Polo Posted June 24 Share Posted June 24 The thing that bothered me when my kids were in school was that all year long they prepared for the PSSA tests. And some of the good common sense classes that prepared the kids for the real world and classes in music and the arts had to be overlooked somewhat. I hope that by now that has been remedied. Education is to be there to produce a well rounded person and to expose the kids to various fields so that they eventually find their niche. Each child is unique. I also don't care for some of the more current things that they are making the educators do. I won't mention those. If you don’t like it, move to a state that aligns with your views. The federal government has no business telling a woman she can or cant have an abortion. Again, let each state decide how to govern. And if you don’t like the choices that state makes. Move to one that aligns with your views. the Feds have too much control over us and it has to stop. That was never the purpose our founding fathers had. and Trump knows all of this. And that’s what he’s been trying to do! And I really hope it continues and stuff like this doesn’t get hung up in court battles. the department of education has got to go! I was crushed when I was in school and the metal shopped closed! Shop classes were the only thing I found interest in. I wasn’t and I’m still not a book person. I need to work with my hands. We were told well if you want to take those classes, go to Jeff tech… kids really do need shop classes and music/art classes.. it’s time schools stop thinking all kids learn the same and want to learn the same things.. options are a necessity. you mentioned pssa testing.. let’s not even get into how stupid those standardized tests are. Tell a kid to take a test that has no effect on their grades… what do you thinks going to happen… I guarantee the results those tests give are not accurate. It would be nice to see, at least a few, of those in charge act like decent human beings. We have hundreds of these people controlling our daily lives. If your job approval rating is way less than 50% you are a failure at your job. You are a liability not a asset. Perks have now become expensive. To a great extent, I agree with standardized testing, both on a state and national levels. You have to have some way to measure and compare education systems across our country. I cant you how many kids I've known who ripped through high with all As, but discovered quickly they were well behind a majority of their college classmates, especially if the went to bigger universities that attracted students from all over the country. On a personal note, although I thought most of high was fairly easy, our math classes were brutal. I was happy with Cs and the rare B, with the occasional D or F tossed in. Due to those grades, I thought my desired field of study would be a no go. However, standardized testing always put me in the high 90th percentiles. College placement testing put me in the top 5% of my college class, which allowed me skip almost all of the required maths. Fortunately, I had a few teachers, including the math advisor, encourage me to follow my goals. Without the standardized testing, I probably would have selected a different career path. Of note, I also tested out of all freshman English classes, so maybe those 'easy As were earned. The bottom line is high school grades mean very little. Your As may not compare favorably to the B student who had student who had more rigorous high school courses. Ulimately, for kids that move from the area, their competition for college and jobs is national. As a parent, I needed to know how my kid's education compared to others across the state and country, not just to local schools. If my kid was acing every high school class but was scoring 'average' on standardized tests, I considered that a problem. Now, stardardized tests could be made optional for students. Why waste time for kids who are not interested and will blow it off anyway. Serious students are going to take those tests as serious as any other.
