Daniel Smrekar, age 78 of Brookville, PA died Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Shippenville Healthcare and Rehabilitation. 


Born on August 12, 1946 in Kane, PA,  he was the son of the late Joseph and Clara (Dietz) Smrekar.


Dan was a graduate of Kane High School and attended Gannon University.


On September 13, 1975 he married his wife of 49 years, Jocelynn L. (Hartzell) Smrekar. She survives. 


Dan retired from the DuBois Courier Express as a reporter and columnist after over 20 years of service. He covered the outdoors, local news and sports and was well known for his column “ Painless Reading”


He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church where he was a lector. Dan was also a member of the Toby Creek Watershed Association. Dan was a youth soccer coach and referee, and enjoyed hunting, hiking, and camping with his friends and family. Above all, he loved to fly fish  in the Pennsylvania wilderness.


Dan is survived by one son (Toby Smrekar and his wife Michelle of Dunedin, New Zealand) two daughters (Briana Smrekar of Davis, WV and  Brookville, PA and Molly Jill Smrekar and son-in-law John Brundege,  and his three grandchildren, Jillian, Kasey and Wesley Owen Brundege all of Brookville, PA).


He was preceded in death by one brother (Roy Smrekar).


Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 4 to 7 PM at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 17, 2025 at 10 AM from Holy Spirit Parish at St. Michael the Archangel with Father John Malthaner as celebrant. 


Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery in Corsica, PA.


Memorial donations may be made to any environmental conservation organization of the donor’s choice.
