  7. Article #7 - Fourth Series - May 29th, 2023 by Fr. Ben Daghir Editor's Note: This article is a summary from a homily preached by Fr. Ben Daghir at DuBois Central Catholic on September 27, 2022. The Gospel was Luke 9:51-56. Article: Our Gospel is very short today but it’s packed with a relevant lesson for us. Notice this line, “he [Jesus] resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem.” Jesus is very unique because of His remarkable focus on this goal. Of course, Jerusalem is where Jesus will be crucified, buried, and resurrected. His whole goal is directed toward Jerusalem and He doesn’t let anything or anyone get in the way of this. Consider, for example, all of the distractions and adversities that Jesus had to face: His apostles try to prevent Him from going to Jerusalem. His friends desert Him. He is scourged at the pillar. He is mocked, humiliated, and unjustly accused. The Romans place a crown of thorns around His head. He has nails put into his hands and feet. Yet, despite all of this adversity and pain, He continues with a single-minded focus to do the Father’s will - to save us through His death and resurrection. In other words, Jesus is resolutely determined and focused on one thing. One thing. One thing. One thing. If you are anything like me, then you are about many things. One moment we are concerned about what people will think of us. Another moment we think “what if I fail?” or “What if I am not enough?” Yet, another moment we consider quitting, complaining, casting blame on someone else, or simply focusing on our fears and failures. We are filled with worries, concerns, and anxieties. These can manifest themselves in the simplest of ways: “What If I fail this test?” or “What if I strike out?” or “What if I forget my lines in the play?” or “What if I don’t do well enough on the SAT’s or the driver’s test?” or “What if I don’t live up to the person that I am meant to be?” What if. What if. What if. Doubts. Worries. Fears. Anxieties. It’s a mind that is preoccupied on many, many things instead of the goal. These many things can pile up, weigh us down, run through our heads, and paralyze us. They keep us from reaching our Jerusalem, our goal. Here is a quote that has always motivated me, “A Catholic saint is all about one thing - Jesus Christ.” Jesus constantly says to us, “Be not afraid!” for a reason. He wants us to be about one thing - Him. On the other hand, we are concerned about many things when we are fearful. It’s paralyzing, painful, and isolating. Jesus wants us to have the same single-minded, goal-oriented focus as Him. He wants us to be free, to excel, and to thrive. Six weeks ago at our first Mass of the year, I directed your attention to our mascot on the wall. Take another look. Is our Cardinal worried and concerned about many things? Of course not. Our mascot is focused on one thing - the goal. Like Jesus, our mascot has a single-minded focus and an undivided heart. He is all in and totally goal-oriented. That needs to be you, that needs to be me. That’s what it means to be a Cardinal. That’s what it means to be a Catholic too. ======================== Fr. 8. SPECIAL EDITION ARTICLE #15 - May 23rd, 2023 by Fr. Ben Daghir Editor’s Note: Fr. Ben Daghir preached this homily to the student body at DuBois Central Catholic on May 18, 2023, during the last Mass of the academic year. Fr. Daghir related this last homily of the year to the first homily from August 24, 2022. The homily focuses on excellence and sainthood. Article: This is our last school Mass for the 2022-2023 academic year. I’d like to take a moment and connect the first homily of the year with our Feast of the Ascension today. There is a clear connection between the two: we are called to greater heights. This means that Jesus demands sainthood and we are built for Heaven. In today’s feast, we celebrate Jesus ascending into Heaven. It’s an upward movement toward the heights. The Christian life is oriented toward Heaven. Now, let’s reflect back on the first homily to kick off the school year. On August 24, 2022, I preached on the Gospel phrase “You will see greater things.” I mentioned that Jesus Christ constantly calls us beyond our comfort zones to greater adventure. Jesus always raises the bar. Jesus does not settle for mediocrity. Jesus demands excellence. Only then will we see “greater things.” I then directed our attention during that first homily to our school mascot, the cardinal. I asked, “How do you get a cardinal to fly?” The answer, of course, is to break its branch. Our cardinal mascot is clearly not perching on a branch. Instead, the cardinal is in flight. A cardinal is not built to sit on a branch just as you are not built for mediocrity. The cardinal is soaring to new heights. The cardinal is on a mission. The image of our mascot gives us a clear message: we are not built for mediocrity but rather for excellence. In the Christian life, we call this sainthood. To our seniors, who were the people that challenged you this year to leave the branch of mediocrity and enter into the realm of excellence? Was it a teacher or a coach? Was it a classmate or a teammate? Was it a priest or a principal? Identify moments during this past year in which your branch was broken and you began to soar toward greater heights. Be grateful for these challenging moments. I promise you that no one will have higher expectations for you than Jesus Christ. He knows you. He knows your gifts and talents. He has a plan for you. Just as He ascended into Heaven, He desires for you to ascend to Heaven. He wants you to raise the bar and to leave your comfort zone. The world will appear to set the bar high for you but that bar will fade away over time. The worldly bar will neither satisfy your deepest longings nor reach your greatest dreams. The Catholic Church, which continues the mission of Jesus Christ, will always demand the most out of you. It’s the Church that will always challenge you to excellence, to sainthood. To our seniors and all of our DuBois Central Catholic students, know that Jesus Christ has high expectations for you. Allow Him to make you a saint. ======================== Fr. 16. One Thing, Jesus Christ. SPECIAL EDITION ARTICLE #16 - May 26th, 2023 by Fr. Ben Daghir Editor’s Note: Fr. Ben Daghir celebrates his one-year anniversary of the priesthood on May 27th. This one-year reflection focuses on the consistent prayer “Through Christ our Lord.” Article: The prayer “Through Christ our Lord” caught my attention during the first year of priesthood. I find the phrase to be incredibly challenging and intriguing. “Through Christ our Lord” is stated more than any other prayer during the Mass. Of course, this is intentional. “Through Christ our Lord” is prayed because Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and humanity. Jesus says in the Gospel of John, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). The priest, despite his weaknesses, humbly stands in the sanctuary with the great responsibility of assisting parishioners to worship “Through Christ our Lord.” I now understand Paul’s phrase, “We hold this treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Corinthians 4:7). I am undoubtedly an earthen vessel with a few cracks and deformities while Christ is the pure treasure. The prayer “Through Christ our Lord” has brought out the best in me over this past year. But I must confess, it has also cast light on the darkness in my soul (which is a good thing). If the saint allows for everything to go “Through Christ our Lord,” the sinner has tendencies of directing things “away from Christ our Lord.” I am certainly a sinner. Just as Jesus hands over His entire being to the Father while on the Cross, the saints follow His lead. The saints direct their hopes, dreams, goals, relationships, gifts, talents, hobbies, expectations, perspectives, friendships, opportunities, decisions, possibilities, etc. through Christ our Lord. The saints also direct their worries, stresses, temptations, anxieties, sins, fears, regrets, grudges, conflicts, hardships, etc. “Through Christ our Lord.” We are called to hand over our entire selves to Christ, which includes everything He has given us and even what He never gave us in the first place - our sins. Everything must go through Jesus Christ. I need to be like the saints. My whole life must be directed “Through Christ our Lord.” The good, the bad, and the ugly of my life must go through Him. My past, present, and future must go through Him. Everything must go “Through Christ our Lord.” Again, and this is straight from the boring Ben Daghir playbook, the sinner often convinces himself that the path “away from Christ our Lord” is the better, easier, and more effective route. My guess is that I am not alone in this faulty approach. I often forget the explicit words from Jesus, “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). The words “Through Christ our Lord” remind me that apart from Christ, I can do nothing. Another image that has helped me to understand “Through Christ our Lord” is that of the altar crucifix. Many Catholic Churches have an altar crucifix which faces the priest. This crucifix challenges the priest to see the people in the Church through Christ crucified and risen. The priest looks through Christ crucified and risen and out beyond the Church doors into the streets, the communities, and into the world. This means that the priest sees the culture, the nation, economics, politics, sports, medicine, music, education, hobbies, etc. through Christ crucified and risen. This means that the priest sees all his ministries through Christ crucified and risen. This means that the priest sees all the current challenges (and those down the road) through Christ crucified and risen. The message could not be clearer for the priest: see and interpret everything “Through Christ our Lord.” As I conclude this reflection, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the many parishioners who have tremendously helped me during my first year of priesthood. Not only has the Catholic Mass guided me during this first year but also the witness of parishioners living out the Gospel. I have seen parishioners place everything through Christ our Lord: the good, the bad, and the ugly. I have witnessed this in the hospital, among young families, the nursing home, funerals, baptisms, daily Mass, the Catholic school, the confessional, marriages, ordinations, confirmations, first Holy Communions, and much more. “Through Christ our Lord” must always be our focus. ======================== Fr. 18. This is damning information. According to the Durham Report, President Obama’s CIA Director John Brennan, then-Vice President Joe Biden, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and the infamous former Director of the FBI James Comey were briefed in August 2016 about the plan by Hillary Clinton and the DNC to create a false narrative linking President Trump to Russia. The FBI knew the Steele dossier was a sack of lies, and yet they still pushed false allegations in the nefarious FISA warrant applications against Carter Page. They made it a point to try to crush Trump and those around him. It was a purely political, banana republic effort to change the course of a presidential election and presidency. Many key Durham report findings were already disclosed thanks to Judicial Watch FOIA investigations and litigation. Durham let down the American people with few and failed prosecutions. Never in American history has so much government corruption faced so little accountability. Let me be clear, the FBI and Justice Department – and their political masters in the Obama White House – are responsible for the worst government corruption in American history. President Trump is a crime victim who was targeted by a seditious conspiracy by Obama, Biden, Clinton and their Deep State allies
