mr.d
13 starving horses in Jefferson County removed through search warrant By Bridget McClure Thursday, September 29th 2016 Thirteen starving horses were removed from a home on Howe Road in Jefferson County through a search warrant under the direction of the Humane Society Police Officer Debbie McAndrew. CORSICA - Thirteen starving horses were removed from a home on Howe Road in Jefferson County through a search warrant under the direction of the Humane Society Police Officer Debbie McAndrew. Charges were filed against Leonard Hughes Thursday for neglecting to properly care for and feed the horses. He's facing 13 summary offenses. According to the search warrant, the horses were found with no hay or grass to eat and no water to drink. Through the help of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, McAndrew and Willow Run Sanctuary & Adoptions, the horses were loaded into multiple trailers on Sept. 15. "They are suffering from severe emaciation from a lack of nutrition and have absolutely no muscle tone at all," Willow Run Sanctuary & Adoptions President Margo Stefanic said. The horses are being housed temporarily at Willow Run. Margo said they were seen by a veterinarian and although they're considered in stable condition, they have a long road to recovery. Due to the degree of neglect, some of the horses may not live. They now have a strict meal plan to follow. They get hay in their stomachs first, and then are gradually introduced to grass to let their digestive systems properly take over. "The ones that are the most extreme, we will watch vigilantly and hope that they will recover but there's no way of knowing if they'll make it for at least a couple months," Stefanic said. Now these 13 horses are looking for forever homes. "We do not own these horses and we don't know which way that will go," Stefanic said. "We hope that the court of law will see favorable, remove the horses and give Willow Run Sanctuary custody." Willow Run Sanctuary is in desperate need of monetary and hay donations. soccermom
How in the hell can you only get summary offenses for something like that? WMJ77
Jay
Things like this just make me sooo mad! How could any human being be so cruel? If you can't take care of them, then give them to someone who can.
Petee
There's more situations like this folks. Don't haunt your neighbors, but if you see something questionable then at least ask someone in authority to check on it. It may be nothing but a short term health problem, but what if it's not? Buster99
I was crying when I read this. Those poor animals. WTH is wrong with people. I get upset if I run over a squirrel. How could someone stand by and watch these innocent creatures be tortured? I would like to shoot him personally. WMJ77
beenthere
I'm surprised they did anything. There's a horse near me that looks almost as bad.The people keep it in a small enclosure that's about 20x20ft and feed it moldy round bales.I know that the HS has been there multiple times and nothing has been done. Petee
I'm sure there are desperate people among us that we will never know about. Keep your eyes open.
Jay
Why does every thread have to turn into an argument or put down? I'm sure we can all agree that there are both needy people and needy animals out there. We should be praying for each and every one of them and trying to help wherever we can. steelnut
When I was making dinner yesterday, I made the mistake of looking at the television screen when this report came on, it brought tears. I just don't understand how this happens. If you have an animal and aren't able to take care of it, reach out to someone, anyone to re-home them so that they can have a decent life. Animals are reliant on their owners, they have no voice.
