  1. 30,394 views Matt Taibbi My Authors 1.TWITTER FILES #19 The Great Covid-19 Lie Machine Stanford, the Virality Project, and the Censorship of “True Stories” 2.“The release of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s Spring 2020 emails… has been used to exacerbate distrust in Dr. Fauci.” “Increased distrust in Fauci’s expert guidance.” 3.“Reports of vaccinated individuals contracting Covid-19 anyway”; “natural immunity”; suggesting Covid-19 “leaked from a lab”; even “worrisome jokes”: 4.All were characterized as “potential violations” or disinformation “events” by the Virality Project, a sweeping, cross-platform effort to monitor billons of social media posts by Stanford University, federal agencies, and a slew of (often state-funded) NGOs. 5.Just before @ShellenbergerMD and I testified in the House last week, Virality Project emails were found in the #TwitterFiles describing “stories of true vaccine side effects” as actionable content. 6.We’ve since learned the Virality Project in 2021 worked with government to launch a pan-industry monitoring plan for Covid-related content. At least six major Internet platforms were “onboarded” to the same JIRA ticketing system, daily sending millions of items for review. 7.Though the Virality Project reviewed content on a mass scale for Twitter, Google/YouTube, Facebook/Instagram, Medium, TikTok, and Pinterest, it knowingly targeted true material and legitimate political opinion, while often being factually wrong itself. 8.This story is important for two reasons. One, as Orwellian proof-of-concept, the Virality Project was a smash success. Government, academia, and an oligopoly of would-be corporate competitors organized quickly behind a secret, unified effort to control political messaging. 9.Two, it accelerated the evolution of digital censorship, moving it from judging truth/untruth to a new, scarier model, openly focused on political narrative at the expense of fact. 10.THE BEGINNING: On February 5, 2021, just after Joe Biden took office, Stanford wrote to Twitter to discuss the Virality Project. By the 17th, Twitter agreed to join and got its first weekly report on “anti-vax disinformation,” which contained numerous true stories. 11. February 22, 2021: Stanford welcomed Twitter veterans like Yoel Roth and Brian Clarke, instructing them on how to join the group JIRA system. March 2, 2021: "We are beginning to ramp up our notification process to platforms.” In addition to the top-7 platforms, VP soon gained "visibility" to “alternative platforms such as Gab, Parler, Telegram, and Gettr” – near-total surveillance of the social media landscape. 13.Through July of 2020, Twitter’s internal guidance on Covid-19 required a story be “demonstrably false” or contain an “assertion of fact” to be actioned. But the Virality Project, in partnership with the CDC, pushed different standards. 14.VP told Twitter that “true stories that could fuel hesitancy,” including things like “celebrity deaths after vaccine” or the closure of a central NY school due to reports of post-vaccine illness, should be considered "Standard Vaccine Misinformation on Your Platform." 15. In one email to Twitter, VP addressed what it called the “vaccine passport narrative,” saying “concerns” over such programs “have driven a larger anti-vaccination narrative about the loss of rights and freedoms.” This was framed as a "misinformation" event. 16.VP routinely framed real testimonials about side effects as misinformation, from “true stories” of blood clots from AstraZeneca vaccines to a New York Times story about vaccine recipients who contracted the blood disorder thrombocytopenia. 17.By March of 2021, Twitter personnel were aping VP language, describing "campaigns against vaccine passports," "fear of mandatory immunizations," and "misuse of official reporting tools" as "potential violations." http://17.By 18. This echoed a report to Twitter by the Global Engagement Center re “Russia-linked” accounts: “While this account posts legitimate and accurate COVID-19 updates... it posts content that attacks Italian politicians, the EU, and the United States.” drive.google.com/file/d/1u2412d… External_20APR_-_Russia-linked_Inorganic_Activity_on_COVID-19_Present_in_Italian_Social_Media__1_.pdfhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1u2412d1uWlBr4w5wEEWv6H8Cl8PKyIW0/view 19.That same GEC report found in the #TwitterFiles identified former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, and former Italian Democratic Party Secretary Nicola Zingaretti (who’s been compared to Bernie Sanders) as “highly connective” accounts in a “Russia-linked” network. 20.The Virality Project helped pioneer the gauging of “disinformation” by audience response. If the post-vaccine death of a black woman named Drene Keyes in Virginia went unnoticed inspired mostly “anti-vaccine” comments on local media, it became a “disinformation” event. 21.VP warned against people “just asking questions,” implying it was a tactic “commonly used by spreaders of misinformation." It also described a "Worldwide Rally for Freedom planned over Telegram" as a disinformation event. 22."ALMOST ALWAYS REPORTABLE" It encouraged platforms to target people, not posts, using Minority Report-style “pre-crime” logic. Describing “repeat offenders” like Robert Kennedy, Jr., it spoke of a “large volume of content that is almost always reportable.” 23.VP was repeatedly, extravagantly wrong. In one email to Twitter on “misinformation,” it spoke of wanting to “hone in” on an “increasingly popular narrative about natural immunity.” 24.The VP in April 2021 mistakenly described “breakthrough” infections as “extremely rare events” that should not be inferred to mean “vaccines are ineffective.” 25.Later, when “the CDC changed its methodology for counting Covid-19 cases among vaccinated people,” only counting those resulting in hospitalization or death, VP complained that “anti-vaccine” accounts RFK Jr. and “WhatsHerFace” retweeted the story to suggest “hypocrisy.” 26.A few months later: “Breakthrough cases are happening.” 27.In a chilling irony, the VP ran searches for the term “surveillance state.” As an unaccountable state-partnered bureaucracy secretly searched it out, the idea that “vaccines are part of a surveillance state” won its own thoughtcrime bucket: “conspiracy.” 28.After about a year, on April 26, 2022, the VP issued a report calling for a “rumor-control mechanism to address nationally trending narratives,” and a “Misinformation and Disinformation Center of Excellence” to be housed within CISA, at the Department of Homeland Security. 29. The next day, April 27, 2022, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced in a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing that a “Disinformation Governance Board” had been created, to be headed by the singing censor, Nina Jankowitz. 30.Even in its final report, VP claimed it was misinformation to suggest the vaccine does not prevent transmission, or that governments are planning to introduce vaccine passports. Both things turned out to be true. 31.The Virality Project was specifically not based on “assertions of fact,” but public submission to authority, acceptance of narrative, and pronouncements by figures like Anthony Fauci. The project's central/animating concept was, "You can't handle the truth." 32. One of its four core partners, Pentagon-funded Graphika, explained in a report about “Fauxi” that because the public cannot be trusted to make judgements on its own, it must be shielded from truths that might undermine its faith in authority. 33. “This continual process of seeding doubt and uncertainty in authoritative voices,” Graphika wrote, in a report sent to Twitter, “leads to a society that finds it too challenging to identify what’s true or false.” 34.For this reason, the CDC-partnered project focused often on disinformation “events” involving Fauci, saying “release of Fauci’s emails foments distrust,” and deriding assertions he “misled the public.” 35.A Cleveland Clinic study showed previous infection offered the “same immunity” as the vaccine, but VP said discovery was susbservient to narrative: “Whether or not... scientific consensus is changing, ‘natural immunity’ is a key narrative… among anti-vaccine activists.” 36."OFTEN TRUE CONTENT" The Virality Project communications mirror those produced in the recent court case Louisiana vs Biden, which showed Facebook admitting to the WHO that it, too, was censoring true content. 37.From the start, Stanford explained the Virality Project would essentially continue the work of its 2020 Election Integrity Partnership. “The same JIRA system from the EIP is up and running,” they wrote. 38. In the last #TwitterFiles thread, we posted a video of EIP Director Alex Stamos describing that project as Stanford trying to “fill the gap of things the government couldn’t do” legally. (h/t Foundation for Freedom Online). 39.We also showed video in which Stamos introduced EIP Research Director Renee DiResta as having “worked for the CIA.” DiResta in 2021-2022 would be listed as a “Stanford scholar,” “leading” the Virality Project. 40. By October 2020, Stamos was hinting at the direction of the future Virality Project, telling a national cybersecurity conference that the “Anti-Disinformation” mission needed a new focus. 41.“We talk way too much about foreign…it's sexy, and it's fun, and it's a little bit cold warry,” Stamos said, adding the “vast majority” of problems were now domestic. “We have like an 80-20 breakdown... I think that needs to be flipped.” 42.VP’s partners: DOD-funded Graphika, the National Science Foundation funded Center for an Informed Public (CIP), the GEC-funded DFRLab, and the NYU Center for Social Media and Politics, or CSMaP. 43.VP would later say it partnered with “several government agencies,” including the Office of the Surgeon General and the CDC. It reportedly also worked with DHS’s CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) and GEC, among others. 44.To recap: America’s information mission went from counterterrorism abroad, to stopping “foreign interference” from reaching domestic audiences, to 80% domestic content, much of it true. The “Disinformation Governance Board” is out; but truth-policing is not. http://44.To 45. 3. The longest-tenured resident of the Dimeling reflects on life in her forever home CLEARFIELD, PA. – On any given afternoon the music of laughter can be heard bouncing off the walls, ornate woodwork, and marble floor of the stately lobby in the historic Dimeling Senior Residence. It’s a natural gathering place for those who live in the apartments in the seven-story structure, where they meet to share stories and spend time with good friends they’ve made while being a part of this senior living community. And when people get together at the Dimeling, it’s a safe bet that Carol Woods is holding court. She’s been doing it for 21 years. “Everybody asks me how long I’ve lived here, and I tell them 21 years. I tell them I’m the boss around here now,” Woods playfully proclaimed with a chuckle. She has lived in the building longer than any past or current resident and, with over two decades of seniority, has arguably spent more time at the Dimeling than anyone in the former hotel’s storied history. Woods, along with her brother and sister, moved into individual apartments at the Dimeling in 2002, just two years after it was reopened as a senior community by the Regis Group. “We loved this place as soon as we stepped inside the door,” Woods recalled. "This took my eye right away.” The 82-year-old revealed that her brother has since passed away, and her sister has moved into Mountain Laurel Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center due to increasing care needs. Through these changes and many years, Woods still finds comfort and happiness in her Dimeling community. “I’ve made great relationships here. All the residents here are nice people,” said Woods. “We visit in the lobby together. Everyone that comes in loves the lobby. We play bingo, we plant a flower garden in the spring.” Woods continued, “Phyllis is my best friend,” referring to Phyllis Bauman, a Dimeling resident of four years. Woods and Bauman met at the Dimeling and quickly became inseparable. She recalled, “I remember when she moved in, and I took a liking to Phyllis right away.” The pair was in the process of planning a trip to pick up chicken dinners to share with friends during bingo later in the evening when Bauman confirmed her pal’s status in the community. “She’s the boss,” Bauman quipped through a mischievous smile. “But, really, we met by just being here, and I’m grateful.” Woods keeps her own car in a provided lot at the Dimeling and is gone most mornings shopping or with her 94-year-old sister at Mountain Laurel where she helps her sibling dress, assists at mealtime, and does her sibling’s laundry. She remains active in every way, as does her sense of humor. “I like to read the paper to see if my obituary is in it,” she said when asked what activities she most enjoys. She also likes catching Pittsburgh Pirates games on TV. Prior to moving into the Dimeling, Woods spent 37 years living in the rural Mahaffey area. “We had to tend to the spring, fix anything that was broken,” she said, noting more reasons for her appreciation of living in an apartment downtown. “I’m happy where I am right here. We have a parking place for our cars out here, I can do my own cooking, my own laundry, my own housework. I have everything I need right here” Bauman echoed those sentiments saying, “I love it here. It’s close to everything – the YMCA, the library, banks, drug stores, and restaurants.” While living in Mahaffey, Woods spent many years working in the kitchen at the Pantall Hotel in Punxsutawney. She suggested this as another reason the former Dimeling Hotel feels like a natural fit for her. She said, “This is my home. It’s going to stay my home until God takes me.” Mature Resources Area Agency on Aging acquired the Dimeling Senior Residence in 2022. Originally designed and built in 1904 as a 120-room hotel by Pittsburgh-based Beezer Brothers, the Dimeling ceased operation as a hotel in 1977. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1980. It remained empty until the renovation in 2000 transformed the building by combing and expanding guest rooms into the present 33 one- or two-bedroom apartments, complete with full kitchens, baths, and living areas, creating housing for individuals 55 years of age or older. According to an October 2019 article in the Progress, the Dimeling was once the center of Clearfield’s social scene and many celebrities stayed at the Dimeling including big band musicians Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, actor Clark Gable, radio personality Paul Harvey, Olympian and football star Jim Thorpe, former Pennsylvania Governor John Kinley Tener, heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey, labor leader John L. Lewis, and “the tallest man in the world,” Robert Pershing Wadlow. For more information, call 814-765-2696 or email info@matureresources.life The longest-term resident of the Dimeling Senior Residence Carol Woods, right, can be seen with her friend Phyllis Bauman, left, most afternoons visiting with other residents in the lobby.

  6. 🐻 Ever wonder what life is like in a black bear den? ❄️ Each winter, the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s black bear program manager and wildlife biologist heads into Penn’s Woods with a team to locate known female black bear dens. They find them by tracking their radio collars. 🐻 Females, (aka sows), typically give birth in the den every other year in January. The cubs stay with the female throughout the summer and den with her the following winter. In the spring, the cubs, (now considered yearlings), will go off on their own and she will breed again and start the cycle over. 🩺 Once the team arrives to the den, the mother is tranquilized and immobile, and is given a health exam. They check her collar for fit and functionality. The cubs are also given a health exam and ear tags. Data is recorded, including the number of cubs. 📡 The following year, the biologist can relocate the female and see how many cubs survived their first year. 🧐 Last year, the team discovered something very rare when visiting a yearling den. They found the female had one yearling and two newborn cubs. (Unfortunately, one cub was deceased). *This is very rare in the bear world, and those who study bears don’t quite know why this occasionally happens. We believe this situation was because the female and yearling were separated the previous summer while the yearling was a cub, and during that separation, the female bred with a male and then somehow reconnected with the cub before the denning season. It’s one or the other- yearlings or cubs, not both! 📝 This phenomenon has only been documented one other time in Pennsylvania! Attached are some photos from that den. You will see one of the cubs, the yearling, and the female. The female and yearling are immobilized tranquilized in the photos. 📸 Thank you to the Pennsylvania black bear biologist (pictured), Emily Carrollo, for the photos and story.
  7. One Thing, Jesus Christ. Stations of the Cross Series, Station #6, Friday, March 17th by Fr. Ben Daghir & Luke Daghir Editor's Note: Fr. Ben Daghir and Luke Daghir will have 14 articles based upon the stations of the cross. The 14th article will conclude on Easter Sunday. Article: The 6th Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. The name Veronica is worth mentioning as it means “true icon” or “true image.” In Jesus, we truly see the face of the Father and the true image of humanity. It is only in Jesus where humanity can properly see itself. Pope St. John Paul II often stated, “without the Gospels, humanity remains a dramatic question with no adequate answer.” Jesus perfectly reflects the face of the Father’s mercy and the face of the authentic human person. Veronica wipes the face of the true icon, the true image which is the face of Jesus Christ. “We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you; because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.” ======================== Luke Daghir is a seminarian for the Diocese of Erie from St. Marys, Pa. He currently studies at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore.

  18. One Thing, Jesus Christ. Stations of the Cross Series, Station #5, Wednesday, March 15th by Fr. Ben Daghir & Luke Daghir Editor's Note: Fr. Ben Daghir and Luke Daghir will have 14 articles based upon the stations of the cross. The 14th article will conclude on Easter Sunday. Article: The 5th Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry his cross. We don’t know much about Simon of Cyrene. He exits the Gospel narrative as quickly as he enters it. Yet, there is something about Simon of Cyrene which has engaged the imagination of Christians since the early Church. The encounter between Simon of Cyrene and Jesus is captured in two Gospel accounts (Mark 15:21 and Luke 23:26). We read in the Gospel of Mark, “And they [the Roman soldiers] compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country…to carry his cross” (Mk 15:21). Pope John Paul II on Good Friday at the Roman Colosseum in 2003 reflected on this encounter between Jesus and Simon of Cyrene. The Holy Father posed these questions: “How long did Simon of Cyrene continue to resent being forced into this?” “How long did Simon of Cyrene continue to walk beside this condemned man?” The Holy Father’s questions challenge us to place ourselves in the footsteps of Simon of Cyrene. We don’t know what Simon of Cyrene was feeling or thinking. We don’t know how his life might have been changed. We don’t know if there was an exchange of words between Jesus and Simon of Cyrene. We do know that Simon of Cyrene carries Jesus’s cross. We also know that the Gospel of Mark is all about discipleship and the distinctive mark of a disciple is one who “denies himself, takes up his cross, and follows me” (Mark 8:34). The narrative of Mark’s Gospel tells us that the Apostles have fled from the cross. The night before Simon of Cyrene carried Jesus’s cross, the Apostles were with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas then betrays Jesus as he arrives with a crowd carrying swords and clubs (Mark 14:43). Then, we read one of the saddest lines in Scripture…the Apostles deserted Jesus and fled (Mark 14:50). As Simon of Cyrene, a mere passer-by, is carrying Christ’s cross, the Apostles are nowhere to be found. The Gospel of Mark challenges us with this thought, “Shouldn’t the Apostles be carrying their cross alongside Jesus?” The second verse in which we read about Simon of Cyrene is found in the Gospel of Luke, “And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus” (Lk 23:26). The Gospel of Luke mentions an interesting detail: Simon of Cyrene carried the cross behind Jesus. What was Simon of Cyrene looking at while he carried Jesus’s cross? Was he looking at the ground in disgust and annoyance? Was he looking at the Roman soldiers in hatred and fear? Was he looking at the crowd in humiliation and embarrassment? Was he looking at Jesus Christ in front of him? Did he follow the bloody footsteps marked by Christ in front of him? Did he know that those footsteps lead to eternal life? Can we find ourselves in the position of Simon of Cyrene? “We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you; because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.” ======================== Fr. Ben Daghir is a priest for the Diocese of Erie. He is a graduate of Elk County Catholic High School in Saint Marys, Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, and St. Mary's Seminary & University in Baltimore, Maryland. He considers writing one of his favorite hobbies.
