  1. When out sweeping anti-skid from the yard after work I noticed my tulips poking out about 1"...and there are 60's in the forecast next week I seen on channel 6 news tonight...ABOUT TIME!!!
  2. When I was a kid Merritt Edner's was right across the street from where Frank's is. The building they were in is right beside the road that goes along the tracks back to now, Giant Eagle. I remember going there with my Dad to get his tax return done.
  3. Found this about the DuBois Brewery searching for something else...very interesting. The Brewery There seems to be some debate as to exactly when Frank Hahne came to DuBois and broke ground on his own facility. One source claims 1898, another 1897. It seems most likely that this occurred between April and the end of 1896. It was on April 16, 1896, that the DuBois Weekly Courier reported: "Some new developments in connection with the brewery may be looked for in the near future." There were a number of reasons Hahne chose the DuBois site for his facility, but the most frequently cited was the excellence of the water supply. He purchased 2300 acres surrounding the local reservoir to protect the watershed from pollution. By 1906, the brewery had four products on the market: DuBois Wurzburger, Hahne's Export Pilsener, DuBois Porter and DuBois Budweiser. The Budweiser name would be at the center of controversy for 60 years between DuBois Brewing and Anheuser-Busch. The DuBois brands soon traveled far and wide for a brewery of its size; ranging up to 150 miles away and selling well in Buffalo, Erie and Pittsburgh. The brewery's 300 barrel kettle was kept busy churning out brands, while the left-over grain materials were pressed and sold for cattle feed and grist mills in the rural areas surrounding DuBois. As with many other American breweries, DuBois Brewing moved right along until 1918 and the advent of Prohibition. The brewery shifted production to "near beer", soft drinks and opened H&G Ice Company. The ice house still stands and shows the significant date of 1919. According to the April 7, 1933 DuBois Courier the brewery won the honor of being one of only two breweries in the entire nation that had never violated or been suspected of violating the Prohibition laws since the 18th amendment became effective. As a result, DuBois Brewing Company was issued license number G-2 allowing them to resume brewing immediately on Repeal. Other breweries had to wait varying periods as a form of punishment. On the first day of beer production, DuBois products sold at between 10 and 15 cents per pint bottle. A glass at local taverns was 10 cents. Frank Hahne died in 1932 and the brewery was passed to his son Frank Jr. Frank Jr. was the only son. He had a son who died in infancy denying the family an heir. The tragedy of this was not realized until 1967. Frank Hahne Jr. sold the brewery to Pittsburgh Brewing in 1967. The new owners of the Budweiser name reportedly "settled" with Anheuser-Busch to the tune of a $1 million dollar profit for Pittsburgh Brewing. Five years later, in May of 1972, the brewery was closed forever, leaving 100 workers out of a job. http://www.worldlingo.com/ma/enwiki/en/DuBois,_Pennsylvania
  4. I have 2 plants like always. My neighbor gave them to me from ones he planted from seed...same as last year, but they got the dreaded disease last year and I didn't get one good tomatoe. I've had some yellowed leaves and stems on the lower part of the plant which then died, but no black spots yet. I picked the first red one tonight...after 2 BLT's, it's gone! DELICIOUS!!!...I hope there is more.
  5. They are widening that intersection at Main Street and increasing the turn radius...A LOT!!! They were working on it before the tree came down and the hole in front of the tree may have weakened the root structure and contributed to it coming down...IMO. I took these on the way home from work today with my cellphone. You can see the new curb and where the cones are is where the curb is/was. You can also see the hole in the fence from the tree in the 1st one.
  6. Couldn't leave my aunts house without a "poke" of candy.
  7. True, and I forgot about that too. ...'Christmas Cactus Memories'...
  8. TY, she was the best Mother anyone could wish for and lived a good long life...she's better off than any of us here. I knew it was 2 days after Christmas, but didn't realize that today was the 27th...was no need to look at the calendar the last few days not being at work.
  9. We had one of those that my wife got from her grandmother...damn thing bloomed in July, but very seldom if ever at Christmas. It died years ago. (never took it outside, maybe that was the problem) :-/ I'm not much of a green thumb, but I do have some hanging plant in the living room that came from her grandmothers funeral (19 years ago), a long stemmed thingy with leaves that came from my Mom's funeral (6 yrs ago today), a spider plant that has been restarted many times from its offspring, and a plant from Canada that grows huge red flowers from an approx. 3 1/2" round bulb. I've "killed" them all several times from neglect, but they keep coming back. ..."My Mom's funeral (6 yrs ago today)"...never realized it was today until I went to look it up in the Bible. :B
  10. PAnurse, it was the Baptist Church before it was the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. Don't you remember the old B & W photo that was posted on the bulletin board of the church when it was the Baptist Church and Main Street was DIRT out front?
  11. From today...Pete's old gas station coming down.
  12. Me too, South Ave and Hubert Street schools...62-68. Holy CRAP, that was a LONG time ago!
  13. Larson's was down on Long Ave. close to Jared Street in the area where E & G Auto Parts was last before they closed. I was a paper carrier then in 10th grade and kept the special edition of the paper. I don't know if I have it anymore or if it was still at my Mom's house when she died...maybe Denny can look it up in the archives.
  14. If you have a scanner, you can scan them and save them to a folder on your computer, then post them from there.
  15. Remember it well...Agnes came up over PA and stalled out...and it rained, and rained, and rained for days! I was 16 and had a paper route...I'm sure I saved a paper but have no idea where it is now. My brother worked at PT...I started there 2 years later...and I remember the City Police going into the store in rowboats to get all the guns out of Sporting Goods. While they were in there, they shot several rats floating around on debris, some as big as cats I've been told! The water was about 3 feet deep inside the store. I remember the Army Reserve, which I think was stationed in DuBois at the time, driving duce and half trucks across the boulevard and a front end loader carrying stuff in the bucket, sometimes people.
  16. Same here, my 2 plants that the neighbor gave me that he grew from seed were doing awesome, staked them up and had lots of nice tomatoes that I was waiting to turn red. That was 3 days ago, as of yesterday the plants are 1/2 to 3/4 dead, tomatoes have big black spots all over them. I picked 3 that looked ok and scrubed them and put them in a brown paper bag to ripen...was so looking for some home grown tomatoes for BLT's and sammies. Just checked the ones in the bag...2 of them have big dark spots...tossed them with some cat litter. :cry2:
  17. I don't care, I cut whole stems off at the ground to keep the width smaller and I topped it off before it flowered, but I won't now that it has. I always cut it to the ground every fall and it comes back fine...at least it has every year so far. :-/ We got ours at Lowe's.
  18. Yah, if you have a problem with bees being around, you definetly don't want one of them. Mine has bumble bees swarming at it all the time...made it hard to trim it up the other day.
  19. I've got one of those in my 1 foot wide, porch length flower box. The wife got it when the mini Japanese spruce we had there outgrew the spot. I topped it and cut some side stems off this year because it goes nuts and had to steak it up before. When the rain soaks it, it lays down all over...probably not a good spot for it, but it will stay there until it dies. I see from the pic I'm gonna have to cut some side shoots again...it trys to spread, but I won't let it. ;D Just took the pic with my cellphone and guess what...it's raining AGAIN! >
  20. Have them here...digging in everything this year. My neighbor has been trapping them and relocating them...to Treasure Lake...JK. Last I talked to him, I think he was up to 12 or 13 so far.
  21. My neighbor gave me my 2 plants that he grew from seed and I don't really know much about the different breeds. I noticed I have some blossoms on them today and all I know is I want a good tasting homegrown tomatoe NOW! ;D
  22. Frost?...When?...lowest low I see in the 10 day forecast is 36
  23. Are you old enough to remember the brewery in operation? I know you lived a block away from it as I did ...I have many memories of going down there and watching it in action...unloading grain cars, watching keg filling and hammering in the bungs, the bottling works, and many more memories from there. Do you remember the old B & O car shops that were located under the Sandy bridge (where Aspin Way is now) along Brady Street? For those that don't know, at one time there were 2 B & O car shops in DuBois, the one where Rescar is now and this one.
