Bernell J. Schaffer, age 91 of DuBois, PA passed away Friday, December 13, 2024 at Christ the King Manor.


Born on July 6, 1933 in Luthersburg, PA at his home, he was the son of the late Carl and Alda (Marshall) Schaffer.


On July 16, 1955 he married the love of his life, Barbara A. (Showers) Schaffer. She preceded him in death on March 18, 2015.


Bernell was a veteran of the United States Army having served during Korean War. He was recognized as being one of the oldest living veterans at the DuBois Village.


He was an equipment operator for both Thomas Coal Company and Sky Haven Coal Company for many years. After retirement, he enjoyed working for his son at Ken Schaffer Excavating. Bernell was a very hard and dedicated worker.  In the eighth grade, he quit school to help his family financially when his father passed away at an early age.


Bernell was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church.


Family was the most important thing to Burnell, and his prize possession were his children. He is survived by 5 children (Brenda Edwards and her husband Timothy, Kenneth Schaffer, Andrew Schaffer and his wife Nancy, Steven Schaffer and his wife Karen, and Timothy Schaffer and his wife Angela, all of DuBois, PA), 11 grandchildren (Bill, Haley, Kenny, Lyle, Emilee, Kylee, Erin, Ryan, Shelina, Shawn, and Aaron T), numerous great grandchildren, 5 brothers, and 2 sisters.


He was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 4 sisters.


There will be no visitation 


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 10 a.m. from Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Parish at St. Catherine of Siena with Fr. John Malthaner and Msgr. Richard Siefer con celebrants.


Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery.


Memorial donation may be made to Christ the King Manor, 1100 West Long Ave., DuBois, PA 15801, and/or the Alzheimer's Association
