game over the course of many years. He loved cheering on the athletes, but especially took great pride in watching his cousin, Preston Freemer, take the field. When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, Paxton was concerned about the front-line workers’ well-being and the heavy burdens they were facing. In an effort to lift their spirits, he spearheaded a fundraising campaign to provide food for essential employees who were not afforded the ability to stay home and quarantine. With the help of donations from local citizens and businesses, Paxton was able to have over 60 pizzas delivered throughout the community to brighten the days of these workers. Paxton volunteered a lot of his time out of the public eye, as well. He would visit cemeteries and clean the headstones of strangers, he would scrub and clean the areas around the cemetery, and was also a significant contributor to the Find a Grave website, where photos can be uploaded of an individual to put a face to their final resting place. He did this by collecting yearbooks from all over and going through the painstaking process of finding the people whose grave he had come across and adding it to the site. He felt it was an honor to do this for families who may not be able to visit their loved one’s final resting place. In addition to his volunteer work, Paxton was a member of the Old Town Beagle Club in which he served as secretary and ran the club’s yearly rabies clinic. He was a member of the Falls Creek Eagles, the Sykesville Community Improvement Association (SCIA), and also participated in the men’s Monday night bowling league at the DuBois Lanes. He was an avid concert-goer and amassed a large collection of souvenirs from his many trips. When Paxton was not busy volunteering or helping others, he enjoyed spending time at his camp in Benezette, PA, The Hairy Bear, where he also held a yearly ‘Crock’toberfest and offered an open invite, not just to his family and friends, but to the public, as well. It was a weekend for friendly competition and a trophy for the best Crockpot meal, but most of all, a getaway dedicated to providing a nice and relaxing time for all who came. Paxton’s very last act of giving came on Christmas day in the form of organ donation. He received an honor walk from the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) and the staff at Alleghany General Hospital as he gave his final gift of himself to save lives. For all that Paxton gave to others, it was only fitting that he passed on Christmas Day and gave others the hope of a Christmas miracle. Paxton leaves behind his loving parents, Rob and Edye Stewart of DuBois, PA; his brother, Cody Stewart; his nephews, Damon and Grayson Stewart, whom he loved with all his heart; and his beloved and faithful dog, Watson. Paxton is also survived by a large extended family, including many aunts, uncles, and cousins who he cherished dearly and would do anything for. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ron and Marilyn (Klingensmith) Stewart; his maternal grandparents, Thomas (Pete) and Mary Imogene (Brennan) Michael; and two uncles, Kevin Michael and John Kelly Rusciolelli. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home with Msgr. Richard Siefer officiating. Burial will be in Beechwoods Cemetery. Paxton’s greatest passion was supporting his local community theater, the Paul G. Reitz Theater in DuBois, PA, where he served on the Board of Directors, regularly worked the box office, was a season ticket holder, and was an active promoter of the theater’s efforts. In the same giving spirit, the family requests that any memorial donations in Paxton’s name be made to the Paul G. Reitz Theater CRI in DuBois, PA, by calling (814) 375-4274 or emailing thereitztheater@gmail.com to help carry on his legacy of giving to others.
