fadedgenes
Curiosity and speculation on the whereabouts of Edgemont Park has been discussed on the Photo thread and I just thought I would add this information. The obituary of one of our ancestors, published in the Falls Creek Times newspaper 2/28/1908, stated that he died at the home of his brother-in-law, William Collins, of Edgemont Park. His sister lived on Taylor Ave. in Falls Creek. I found William Collins listed in the 1910 Cencus on Hill Road, DuBois, employed by the railroad. I am thinking this might now be Larkeytown Road because people by the name of Larkey lived in the area. Then in 1920 he is listed on Tannery Road. Anyone know the history of that area? tlakergirl
http://thepostcardattic.com/ProductImages.aspx?ProductId=1806472 I don't know how to post the picture but this is a link I found. The title is Sandy Creek Edgemont Park DuBois PA post card. I would like more information too. There are other postcards out there, one with train tracks nearby. Anyone else know more? Possum
So does anyone know why this was done? I think it was for the flood control project on the Sandy Lick that they bulldozed it.
Guest Tracy96
I found some great stuff online. I am posting the links because I have to go to work and don't have time to resize all the pics. The last link is a google image search that has lots of old pics. This park looks like it was beautiful! It's a shame it's gone now. http://www.duboispostcardhistory.com/pictures/72.html http://thepostcardattic.com/Sandy-Creek-Edgemont-Park-Dubois-PA-Postcard-P1806472.aspx http://www.ebay.com/itm/DuBois-PA-A-Scene-on-The-Lake-at-Edgemont-Park-Undivided-Back-/190629943385 http://duboishs.com/index.php/dubois-history/ https://www.google.com/search?q=edgemont+park+dubois+pa&hl=en&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=pwAAUcWWFI3g8AT8vYAg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAA&biw=1440&bih=
tl1975
Wow, I didn't realize ebay had so many things for DuBois.
Marine4
edgemont park was demolished partialy as a result of the DuBois flood and the remaider was excavated as part of the Army corps of engineers flood control project. The park was the first electric theme park in Pennsylvania and was noted as one of the premeire parks in the east coast. The DuBois traction company ran a trolly with stops in Falls creek station, Sykesville, as well as stops at both edgemont park and hand park. The bandstand was a large attraction for both company picnics as well as local entertainment and dances. Some believe that the entire park was located as previously mentioned but pictures have shown that it did not. some features of the park were infact on the right side of larkeytown bridge, but a larger portion to include bike paths, pavilions, small rides and boat launches were locatel elsewhere. The parks history is fading as did the park itself and the locating of people who attended the park has proven difficult.
Petee
Could the Courier run an article on the park and ask for people who went there to provide information?
Cardinal Fan
That's a good idea Petee. There are so many treasures in this area the Courier could cover.
claugh
I have a memory of small cabins being located where the Clarion Hotel is now. Would those have been part of Edgemont or was that something totally different?
Petee
How about someone here with some historical knowledge and writing ability contacting the Courier about a weekly local history article where people can respond. If it was free for the Courier they might do it. No extra cost, more local interest for readers.
mel
http://www.duboispostcardhistory.com/pictures/72.html Take notice where tracks are located! The location of this picture was taken is coming from DuBois drive across the bridge heading towards FallsCreek as soon as you cross the 1st set of tracks make a right towards the railroad station & Fort worth pipe about 100 yards after right is location of where photo was taken looking back towards the bridge! That's a lot of railroad tracks. I didn't count them before. I think that could be the key to solve the location.
crazycat
I have never seen some of those images of Edgemont Park on the websites listed how cool to know this was a very bigtime amusement park back in the day. There was also a place called Electric Park where DRMC stands now right beside the Rumbarger Cemetary, I would also love to find out some info and see pics on that park too if we can locate any, being right by the cemetary you'd think there would be some type of backgrond photos taken with some views of this park. The hospital bought the land from the park to build so there must be a record of it right?? Back to Edgemont, I remember back early 60's the area where the hotel sits having a trailer court up on top my grandparents lived there when I was very young. I also agree that it was right around where the tie plant sits now, that this great park once stood. It looks to have been pretty good size area according to all the pics.
