  1. Margaret E. Carmella, age 98, a former long-time resident of DuBois, PA, died Monday, September 30, 2024 at the Saint John Community, Edge Wood Grove Personal Care facility in Mars PA. Born May 31, 1926 in Reynoldsville, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (McCutcheon) Hughes. On July 25, 1947, she married James R. Carmella. He preceded her in death on December 9, 2012. She was retired from part-time work at Penn Traffic and J. C. Pennys stores in DuBois, PA. She was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the DuBois Country Club. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who is survived by her daughter, Cathy Chambers and her husband Elwood of Columbus, OH, two sons, James D. Carmella and his wife, Debbie of Indiana, PA and Bradley R. Carmella and his wife, Darlene of Hamilton, OH; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Debbie Carmella Pettigrew, two sisters, Alberta Knisley and Agnes Horner and two brothers, John and William Hughes. The funeral arrangements will be private. The Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery beside her late husband.   2. Arthur F. Kear, Sr., age 95 of DuBois, PA, formerly of Weedville, PA died Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Christ the King Manor. Born on May 16, 1929 in Weedville, PA, he was the son of the late George E. and Beatrice (Champion) Kear, Sr. On July 16, 1949 he married his wife of 63 years, Arbutus L. (Tesauro) Kear. She preceded him in death on October 30, 2012. Arthur was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served during the Korean War. He retired from Keystone Carbon in St. Marys after 39 years of service. Arthur was a member of the Weedville Methodist Church. He is survived by his children (Arthur F. Kear, Jr. and his wife Cathy of Conrad, PA, Brenda Cardellino & her husband Dave of Cross Forks, PA and Karen Aloi and her husband Mark of Weedville, PA), two grandchildren (Tonia Catalone and Arthur Kear, III), three great grandchildren (Aubrean Miller, and Maddie, and Gabe Kear), two great-great grandchildren (Kianna & Thalia Catalone), and a sister (Connie Kunes and her husband Burton of Weedville, PA). He was preceded in death by five brothers (Vernon, Herbert, Barry, Fred, and George E. Kear, Jr.) and three sisters (Martha Kear, Violet Town, and Priscilla Scusa-Crete) There will be no public visitation and services will be held at the convenience of the family.   3. Helen T. Straub, age 86 of DuBois, PA passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at her home. Born on May 3, 1938 in Johnsonburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Theresa (Zawacki) Kasmierski. On October 11, 1958 she married her husband of 65 years, Kenton “Ken” Straub. He survives. Helen was a homemaker and a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. She loved to play bingo and cards, and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Above all, she adored spending time with her family. Along with her husband, she is survived by her children (Christine Sherretz and her husband Richard of Pleasant Gap, PA, Kathryn Mitchell and her husband Randy of Grampian, PA, David Straub and his wife Christine of Falls Creek, PA, Donald Straub and his wife Linda of Hollidaysburg, PA, Robert Straub and his wife Amy of Falls Creek, PA and Daniel “Gus” Straub of DuBois, PA), thirteen grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, one brother (Thomas Kasmierski of Mehoopany, PA) and one sister (Julia Benson of Johnsonburg, PA). Helen was preceded in death by two brothers (Charles and Chester Kasmierski) and one daughter in law (Deborah Straub). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 PM at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 10 AM from Holy Spirit Parish at St. Michael the Archangel with Father John Malthaner as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery.   4. Patricia L. Kirsch, age 81, of Falls Creek, PA, died Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Christ the King Manor surrounded by her family. Born on July 31, 1943 in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late William T. and Marion (Camp) McNamee. On August 21, 1965 she married her husband of 59 years, Darrell Kirsch. He survives. Pat was a Registered Nurse for 50 years working in various areas of nursing including Obstetrics, Home Health, College Health Nurse, Bi-County Addictions Center, Director of Nursing at Christ the King Manor, Community Mental Health Center- Partial Hospitalization, and SAMS (Service Access Management). She was especially fond of her many years of psychiatric nursing and served as an exemplary advocate for her consumers. In 2002, she received the Pennsylvania National Alliance on Mental Illness Professional of the Year Award. Only one of these awards is made per year for the entire state.Pat was a member of St Bernard Roman Catholic Church in Falls Creek where she was active in the Holy Name Society, Catholic Daughter’s of Americas, and was a faith formation instructor. She served as an active member of the Falls Creek FOE with the Ladies Auxiliary for 50 years. She was a member of the Retired Pennsylvania State Police Auxiliary, formerly serving as Sergeant at Arms. Pat enjoyed dancing, singing, going to garage sales/flea markets, and casino trips. She loved her Cinch tournaments. She never missed her annual trip to Ocean City, NJ with her family/extended family for 40+ years. She was a true servant to her family and community in every way. She was a dedicated wife to the love of her life, Darrell, and a dedicated mother to her children, grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren, the light of her life. Her philosophy in life was always "to make people happy." Her motto, "Everyday is a party." Along with her husband, Pat is survived by her children (Michaelene Landy and her husband Michael of Monaca, PA, Patricia Fertal and her husband Thomas of Lititz, PA, Shannon Morgans and her husband Sean of Bethel Park, PA, and Timothy Kirsch and his wife Leah of Fairchance, PA, grandchildren (Brittney Sladick and her husband Ben of Raccoon Township, PA, Shane Landy and his wife Janeen of Industry, PA, Bridget Fertal of Lafayette, CO, Sarah Fertal of Westchester, PA, Bernadette, Jacob, Matthew, and Patrick Fertal all of Lititz, PA, and Isaac and Juliana Kirsch of Fairchance, PA, great grandchildren (Jace Michael & Cade Robert Sladick and Quinn Genevieve Patricia Landy), her sisters (Sharon Adcock, Maureen McNamee, and Colleen Yeager and her husband Edward, all of Clearfield, PA), one brother (William McNamee and his wife Susan of Florida), and numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter (Bridget Kirsch), her grandchildren (Chris, Charlie, and Gabriel Fertal), her brother (Michael McNamee), nieces (Brooke Yeager, Caroline Kirsch) and nephews (Bruce Graham and Jeffrey Kirsch).   5. Elizabeth “Betty” Robbins, Age 88 of DuBois, PA died Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Christ the King Manor. Born on October 9, 1935 in DuBois, PA, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Veronica (Tamachaski) Kolash, Sr. On May 14, 1977, she married her husband of 45 years, Franklin W. “Frank” Robbins, Jr. He preceded her in death on October 11, 2022. Betty retired from Riverside Penn Traffic Company and previous to that, she worked at Jackson China Company in Falls Creek for over 30 years. Betty was a member of the former St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church and attended St. Catherine of Siena. She enjoyed going to the YMCA, loved to go to country music, and loved to camp in Cook Forest with her husband Frank. Betty enjoyed people and loved socializing. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She is survived by a brother (William F. Kolash, Jr. & his wife Shelli of DuBois, PA), a niece (Laura LaBrasca and her husband Rudy of DuBois, PA), a nephew (William Kolash and his wife Kris of DuBois, PA), two step nieces (Stephanie Dick and her husband Brian of Troutville, PA, and Stacie Gula of Sykesville, PA), three great nieces (Abby Russo, Cara Labrasca, and Dana Caraveo), three great nephews (Nate Kolash and Nick and Luke Labrasca) as well as a two step great nephews (Brenden and Mark Chesley).   6. Jeffrey A. Emerick, age 67 of DuBois, PA died Monday, September 16, 2024 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital. Born on December 2, 1956 in Gratis, OH, he was the son of the late Benjamin E.and Florence (Carter) Emerick. Jeff was the owner/operator of Mountain Refrigeration and Sandy Valley Companies. He was a very generous and giving person donating his own time, money and talents to many charities and organizations in the area. Jeff was attending Bible College, enjoyed fishing, golfing and was a local musician. He especially enjoyed his one hobby and business, Mountain Metal Art, where he created masterpieces with his plasma cutter. Above all, he loved God and was a follower of His teaching. He is survived by one daughter (Tamara Emerick Osmon and her husband Shehr Yar Abid of Middletown, OH), four grandchildren (Garrett, Jordan, Dakota and Savannah), one great grandson (Jackson), and his dog (Lady). Jeff was preceded in death by one son (Paul Emerick) and one brother (Ben Emerick). Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 2 – 4 PM at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.   7. Mike Lee Buttrill, age 65 of DuBois, PA died Monday, September 16, 2024 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Born in 1959 in Denton, TX, he was the son of the late Wilbur D. and Ruth (Faught) Buttrill. In 1982 he married his high school sweetheart and wife of 42 years, Julie (Boyce) Buttrill. She survives. From a young age Mike possessed the drive to excel. In little league baseball he pitched a no hitter. In high school he was first chair alto sax and won districts in Tennis. Mike graduated from Denton High School in 1977, received a diploma for Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University in 1981 in Electrical Engineering. Mike received his MBA from the University of North Texas in 1993. He completed a graduate work/study Global Marketing program through the University of New Hampshire in conjunction with BAE in 1997. He worked in robotics, manufacturing and finance throughout his adult life. Mike was a world traveler. He loved Cowboy Football, Stars Hockey, golf, backyard pit fires, his family and his granddaughter Chyanne. He treated people with respect and lived his life well, with honor and dignity. We were so very lucky to have him in our lives. Mike will be missed terribly. Mike is survived by his two sons (Miles David Buttrill and his wife Kayla of Dover, PA, and Grant Michael Buttrill of DuBois, PA), and one grandchild (Chyanne K. Buttrill). He was preceded in death by three sisters (Linda Little, Joyce Parrish, and Jane Rollin). There will be no public visitation and a service will be held at the convenience of the family.   8. Louis James Beck, Jr., age 75 of Tionesta, PA died Sunday, September 15, 2024 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital. Born on March 31, 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Louis James and Ida (Oliver) Beck, Sr. He was a 1967 graduate of North Allegheny High School and went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from the University of Dayton. Lou was a Civil Engineer working mainly with sewage treatment plants throughout South Florida. He lived the majority of his life in Florida, and upon retirement, moved back to Pennsylvania. Lou enjoyed golfing, fishing and following the Pittsburgh sports teams. He especially loved the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lou is survived by three sisters (Patty Shawley of Scottsville, VA, Pam Manny and her husband Mike of Glennville, CA and Penny Cronin and her husband John of Garden Grove, CA), nieces (Katie Shawley of Alexandria, VA and Amy Paquette (Tom) of Troy, VA), great nephews (Henry and James Paquette), and great niece (Josephine Paquette). He was preceded in death by one nephew (Brian Shawley) and his brother-in-law (Steve Shawley). There will be no public visitation and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.   9. Barbara M. (DeRalph) Bolam, age 82 of DuBois, PA died Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital. Born on August 20, 1942 in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Joseph W. and Margaret (Heilbrun) DeRalph. Barb was a 1960 graduate of DuBois Area High School. On May 12, 1962 she married James L. Bolam. He preceded her in death on February 22, 2019. Barb had worked for the Internal Revenue Service, owned a retail establishment, and retired from the Area Agency on Aging as a Field Coordinator for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She was a past board member of Cultural Resources, Inc., a homeroom mother for her children and team mother for Shankel’s baseball team. Barb was a true friend. She enjoyed reading, surfing the web and yard sales. She is survived by her children; James L. Bolam, II (Mary) of DuBois, PA, and Justine Bolam of DuBois, PA, grandchildren; Patrick Bolam (Marybeth), John Bolam (Claire), Samantha Wright and Kate Wright, great grandchildren; August, Max, Penny and Leona Bolam, and her fiancé/companion Ray Hepburn with whom she graduated. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024 from 4 – 6 PM at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. A funeral service will be held Friday at 6PM from the funeral home with Pastor Terry Felt officiating. Burial will follow in Morningside Cemetery.   10. Joseph B. Scarnati, Jr., age 87 of Brockway, PA passed away suddenly, Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital. Born on March 3, 1937 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph B. and Edith (Gallo) Scarnati, Sr. In 1958 he married his high school sweetheart, and wife of 66 years, Yvonne A. (Swanson) Scarnati. She survives. Joe was a tool and die maker by trade. He worked at Brockway Pressed Metals until 1968 when he joined his father at the Rocky Grill where he worked until his retirement in 2002. He was a proud Alumni of the Brockway High School Class of 1955, and enjoyed monthly get togethers at local restaurants with his classmates. Joe was a member of St. Tobias Roman Catholic Church and the Brockway Sportsman’s Club. He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and was a gun collector. He loved telling stories of his experiences and times at the Rocky Grill and his high school years. Joe loved riding motorcycles all of his life and rode his Harley until he was 82 years old. Above all, he was immensely proud of his family, his Italian heritage, and their accomplishments as first-generation immigrants. He was raised in an old school tradition that defines who he was. He will be missed by many. In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his daughter (Sherie L. Scarnati) of Oakmont, PA), his son (Joseph B. Scarnati, III and his wife Amy of Brockway, PA), two grandchildren (Kelly Plummer and her husband Matt of Mechanicsburg, PA and Michael Scarnati of Oakmont, PA) and one sister (Sylvia DiVenere and her husband Tony of Bay Village, OH). He was preceded in death by one brother (James Scarnati), one granddaughter (Lisa Scarnati) and his beloved Shiloh Shepherd, (Ava). There will be no public visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 10 AM from St. Tobias Roman Catholic Church with Father John Detisch as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Tobias Cemetery. Although flowers are appreciated, the family would rather you make a contribution to a charity of the donor’s choice.   11. Sandra L. Woodward, age 74 of Penfield, PA died Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Christ the King Manor. Born on October 22, 1949 in Brownsville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Eloise (Davis) Crumrine. On March 29, 1969 she married Norman H. Woodward. He survives. Sandra worked for the United States Postal Service for 27 years. She retired as the Postmaster in Force, PA. She was a member of Penfield Global Church where she had served as treasurer for many years, and had also served on the board of directors for the Bennett’s Valley Ambulance Service. Sandra enjoyed knitting and crocheting, but above all, she loved spending time with her family. Along with her husband, she is survived by two daughters; Amy Klein (Michael) of East Brady, PA, and Marina Whitehead (Scott) of Penfield, PA), two grandchildren (Shaun and Shaylah Klein). She was preceded in death by one sister (Sunny Fullas). There will be no public visitation. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 11 AM from Penfield Global Church with Pastor Lorraine Knapp officiating.   12. Marylin “Janette” Hayes, age 89 of Luthersburg, PA died Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at The DuBois Village. Born on October 27, 1934 in Salem, PA, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Edith (Lydick) Delp. On July 12, 1954 she married her loving husband of 67 years, Charles S. Hayes. He preceded her in death on March 20, 2022. Janette loved being a homemaker and was known for her hospitality, generosity and being an amazing cook and pie maker. She loved to feed the birds, pick her red raspberries on the family farm, and tend to her amazing garden. Although the farm was her favorite place, Janette loved traveling anywhere from the California National Parks to Europe and Africa. Her love of God and neighbor led her to a 58-year, volunteer ministry as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Charles and Janette were both from farm backgrounds, children of the Depression, and graduates of Brady High School. With patience, hard work and a generous spirit, they made a good life for themselves. As expressed, they were quite a team. Janette had an uncanny knack for turning a gray sky blue. Janette is survived by three children (Gary Hayes and his wife Mary of Luthersburg, PA, Jeff Hayes and his wife Ravenna of Atascadero, CA and Cynthia Quici and her husband James of State College, PA), two grandchildren (Christina Hayes and Garrett Hayes and his wife Mandie), two sisters (Hazel Kriner of DuBois, PA, and Evelyn Vandervort and her husband Richard of York, PA). She was preceded in death by one brother (Willis Delp), three sisters (Beula Kessler, Elsie King and Vera Shaffer). There will be no public visitation. The family will hold a zoom funeral at their convenience. Interment will take place in Luthersburg Union Cemetery.   13. James F. Krach, age 89 of DuBois, PA died Monday, September 9, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on June 27, 1935 in Salem, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond J. and Fannie (Marsh) Krach. On December 21, 1956 he married his wife of 67 years, Hazel (Moore) Krach. She survives. Jim was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served during the Korean War. After his service in the Marine Corps, he served for 28 years in the Army National Guard, retiring as a Command Sargeant Major. He was also the president of Krach and Gearhart Coal Company. Jim was a member of Treasure Lake Church and the Garfield Lodge #559 Free and Accepted Masons. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and vacationing with his family in Cape May, NJ. Along with his wife, Jim is survived by two daughters (Kandace K. Ishman and her husband D. Scott of DuBois, PA and Kimberly K. Cook and her husband Kevin of Bridgeville, DE), three grandchildren (Crystal Cook, Courtney Eichacker and her husband Charles and Elizabeth Tomko and her husband Brad), two great grandchildren (Aurora and Asher Tomko), and two step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son (James F. Krach), one brother (Jess W. Krach), and an infant granddaughter (Jennifer Cook).   14. After a short illness, Marlin Neal Hoffer, age 94, of DuBois, PA and St Simon’s Island, GA, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024. Born on February 2, 1930 in Palmyra, PA, he was the son of the late Neal and Selma (Miller) Hoffer. On April 7, 1956 he married his wife of 68 years, Joan (McKee) Hoffer. She survives. Marlin was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean War. He served as DuBois City Engineer and Public Works Director from 1967 to 1984. Under his watch, his accomplishments included, the Memorial Park, the Industrial Park, and the Sandy Lick Flood Control Projects. From 1984 to 1994 he was cofounder and broker of Hoffer Realty Associates. Marlin stayed active with hunting, motorcycling, four-wheeling and morning visits to McDonalds. Marlin was active in Sunday school classes at Treasure Lake Church and the United Methodist Church in St. Simon’s Island, GA. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Jim Hoffer (Teresa), Mike Hoffer (Cindy), Mark Hoffer (Darla), two daughters; Jan Matko (Bill), and Linda Quinlisk (John), 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one brother Carl Hoffer (Kem).   15. Merrilee Joy Harer, age 71 of DuBois, PA died Friday, September 6, 2024 at her home. Born on November 25, 1952 in Tiffin, OH, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Alta (Lust) Harer. Merrilee was a graduate of Buckeye Central High School and Mt. Aloysius College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy. She retired from Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital in Home Health as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant after many years of service. Merrilee was a member of Life Community Church in DuBois where she was very active in church affairs. She enjoyed reminiscing and telling stories about growing up on the family farm, enjoyed going to the movies and vacationing in St. Thomas. Above all, Merrilee loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.   17. William R. “Ray” Shofestall, age 88 of Falls Creek, PA died Saturday, August 31, 2024 at Sycamore Estate Personal Care Home in Duquesne, PA. Born on November 5, 1935 in Falls Creek, PA, he was the son of the late William C. and Gladys M. (Yount) Shofestall. On October 24, 1956 he married Susan N. (Shontz) Shofestall. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2020. Ray was a retired optician who had worked for various doctors in the DuBois area. He was a gospel pianist for various churches in the DuBois area over the years. His most recent church was Falls Creek United Methodist. Ray went to Arby’s in Falls Creek daily, and made friends with many of the staff. They said that he was the highlight of their day. Ray is survived by one son (Rod Shofestall and his wife Laura of Falls Creek, PA), one granddaughter (Shanna Lingle and her partner Brianne Danko of West Mifflin, PA), six grandsons and numerous great grandchildren.   18. Patrick J. Reilly, Sr., age 88 of DuBois, PA died Thursday, August 29, 2024 at his home. Born on November 11, 1935 in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late James W. and Catherine J. (Jones) Reilly. On January 16, 1960 he married Donna (Skupien) Reilly at the United States Marine Corps Base in Camp Lejune, NC. They were married for 56 years. She preceded him in death on January 25, 2016. Patrick attended Greater Gallitzin High School where he played football and baseball. He studied at Penn State University for his undergraduate, California University of Pennsylvania for his bachelor’s, and St. Francis University for his Masters. His post graduate studies were various engineering and management disciplines. Patrick was in the United States Marine Corps where he moved up ranks from Reserve Infantry Man, to a Commissioned Officer of a Combat Engineer Battalion, to Executive Officer of the 5th Special Infantry Company. He was then promoted to Major. He was a proud veteran. Patrick worked various engineering positions in his life before becoming owner of Cooper Tire & Auto of DuBois, PA as well as P. J. Reilly Trucking Company, Inc. Patrick was avidly involved in his community. He was the former President of the DuBois Chamber of Commerce, as well as the YMCA. He led and participated in various fundraising efforts for the DuBois Central Catholic Schools and St. Catherine of Siena Church. He was also the originator and first chairman of the DuBois Area Economic Development Corporation and a participant on the extension of Beaver Drive and the development of the Industrial/Commercial Park. He is survived by three children: Debra Petak and her husband Joseph, Elizabeth DeWyer and her husband J.R., and P.J. Reilly, Jr. and his wife Bridget. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Tanecha and Sean Reilly, Tara Newhart and her husband Bill, Tessa Petak, Aaron DeWyer, and Natalie Jaggi and her husband Alex. Born on August 22, 1950 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late Dorsey and Alice M. (Hoover) Smiley. Allan was veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served during the Vietnam Era. He had retired from the BonTon department store in DuBois in September of 2015 after 11 years of service. Previous to that, he had been employed at Sears for 15 years and DuBois Regional Medical Center for 20 years. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish at St. Catherine. He loved to play on his tablet, and was very passionate about keeping his yard perfect.   20. Vernon E. Dunworth, age 92 of DuBois, PA went to be with his Lord and Savior and his daughter Diane Kuntz, Thursday, August 22, 2024. Born on June 23, 1932 in Grampian, PA, he was the son of the late Vernon I. and Helen (Ritz) Dunworth. On June 27, 1953, he married his wife of 71 years, Kathleen (Crowley) Dunworth. She survives. Vern had a work ethic that would not stop. He began his career at Hallstrom Construction in March of 1953. Throughout his 45 years of service to Hallstrom's, he became part owner and President of Hallstrom Electric. Vern was a member of the First Baptist Church in DuBois and the Rockton Community Bible Church where he was very active in church affairs. In his youth, he and his close friend, the late Carl Cooper, established the Chestnut Grove Community Center. He spent countless hours devoted to his church, his community, his family, and his neighbors. Born on October 25, 1928 in Bitumen, PA, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Cora Belle (Sommerson) Nesman She married Ernest E. Fairman. He preceded her in death in 1982. Shirley was a lifelong member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, first Tamarack and then in DuBois. She was very active in missionary work , both here and abroad. Shirley raised African violets, was an avid knitter, loved crocheting, and enjoyed working in her garden. Above all, she was a very loving mother who cared deeply for her family.   22. Joseph E. “Ed” Crissman, age 70 of Warren, OH died Monday, August 19, 2024 at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Born on January 22, 1954 in Clarion, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Florence (Hartzell) Crissman. Ed was a veteran of the United States Army, serving for over 20 years as a Staff Sergeant. After his service to our country, Ed worked as an over the road truck driver for various carriers for more than 20 years. He enjoyed being at home, spending time with his grandchildren and loved the Pittsburgh Steelers.   23. Calvin W. Fike, age 60 of Punxsutawney, PA died Thursday, August 15, 2024 at the home of his mother. Born on July 26, 1964 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of Ronald Fike and Marlene J. (Henry) Fike. His father preceded him in death and his mother survives. Calvin was a graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School, he attended St. Mark's Seminary and was a 1987 graduate of Gannon University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies. He was a substitute school teacher, and was a licensed Pennsylvania Real Estate Agent. He had worked as head of security at the DuBois Mall and previous to that, had worked at both Lowes and Wal Mart in DuBois. He enjoyed the traveling, loved cats and was a New York Yankees fan. Calvin loved the outdoors and volunteering with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Along with his mother, Calvin is survived by his aunts (Shirley Turner, Florence Fike, Pat Turner and Hazel Fike and their families), and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by one sister (Michele R. Fike), and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Born on October 14, 1952 in DuBois, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry Drum and Virginia (Brady) Hollen. On June 9, 1973, she married George L. Corle. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2017. Ida worked at Fashion Bug for many years and taught driver's education. She was a member of the Daughters of Scotia, the Falls Creek Eagles, and was a member of the Gelnett Memorial Church. Ida loved playing bingo, traveling, and she enjoyed going with her husband to fairs and festivals with their concession stand.   25. Anthony A. Gomes, age 91 of DuBois, PA died Monday, August 12, 2024 at Christ the King Manor. Born on March 28, 1933 in Lowell, MA, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Viera) Gomes Santos. Anthony was a veteran of the United States Air Force, being honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class. He was a graduate of the Art Institute of Boston. On November 15, 1959 he married his wife of 64 years, Mary Jo (Hopkins) Gomes. She survives. Anthony worked for the Raytheon Company in Massachusetts, and had worked as a designer for Brockway Glass for 23 years, and then Owens Illinois in Toledo, OH for 7 years. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in DuBois and the 50/50 Group. Anthony was a well-known local artist. He was a member of the Toledo Ohio Sculpture Guild. His talent and many works have been on display at the Winkler Art Gallery of Fine Art in DuBois, as well as the Spectrum Gallery in Toledo, OH. Along with his wife, Anthony is survived by his two sons (Kevin and John Gomes both of High Point, NC), and one grandchild (Ryan Anthony Gomes of Thomasville, NC).
