Jobs and Minimum Wage Increase

Recommended Posts

Just over a year ago people were complaining about pay and raising the minimum wage.  Forward to today. Most jobs are now starting around $12 or higher  hour (Min wage $7.25)    And still dont want to work . Not even part time.  On CNBC yesterday the workforce numbers were bad. People are still complaining. A restaurant near Yellowstone was paying $15 hour to wash dishes. In a commercial dishwasher.  40% arent working and another 40 % said theyd like to quit there jobs. Their should be no excuse for some high school kids or college kids who need a little extra cash this Summer. Yes some places are hiring them to get through the Summer but wait till Fall and we will be right back where we started this May.

Dont complain the next time you go somewhere and they are slow because of no staff.  Or are poorly trained.

Places like Yellowstone,  and other tourist destinations, have staff shortages this year because of Visa issues for their foreign workforce due to Covid. Most restaurants in National Parks are managed by large corporations that bring in a foreign workforce each year. That's been pretty well covered by the media.

Anyone that worked manufacturing back in the late 80's early 90's can attest to automation being brought in as wages kept increasing. The higher the wage the more cost efficient buying equipment becomes, along with increased costs of providing health insurance and other benefits not to mention the increase in Social Security and Medicare that the employer gets.

This is a complex issue.  Companies need to find a happy medium in regards to automation and staffing levels.  Automation saves time and greater ROI.  Certain staff levels earn companies major tax breaks and other incentives.  Companies want to keep a foot in both buckets.
