  1. I thought I saw some Cro-magnons at the Post the other night. But then again, that was after being there for 4 or 5 hours.
  2. I had a complete set of Sam King maps, but gave them away to a friend. They are available at the Clearfield County Historical Society (don't know if our local society has them). They're reprints and show all kind of good stuff, like the cave. We have an original set at our camp.
  3. Would love to see some photos of stores/streets in that era.
  4. Just curious. I was born and raised in Sykesville and had some friends from Helvetia. Our youngest daughter plays in the girl's softball league, with the field located in "Stanley Bottom" which is a "suburb" of Helvetia!
  5. S-Mom, You're not a former Helvetia resident, are you? To
  6. What was the name of the small park located behind/near the old drive-in?
  7. Pre strip club???? In the 80s the Rhody used to get some dayam good bands there!
  8. Dayam!!!!! Ya'll got around! I also remember more than a few of those names, though I was nowhere old enough to bar hop then.
  9. All zombies smile. That's how they snag you!
  10. That pup looks like he's transforming into, gasp, a ZOMBIE!!!!!!!
  11. It was a "Victorian" style cemetery, in that decades ago, families would go there on Sundays and picnic.
  12. May I suggest consideration of using your dish washer? It cycles and dries in under 45 minutes.
  13. What's the limit on "unnatural" events?????
  14. You used to be able to access a trail immediately across 119 from Murray's Ford, which goes past the concrete pump house for the Sykesville water system. I believe WW Equipment sits on a portion of the trail now, but the trail will take you up to 322 a hundred yards or so behind Sheetz. There was also a pond along the trail and the entire area would be ripe for the new GoDuBois Metal Detector group.
  15. We were in Pittsburgh last night, so we missed it (it was a hockey night!). I would like to see a "lantern walk" when the snow is flying!
  16. How about some sort of "historical chronological trail" for DuBois? Something that could incorporate "The Wigwam", as well as "Rumbarger Cemetery", plus railroads (think of the "Greenway Rails to Trails project". The town already has a historical designation, why not do "mapping" of the area, such as what Sam King did years ago?
  17. I believe that may be the old Larkin building. I toured it last spring, in consideration of buying the site. That old building has some great bones and it would be a shame for it to wither away empty (it was not suitable for my business).
  18. Maybe the "reach" is too small! Maybe a comprehensive plan to restore the wall along Main Street and perhaps a restoration of the G.A.R. Circle to its original look? Because of the G.A.R. Circle, maybe having the cemetery designated a true "historical" spot? Look beyond the simple mowing and it may be easier to cut the grass. Might be far easier to raise funds.
  19. Thanks one and all! My stalks are now about 3' high and I was nearly ready to prune them back a bit yesterday to see if it would force more lower growth.
  20. Thanks, and I guess I better plant more mounds cause the four I did last year wouldn't give enough for one person!
  21. Last year, I planted several mounds of asparagus. I got long, tall stalks, with fern like leaves at the end. This year, I got the same thing, but some are green and some are purple. What am I doing wrong? Should the stalks have been cut when they first came out of the ground (at about 5" or 6") and eaten?
  22. First question, "What is the Elm Street Program"? Second, as the weather turns nicer, take a walk around Long Ave. and Scribner going up towards Highland Street, in the evening just as dusk is setting in. Even those houses that have been turned into rentals, will show their original forms very nicely. DuBois had some very nice homes and some really skilled builders decades ago. It is not too late, but the sun is setting quickly on saving many of these homes from irreparable damage.
  23. If possible, please post a synopsis of the minutes for those of us unable to attend tonight's meeting. Thanks! T.
  24. What are some of the near term plans?
  25. I agree with your comment about the sign! Funny how something like that changes the entire look. It would be nice to see a wrought iron fence replaced, however the wall is in such poor shape, that major reconstruction of it would need to take place first.
