As a form of reparations, the state decided to give licenses to sell pot almost exclusively to people who had been previously convicted of marijuana offenses. Let’s set aside the insanity of rewarding criminal behavior in such a way and focus on the fact it was only last month that the first 36 licenses were granted. Thirty-six. It is unprecedented for a lame-duck Congress to jam through an omnibus spending bill after the American people voted out the majority party in the House of Representatives. However, Senate Republican leadership has worked with outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for one last liberal spending blowout before the conservative majority takes control of the House on Jan. 3. Solar Panel Cost By State Ad Solar-Estimate.org The omnibus spending bill is loaded with thousands of earmarks, which are line-item funding for specific pet projects directed by members of Congress. Many of these earmarks would advance the Left’s extreme agenda and fund its institutions using the taxpayer’s money. House Appropriations Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., bragged that the omnibus “fulfills 98% of Democratic member requests in the House, with $5.4 billion for 3,213 Democratic projects.” The types of woke-waste line items that some Senate Republicans will help fund, unless they change their minds, include these 12 projects: $1.2 million for “LGBTQIA+ Pride Centers” and another $1.2 million for “support services for DACA recipients” (aka helping illegal aliens with taxpayer funds) at San Diego Community College. $477,000 for the Equity Institute in Rhode Island to indoctrinate teachers with “antiracism virtual labs.” $1 million for Zora’s House in Ohio, a “coworking and community space” for “women and gender-expansive people of color.” $3 million for the American LGBTQ+ Museum in New York City. $3.6 million for a Michelle Obama Trail in Georgia. $750,000 for “LGBT and Gender Non-Conforming housing” in Albany, New York. $2 million for the “Great Blacks in Wax” museum in Baltimore. $856,000 for an “LGBT Center” in New York. $750,000 for the “TransLatin@ Coalition” to provide “workforce development programs and supportive services for Transgender and Gender nonconforming and Intersex (TGI) immigrant women in Los Angeles.” $2 million for “MLK Labor” in Washington, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO that expelled Seattle police officers from union ranks. $956,000 for “The Equity Incubator at the Universities at Shady Grove” in Maryland. $791,200 for “equitable energy resilience and EV infrastructure” in Sonoma, California. But the GOP agreed to keep the pork money flowing with a 158-52 vote in November. Rather than rubber-stamping these earmarks and the $1.85 trillion omnibus, lawmakers should kick government spending into next year. POLITICS Published December 20, 2022 7:53pm EST Five eye-popping spending items in the $1.7 trillion omnibus bill The bill contains $858 billion in defense spending and $772.5 billion in non-defense discretionary spending The release of the bill, which spans 4,155 pages, comes after negotiations between Senate Republicans and House and Senate Democrats. To stave off some government funding running out, lawmakers have until the end of the week to pass the proposed legislation. One provision in the bill states that "not less than" $575 million "should be made available for family planning/reproductive health, including in areas where population growth threatens biodiversity or endangered species." In another section, the behemoth bill requires $410 million to "remain available" to reimburse Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia and Oman for "enhanced border security." At least $150 million of that must go to Jordan, according to the bill. Meanwhile, the bill allocates $1.56 billion to Customs and Border Protection for "border management requirements" and $339.6 million to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for "non-detention border management requirements," funds that are prohibited from being used to "acquire, maintain, or extend border security technology and capabilities" unless they’re for improving processing. About $3 million goes toward the Pollinator-Friendly Practices on Roadsides and Highway Rights-of-Way Program, according to the bill. That program provides grants to state departments of transportation, Native American tribes and federal land management agencies for "activities to benefit pollinators on roadsides and highway rights-of-ways" like planting certain types of fauna or implementing certain mowing strategies. One earmark included in the spending bill asks for $3.6 million for a project called "Michelle Obama Trail – PATH Trail Project" in Georgia. Morality suggests we stop having them." Another headline from the Guardian that year declared that the answer to saving the planet was simple: "Want to save the planet? Have fewer children." Or as one New York Times writer asked in 2021: "To Breed or Not to Breed?" A climate reporter posed a similar question to parents and parents-in-waiting in a Washington Post analysis piece this month: "Should you not have kids because of climate change? It’s complicated." As the Trump administration went about weakening vehicle fuel economy standards earlier this year, the climatologist John Christy made his own calculations of how the change would affect Earth’s climate. His conclusion: Not at all. In an analysis he put together for the Environmental Protection Agency’s elite board of outside science advisors, of which he was a member, Christy argued that Earth’s climate simply wasn’t that sensitive to changes in carbon dioxide. So neither the weakened federal standards, nor California’s tougher standards, which the Administration repealed as part of its rollback, would make any difference. “My analysis showed that it doesn’t make a difference which rule you pick,” Christy, a professor and interim dean of the College of Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, said in an interview. “You can have the California rule for the whole country or California accept the rest of the country’s rule and the amount of carbon emissions are so tiny relative to the world, it’s not going to make a difference in whatever the climate is going to do.” It’s an assertion that flies in the face of mainstream science. But it is right in line with the argument that Christy has been making for 30 years, drawing on his pioneering—but hotly disputed—work on satellite temperature readings. He has argued before Congress and elsewhere that the Earth is not heating as quickly as climate models predict, and that society should not make the costly decision to curb fossil fuel consumption based on what he often describes as the “murky” science of climate change.

One factor that is contributing to the relatively low labor force participation rate is the combination of unemployment benefits and recently expanded Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, according a new study by the nonprofit Committee to Unleash Prosperity. In 14 states, unemployment benefits and ACA subsidies for a family of four with two people not working amounts to an annualized equivalent of $80,000 a year in wages and benefits, the study found. Those benefits come out to over $100,000 in three states – Washington, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. "A key policy question these days that has befuddled federal lawmakers is why so many millions of Americans have not returned to the workplace in the post-Covid era. The U.S. is ‘missing’ more than three million workers of working age that could be working and were working prior to Covid but are not today," University of Chicago economics professor Casey Mulligan and Heritage Foundation research fellow EJ Antoni wrote in the study. "This study shows that one factor contributing to the dearth of workers is the generous benefits paid to families without workers." The Inflation Reduction Act, which the Biden administration helped usher through Congress earlier this year, extended subsidies from the American Rescue Plan until 2025. EDUCATION Published December 20, 2022 1:15am EST Stanford releases guide to eliminate 'harmful language,' cautions against calling US citizens 'American' Stanford's index says its goal is to eliminate 'many forms of harmful language' Stanford University published an index of "harmful language" it plans to eliminate from the school’s websites and computer code, offering terms to be used as replacements. The Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative, which was revealed in May, is a "multi-phase, multi-year project to address harmful language in IT at Stanford," according to the guide. The guide says its goal is to eliminate "many forms of harmful language," including "racist, violent, and biased (e.g., disability bias, ethnic bias, ethnic slurs, gender bias, implicit bias, sexual bias) language" in Stanford websites and code. It added that it strives to educate people on the impact of words. There are 10 "harmful language" sections outlined in the index: ableist, ageism, colonialism, culturally appropriative, gender-based, imprecise language, institutionalized racism, person-first, violent and additional considerations. Among the words the university urges people to avoid in the imprecise language section is the term, "American." People are instead asked to use "U.S. Citizen" because "American" typically refers to "people from the United States only, thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country in the Americas." The Americas, the index notes, comprises 42 countries. Other terms deemed harmful in this section include "abort," which offers the replacement of "cancel" or "end," because of moral concerns about abortion; "child prostitute" is replaced with a "child who has been trafficked," so the person is not defined by just one characteristic; and "Karen" is replaced with "demanding or entitled White woman." Under the ableist section, the index urges people to use "accessible parking" instead of "handicap parking," "died by suicide" instead of "committed suicide" and "anonymous review" instead of "blind review." It also says people should use "unenlightened" as a replacement for "tone deaf," and a "person with a substance abuse disorder" as a replacement for "addict." "It's going to take a long time to fully see what's happening," said Hannah Studer, deputy director of the behavioral health nonprofit Bridges to Change. "We have to stay the course because this is life and death and this really is building an entirely new future for the state that the state deserves." Measure 110 passed with 58% of the vote in 2020. It decriminalized possession of personal use amounts of hard drugs including heroin, meth and fentanyl, and redirected a significant portion of the state's marijuana tax revenue — which had previously gone to schools, police and local governments — to fund grants for addiction services. But critics accuse the law of fueling addiction and crime in parts of the state, especially Portland, and the measure became a hot topic in this year's gubernatorial race. "It's worked out great for the drug dealers and the drug users because we have an open-air drug market," said David Potts, chair of the Lents Neighborhood Livability Association. Portland Police Association President Aaron Schmautz told Fox News in September that police don't want to see "mass incarceration as a result of low level drug use" and that treatment should be prioritized. "But you need some teeth to that," Schmautz said. "There needs to be a way to require that treatment." Drug possession is now a Class E violation, punishable by a maximum $100 fine, which people can have waived if they call a hotline and complete a treatment assessment. Oregon Health & Science University's head of addiction medicine, Dr. Todd Korthuis, said few people are calling the hotline, and most are only doing so to get their citation waived. "Only 1% of those issued a ticket for drug possession requested information about treatment resources," he told a state senate committee earlier this year. "In my discussions with treatment leaders around the state, not one has had any patient enroll in treatment due to these tickets." Of 3,645 citations issued through November, 68% ended in a conviction because the suspect failed to appear in court, according to the Oregon Judicial Department. Ron Williams, director of outreach for the Health Justice Recovery Alliance, which advocates for Measure 110, isn't concerned by the lack of participation and thinks people should be able to seek recovery services on their own terms. "There's very little evidence that coercive treatment works," Williams said. "Most people who use drugs recreationally don't think they have a problem and thus don't think they need treatment. So why would you force them into treatment?"
