Lupara reacted to lavender in Pruning tomatoes?
I don't. I'll take off bottom leaves and plant more of the stem in the spring. This will encourage root growth. After that you only prune indeterminate tomatoes if you are going to do it at all. Pruning determinate ones will lower your yield considerably. If you stake your tomatoes taking out the suckers will control the plant and perhaps increase the size of your tomatoes. It may also lower your yield. Late in the season some people top the tomatoes. If you take off the top it will no longer grow taller and will give the tomatoes on the plant a chance to ripen before the frost. Removing the side shoots will also increase air flow which might be a good idea if there is a lot of rain and high humidity that increases the chance of fungus diseases. It just depends on what your are aiming at. Highly controlled pruned plants are more likely to give you big, perfect tomatoes. Letting them grow will give you a higher yield

Lupara got a reaction from steelnut in 2018 Gardens
The garden got a much overdue dose of mushroom compost this spring. Looks to be paying off very well. Yellow squash about 4". Heavy stems on the tomato plants. Cukes looking good. All the makings of a banner year so far.

How are everyone's garden's doing this year? I had to water my garden on Sunday because it was just parched and sad looking. But yesterday's rain made a world of difference, everything looks great (crossing fingers and toes) including my flower beds. Wishing all a very fruitful and plentiful season!

Lupara reacted to Petee in WHAT KIND OF WEED IS THIS?
If it has segments like bamboo and if it reddish where it comes out of the ground, you have been gifted by Japanese Knotweed. It is nearly impossible to get rid of unless you are always diligent not to let it develop any leaves. Round Up won't knock it down it for long. Even one leaf that unfurls successfully adds carbs to the roots.
You will see it growing along creeks and it destroys all native plants in its path. I have given information to quite a few people on how to get rid of it, and a burner applied at the first sign of growth works well, but it takes a while to starve out the roots. It must use up its store of carbs in the roots before it will not resprout. You can try.
The link has excellent information, but it's for a company that professionally removes it. You don't need them.

Lupara got a reaction from sapphire in what's your favorite garden tomato?
Ah Geez. I got the Zebra, the Atomic, the Sun Gold, the Purple Cheyenne, the Yellow Pear, the Celebrity and the Ox Heart. Don't make me come back down there. For now my neighbors, friends, family, strangers passing by, and I thank you. Do let us know how the new varieties taste. See you next year.

Stopped in at the BUDS plant bazaar today. The selection of tomato varieties was unlike any I've ever seen. I couldn't begin to list them all. I came away with a half dozen different varieties to try out. Very cordial, helpful and knowledgeable hosts as well. I highly recommend a visit. This will be an annual stop for me.

Yeah, Mayochup just isn't right. I'm kind of partial to Catwhip (miracle whip instead of mayo) myself.

Steel's question remains unanswered. It's a fair question. How will not voting change anything?

We pay for OSHA, but I don't expect them or any other agency to prevent all deaths no more than an alarm on a resident will keep them from falling or being strangled in a bedrail. I hope their is a monetary judgement. I hope that the people who were negligent are fired and face criminal charges. Nevertheless, garbage will continue to be collected and disposed of, and accidents like this will continue to happen as long as the financial punishments are so embarrassingly small.

Please explain how not voting at all will change anything? I despise the two party system probably more that you do. But, I also understand that if we want anything to change and if we all sit by and not vote, how do you think things will actually change? I'm serious, it would be the same old, same old. And that goes on too much as it is.
