OK, who has the info on how to proceed here?

When I worked for Penn State, they downloaded Windows 10 to my home computer because they did not have a laptop available for me.  After that, I downloaded a free Home version to my home computer.   When I quit, they removed not only their laptop information but they also deleted my own Windows 11 from my own home computer which I continue to use to this day.  However, now I am running into the consequences.

It says my computer does meet the equipment standards for Windows 11 although I had it before.  A new computer is $400 to $900 but I have no need for gaming level junk.

Randy Scott always took care of updating and repairing my computer to mega standards because I used them, but he had rare skills because he had been a trained factory computer repair tech.  Sadly he died during the Covid idiocy.  I laugh now at the memory of him building beyond the then currently normal standards.  Quote, "even you will never exceed the need for what this fix will do!"  I proved him wrong a couple of times, but not always.

Now, should I just bite the bullet and buy a new system, get my computer brought up to their standards or just continue to use this version till there's an unfixable problem?

What about the personal data that I have on here?

Help???

You said you were associated with Penn State?  Could you at least contact their help desk in the computer department and ask your questions?  They could steer you in the right direction, I'm sure.  You could also contact Carlson Technologies.  They are very knowledgeable and could perhaps assist for a fee, of course, but it may be a lot less than purchasing a new device.  Just a thought.

I did tell Penn State but they couldn't find out what happened to my own Windows 11.  Sometimes you would call there and the person you speak to was a genius, and sometimes they were as confused as I was.  particularly when it wasn't a name I knew so I assumed they were filling in for someone else.

I have not worked there for a couple of years, and truthfully I never thought of it again till now.  They were very good to me, but another person ruined the experience and I absolutely loved the job.  I can't deal with that again.  Two nights of the ER and over a year of recuperation are something I don't want to even remember.  I'd rather buy another computer and program.

Even with the cost.. sometimes it’s just the best option to get to new updated set up…

im about to be in the same situation.. tired of fixing and updating my old system and about to bite the bullet and get a new one!

What is changing is that Microsoft will no longer offer support for earlier versions.  Computers will still operate, but there is no need to scrap what you have or rush to an update.  Remember all the "Chicken Little(s)" back when Y2K was the rage?  The world didn't stop, computers still worked and Bill Gates didn't earn mega-billions, just billions.

My main concern is that I absolutely cannot lose my material on this computer.  I should probably start removing it as I create it onto a back up hard drive, but will that transfer over to a new computer for Windows 11?

I have portable hard drives I use to back stuff up. Only problem is that they have both crashed and I can’t access them anymore.. anyone have any tricks for that problem?

I have that same problem.  I've saved things for years only to find that when I need to access it, it's dead!

I would seriously look at two backup methods (use both).  First is a top-quality thumb drive and second is a portable hard drive.

Excellent advice.  I do the same.

If I get the new computer, and slowly move my data to it, will it all be compatible?

From what I have been told by our IT provider, yes.  Please bear in mind, our computers are no earlier than Windows 10.

I would suggest that you go to BMP on Maple Ave. Jeff will give you options. Last year my PC crashed and he recovered my files and transferred them to a new PC with Windows 11. A word of caution Windows 11 isn't user friendly as 10 was at first.  Good luck!

I don't think I have a choice.  I'm 77, have been using a computer since it was code and dot matrix, and have gotten through all of the changes through the years.  I can't say I didn't say some nasty things while doing it and foundered around till I fell into an answer, but now I have no choice other than to just give up and stop researching and doing community service work.

OK Steve, you recommended a really great deal and machine when I needed a laptop.  Got any clues for me?
