WASHINGTON (SBG) — Love it or hate it, cranberry sauce is generally regarded as a holiday staple.

The side dish most often served with turkey, stuffing and everything in between comes in unique packaging though.

Maybe feast lovers have noticed – maybe not – but the gelatinous substance well known for being manufactured by Ocean Spray comes labeled upside down.

But ... why?

According to the cranberry company, the mixup isn't a mixup at all — they do it on purpose so consumers store the cans with the side you open facing down on the shelf.

Regardless of what's inside, when the contents of a can settle, an air bubble forms at the top. Ocean Spray said applying the label upside down means customers will flip the can so the label is correct for storage. When it's time to open it, the pop tab is at the bottom of the label. You open it, slide a knife along the edge (this breaks the vacuum seal) and out plops a perfectly intact cranberry log.

Ocean Spray advises if customers aren't storing their cans this way, it's time to make the switch.

Now you have an interesting piece of Thanksgiving trivia to share at the dinner table.
