Sorry, but some of us have seen "whatever" up pretty close. We didn't fall for anything but we would be liars if we denied what we saw.

God made us the keepers of the earth and it's creatures, to use, to nurture and to protect. Youcan help your friend in a way that we humans can't be helped. You can provide an end to his pain and gave him back to God. Most animals don't get that kind of love. They are made to suffer horribly.

We miss our Zeke who passed away last winter from Lymphoma. I still check the dark hallway when I leave a room because he was always there in the dark waiting for me and I fell over him frequently, but what a life we had together! One of my best memories of him was a good spell he had before he got too bad to go outside by himself. He had such long flowing fur. He had gone to the woods behind the house and came meandering back up through the yard, fur flying in the breeze, a smile on his face looking up to the sun, so pleased with his life. Now he gets to do it every day of the rest of existence. How could I deny that to him when he was in pain, lying at the top of the stairs waiting for me, too weak to climb them any more?

You will know when your pet is not going to enjoy another day when they stop smiling.

Bring them in at night is always a good idea because only varmints are going to be after them after dark. Once they find it they will haunt the area till they can get it again.

Bluebirds require lots of open field type area. It would be extremely rare to find them in town. They don't even want to live close together.

Now is the time to remove any tomatoes or blossoms from your plants that will not have time to develop and ripen. You can trim off the tip of the plant to force it to ripen fruit that is almost ready.

With all of the rain this year it has washed a lot of nutrients out of the soil regularly so be sure to fertilize with TOMATO food (I use Espoma Tomato Tone) and Epsom Salts.  Some Worm Wonder (Hanzeleys or Alvetros) will pep them up in a few days but it's a general greening plant food, not fruit support.  Did you do a Penn State Soil Test?  You could do one now and it might solve the lack of tomatoes problem.  If something is obviously low then you might correct it quickly and get more tomatoes if we don't get an early frost.

Did you have lots of blossoms?  Unless you had no bees then you should be getting tomatoes. Did all of your blossoms develop into tomatoes?  With so much rain this year it was difficult for them to even get out to the plants to do a good job.  If you didn't get blossoms clusters then that's a totally different problem, either the variety or fertilization.

Tall stringy plants usually result from lack of sunlight hours or too much nitrogen which is what you would find in blue Miracle Grow General Plant Food.  They do sell a tomato food but I've not had such good luck with it either.

The plant without leaves may have had Early Blight which would cause the bottom leaves to yellow and drop, then work it's way up the plant, but the tomatoes would still ripen.  They would not be as nice, but they would turn red.

If your tomatoes produced and stopped then you probably bought Determinate tomatoes which are designed to do that.  They are generally used for canning because they produce a lot at one time.  Indeterminate tomatoes will ripen week by week till they freeze or run out of sunlight.

Get that Penn State soil test done.  It pays off big time.  If you have other problems with gardening, then call a Master Gardener who will research and find answers to correct your problems.  849-7361

Does everyone realize that wars and wealth revolve around the control of food?  Monsanto will soon control the world's wealth if they are not stopped.

Don't let a flowering plant set seed unless you want it to spread.  If it's a bulb then snip off just the flower and it's stem.  Once the leaves are dead then chop to the ground.  The leaves are still providing food to the bulb as long as they are green.  It's actually getting the bulb "fat" and ready to flower next year.  You only braid or bundle leaves if you're bored and want to imtimidate the neighbors. :-)

Once a seedling gets its second set of leaves it should be transplanted to a container large enough to keep it from becoming root bound till it can be planted out after May 31.  You can try planting out before that but unless you want to cover nightly and uncover before the sun roasts it alive under the covering then you should wait.  Plants such as tomatoes and peppers aren't going to grow properly till the soil warms sufficiently anyway and cool weather early in the plant's formation can inhibit the amount and quality of fruit they will develop later in the season.

Till then transplant up to a larger container like a styrofoam cup or a throw away container using some sort of potting mix.  Fertilize with 1/4 to 1/2 strength tomato food till they go into the ground.  Regular Miracle Grow is not meant for fruiting plants, it's meant for developing leaves.

Root bound plants are in trouble before they even hit the garden because they get stressed, it damages their immune systems and they go into shock which stops them temporarily from growing.  Grow a healthy root system and the plant will do the rest.
