Kristin Beighey “Kris” Swope, age 69, of DuBois, PA, released our hands to take the hand of Jesus on June 23, 2021, following a long struggle with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Kris was born December 18, 1951, the daughter of Jac Laverne Beighey and Martha Rose (Vestal) Beighey, both of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her loving husband, Terry Swope, and daughter, Meghan Swope. While Kris only had one child, she is also survived by hundreds of children she cared for and served as a kindergarten and first grade teacher for 34 years.

Kris grew up in DuBois, graduated from DuBois Area High School in 1969 and attended Pennsylvania State University before graduating from Auburn University. She spent several years teaching in Tacoma, WA and Lubbock, TX before returning home. Kris and Terry reconnected as majorette instructor and band director, respectively, at DuBois Area High School and were married on November 26, 1986.

Kris was active in Delta Kappa Gamma and enjoyed annual beach vacations with family and friends, weekly lunches with lifelong friends and visiting Meghan in greater Washington, DC. She was known for spending her own income on school supplies, and birthday and holiday gifts for children she taught who otherwise had none. Kris helped launch the Make-A-Wish Light Up a Child’s Life holiday fundraising competition within the DuBois Area School District. After retiring from teaching in 2008, she enjoyed an “encore career” as the Volunteer Coordinator at Penn Highlands DuBois from 2010 to 2017 and helped to plan and host the annual Holiday Ball.

Awaiting Kris’s heavenly arrival were her beloved only brother Lawrence Jerome “Larry” Beighey, sister-in-law Carole Beighey, brother-in-law David Swope and father-in-law Reed Swope.

In addition to her husband and daughter, she is survived by her mother-in-law Betty Swope; brother-in-law Tim Swope; sister-in-law Marie Swope; beloved nieces and nephews Basil “Skip” Beighey, Susie Morell, Thomas Beighey, Timothy Beighey, Elizabeth Miller, Anne Woodbury, Erica Manthey and Sonia Swope; and many grand nephews and nieces whom she loved like grandchildren.

Friends and family will be received Sunday, June 27, 2021 from 4-7 p.m. at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc.

A funeral service will be held Monday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor Aaron Erdley officiating.

Interment will be in Morningside Cemetery.

Although flowers are appreciated, the family suggests honoring Kris’ legacy through a donation to donorschoose.org, which provides public school teachers with much-needed resources for their classrooms; or curepsp.org, which provides care, support and research for those with PSP or other prime of life neurodegenerative diseases and their caregivers.
