You  might also find some photos of when that track was cut down to 1/4 mile and used for auto racing.  I believe the time frame for that was late '50's to mid '60's.  That use was stopped, according to stories of the day, by complaints about dust and noise by the Maple Avenue Hospital.

During that time frame there were still some people who trained and boarded their horses in the stables there.  I believe the stables were under the grandstands, but old memories can't always be trusted.  It may have been a separate building too.

I remember when I was in 6th grade my classmate/friend raced a quarter midget racer there.

  2. I can only tell you about a ghost story going around in the 1960's.  In Sabula where the boy scout camp is there were supposed to be ghosts - in particular I remember hearing about a ghost horse that did not gallop but moved smoothly across the property .  As an initiation the boy scouts had to camp there at night  and they were scared to death.  I was never a boy scout (probably too scared to become one after hearing the ghost stories LOL) but maybe some former boy scouts from the 60's can chime in on this story.

This is my fear of a union. I wouldn't want that as an operator, and I definitely don't want that as a manager. Typically when a union gets a foot in the door down here, that's where it starts. A disgruntled employee.

That's why I run my landfill the way I do. My men respect me, and I respect them. I was an operator once, too, and I treat them the way I would want to be treated. I take ownership of my operation, and my men take ownership of their jobs. We don't want an outside group to be the mediator.

I would imagine the operators there are the same way. If they are like a typical landfill, they have all been working there for years. I see much less turnover in the waste industry than I did in construction. Most operators I know at my landfill and others have been there 10+ years. Chances are the operators were there before the current owners were. That's why I don't understand the silence...

    Job security?

  4. WOW - sorry to say - but it does look like it went from "weeping" to "dying".  When you break a piece of the branch, is it dry and brittle?  Did you see any worms (like May saw worm) or caterpillars (like tent worm) or beetles (like Japanese beetle) on it this spring or summer?  Still, dying that quickly, it almost looks like someone sprayed it with a brush killer. Hopefully you can get a new one at an end of season sale at a local nursery and replace it.
