some history of the JE DuBois Lumber camp photo: The camp was in Hicks Run. circa 1907. Man in the front is Woody Kelly. He was responsible for the camp. Lumber was cut and sent down stream to the mill in DuBois. The camp had modern facilities - hot/cold water, bathroom and sewage. Woody Kelly is also know as the first game commissioner in the area. The bear in the photo is drinking a beer and was the camp mascot. Woody Kelly was my husband's great grandfather and the women in the far back of the photos were his great (or great great) aunts and cooked for the workers.

If I saw something like that it would end up being a lot flatter.... hate spiders.

I feel much better about having a lousy garden this year. It was our first year in a long time for one. Peas - one serving out of 4 rows. Beans - 3 servings out of 4 rows. Tomotoes were blighted. Lettuce - nothing. Biggest head of broccoli - 4". Squash have plenty of flowers - no fruit. Cucumbers on the other hand are going crazy. I'm going to test the soil to be sure as well as cut down a couple of the trees that gave us too much shade. ... and hit the farmers market.

Years ago there was a story of a gun being dumped in the Shawnee pond.

Thanks. I'll try to be patient. I have stringers for them to climb on. I'll hold off fertilizing any more.

This is my first year in a long time for a garden so can't remember some things. I planted two double rows of peas in mid May. The plants are growing great but no blooms (hence no peas coming). They're in a semi sunny spot, I've fertilized twice. Any ideas why not or am I just impatient?

may have found homes for by "babies". I just can't bring myself to throw them away so glad they can find new homes. They're both atleast 15 years old. As far as cold for either one - they were in a chilly but never below freezing temp room in the winter. Thanks.

Does anyone know when the Amish Greenhouse in Troutville opens for the season?

The cuttings are well rooted now. Can't wait for spring to get them back outside.

I've finally identified the plant (I think I bought it at the plant sale this spring at BMP and lost the tag..) and see that they are a perennial and I can propagate with cuttings. I am planning to do this but will the ones I planted in an big outside planter die or will they come back next year?

my son got tired of fighting the groundhogs ( he watched them climb over a 3 foot fence! ) and gave up on his garden last year. there were some well established asparagus plants - even after roto tilling and planting grass he still has to mow over asparagus stubs.

but watch out for slugs. they eat my marigolds down to the stem.

My daffodils and narcissus have buds on them and tulips are leaves only. With the weather forcast for the next couple nights (15-25 and possible snow - yuk!) in DuBois would it be recommended to cover? Would that even help?

The canna I have was the free bulb from the plant sale earlier this year (at BMP). Was this from the library/embankment? I didn't get it in the ground til mid summer so didn't get anything more than a couple leaves. I think I'll just dig it up next month and try again next year.

Has anyone ever tried to dig up a canna lily and pot it as an indoor houseplant?

is it too early to plant spring bulbs? ie. tulips, daffodils, etc. (dubois area)

my black eyed susans are just gorgeous this year. am waiting till they're done blooming then separate a few - already have a couple friends who want some or i'd offer.

a very generous friend gave us 3 clumps of zebra grass this spring. it's growing like crazy. our pampas grass now has an empty center thanks to some ants. guess they figured it was a nice cozy safe place that we wouldn't find until fall. >

the recommended spacing for green beans is 6" apart. what would happen if you don't thin? would it hurt to not thin to that? we planted the seed about every 3" and they ALL came up! i hate to pull healthy plants out but don't want to end up getting fewer (or no) beans if they're too close. any advice?
