I just returned home from a visit to Rumbarger Cemetery. Being Memorial Day, I wanted to visit the GAR Circle, and just take a walk around the grounds. To say the least, I am almost speechless at how at cemetery well within the city limits, could be left to deteriorate as much as it has! Particularly troubling are the number of veteran graves, from the Civil War through WWII (I didn't see any Viet Nam veterans, but that doesn't mean there may not be any) that need attention. Additionally, many of the names on the stones reflect well known personages from the beginning of DuBois, as well as names formerly unknown to me. I certainly respect and applaud the efforts a few volunteers have made to beautify the cemetery, but it will certainly take more than those volunteers. I know we've discussed this topic previously, but on Memorial Day, it seems fitting to see what can be done to actually start something. What say any of you? How can we get this started?

Not really. The easiest entry is from Washington (I believe that's the name). This will also give safer entry onto Main Street. Further, if you look at the property maps for the Brewery location, you will see widening the road will be problematic for some property owners, whereas the other street would not. Then again, this may just have been some of the "Block Grant" money that had to be spent and this looked like a good spot (again instead of fixing sidewalks in some of the areas of the city that are not so "prominent"). Come on Herm, you can better.

Is the theater the same as the "opera house" that is in a building McCabes owned?

But our city manager wants a city ordinance that no one cuts down a tree without replacing a tree. This tree came down because of the contractor's disturbing the soil, etc. around the root system, weakening the tree. This tree may have stood for another fifty years or more and I would like to see what the city will do to correct what their contractor caused.

Thanks for posting Rich! Personally I miss the "art" that was our coinage in years past: buffalo nickel, standing liberty quarters, mercury dimes, etc.

If anyone wants an enjoyable experience, this spring, when we have a warm evening, around dusk, take a walk through that part of DuBois. In the twilight, you will see how many homes are supposed to look. There are truly some very, very nice homes in this town and it is a shame so many are so run down.

I'll remember that this year--last couple of years it was just mushroom compost and peat moss. I have a fairly small vegetable garden--18' x 7' in a raised bed. I also have a spot behind a fence where I usually put the sunflowers and some squash plants. Then there is the spot for the strawberries and blueberries.

We'll be at the beach (Wilmington, NC area) early July, so maybe I'll just fill the roof top carrier up with pine needles and leave the rest of our stuff behind! Seriously, I think I'll just keep refining my present garden techniques, which basically is peat moss and mushroom compost. Probably safer for an amateur such as myself! Remember growing up when I had to rototill (hated that) and then my Dad would get a load of manure dumped on the garden and I had to spread that (hated that more). Swore I would never step foot in a garden again!

This sounds interesting! Last year, I used peat moss as a mulch around some of the plants and it worked well, except for the tomato plants that were blighted. I pulled those plants out late summer and covered the ground with black plastic to kill the remnants. Does anyone know where you can get pine needle mulch around here? Thanks!

How about a modern photo and perhaps directions to the house? Is the house inhabited now?

What is lasagna gardening?????? I've been a "newbie" for at least five years, and make mistakes every year! Start small and consider the size of the plant with regards to the space. I would also suggest planting some annual flowers (mums, etc.) around the perimeter to give you a bit of reward for your efforts quickly!

The issue still remains to clarify prior ownership rights. I would personally love to see Rumbarger returned to it's former glory: I graduated from Central Christian in 1970 and my school bus stop was directly in front of the cemetery. 40 years ago, Rumbarger was already deteriorating. It is a shame to see the crypt(cn be seen from Main Street) falling apart in front of our eyes and I would not be surprised to see vandals already entering the building.

If those cannons were placed by the GAR, the ownership of them is probably the US Government and not the cemetery. Regardless, if these are Civil War vintage, the value of the canons may be very high.

Our blueberry bushes have been pruned to ground level by deer and the resident groundhog. Guess I got to start all over again, unless the roots have life left in them!

Thanks! I'm going to have to investigate! I have a fairly large collection of GAR memoriabilia including a ribbon that says DuBois, PA on it. It looks like it "could" be GAR but it also could be another benevolent organization. IIRC, it does have a post number on, so, as I said, I'll have to investigate.

Did DuBois have a GAR post?

We have a map of the proposed "Otocsin Project" at our camp. The proposed project spanned thousands of acres, from the resevoir north to Parker Dam and Elliot State Park. Ski lifts, railroad ride and all kinds of other activites were proposed (plus dramatically increasing the size of the resevoir).
