badmonkey
Can someone point me in the right direction to registar for the Christmas bird count? I have a busy, established bird feeder in my yard and would love to take part in the count. I did it many, many years ago in The Pittsburgh area and it was cool. Thanks! Guest snellma
Ok, what's a Christmas bird count? Do you count how many different types of birds you have or just how many birds?
Seuly
The CBC is done every year during a certain time frame before and after Christmas. The DuBois count is on Jan. 3 this year. Counts are done all over the country during this time to compare the winter bird populations from one year to the next. This can indicate changes in the environment, which will ultimately affect humans. One counts each different species and the total # of each species. The goal is to get as many different breeds of birds as possible in a 24 hour period, along with as many individual birds as possible. Anyone can count at feeders and/or go out in a certain area surrounding DuBois (which is a 15 mile diameter circle). Counters in the field each do a certain area so there is no duplication of data. Counters can go out singly or in groups of 2 or more. I used to help Jocelynn run the CBC count for several years. If anyone is interested in participating, please contact Dr. Smrekar (contact info above) to sign up and get a tally sheet.

badmonkey
I just got off of the phone with Dr. Smrekar. She seemed like a kind and knowledgeable person. She is sending a tally form to me and I will be ready to go bright and early on Jan 3rd. Thanks to all who posted information. I appreciate it. lavender
She is indeed a very nice lady. Let us know what you report. It sounds interesting. I'd attempt it myself if I knew one bird from another. If they ever start counting weeds or wildflowers I will be the first on in line.
