One Thing, Jesus Christ Fr. Ben Daghir Will Post Weekly Articles HERE Every Monday! Article 6 - November 14th, 2022 by Fr. Ben Daghir Toby Keith is famous for his catchy American lyrics. One of his songs from the early 2000’s has become prophetic. The song is entitled “I Wanna Talk About Me” and depicts a man who is tired of hearing about his significant other’s extended family, work, friends, dreams and much more. Here is the popular part of the song, “I wanna talk about me, wanna talk about I. Wanna talk about number one, oh my me my. What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see. I like talking about you, you, you, you usually; but occasionally, I wanna talk about me.” I could not think of a clearer mantra for today - “I wanna talk about me.” In the spiritual life, things go haywire the moment one’s focus selfishly turns inward. St. Augustine called this incurvatus in se (being caved in on the self). Humanity’s greatest weakness has always been when it caves in on itself. The Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, in his work The Divine Comedy depicts a scene when he enters the depths of hell. He sees Satan flapping his wings in a hell that is frozen. Satan is stuck in himself, consumed in his own little world, and the devil doesn’t even notice when Dante is in his presence. The devil’s mantra is obvious - “I wanna talk about me.” Dante’s point about hell is also evident - hell caves in on itself (incurvatus in se). What does the Biblical tradition teach us about incurvatus in se - the “I wanna talk about me” mentality? The Bible is not interested in the boring narrative of self-promotion, of how I made myself, or of how I define myself. It has zero time for the “me, myself, and I” mantra. We see the exact opposite of the incurvatus in se (“I wanna talk about me”) mentality in the Virgin Mary. The Angel Gabriel greeted Mary and stated, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus” (Luke 1:31). Mary is troubled, but she does not consume herself in her own wants and needs. Instead, Mary is open to God’s grace and responds, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Mary’s entire life is open to new horizons, new possibilities, and a new adventure. Such is the beauty of life when one is not caved in on the self. Next, we read of a beautiful encounter when Mary greets her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth says to her, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-44). How, then, does Mary respond? Mary gives praise to God, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord” (Luke 1:46). Mary then continues to praise God because He is a merciful and strong Savior who remembers His promises. Mary talks about God, not herself. The incurvatus in se - “I wanna talk about me” mentality is nowhere to be found. The contemporary story of “I wanna talk about me” in which I am the author, I am starring in it, I am in control of the plot, I decide which characters are or are not in my story, etc. is not that interesting. It is a boring narrative that is excessively told. On the other hand, the story of salvation in which God is both present and active is something worth talking about. FIX IS IN: Arizona Ballots Make Stop at Runbeck Printing Company to Scan Ballot Envelopes Before They Are Sent to County — WITH NO OBSERVERS By Jim Hoft Published November 12, 2022 at 11:05am Arizona Ballots Make Stop at Runbeck Printing Company to Sort Ballots Before They Are Sent to County — WITH NO OBSERVERS Every mail-in ballot that is returned in the county is sent to Runbeck first. Runbeck is scanning the Maricopa ballots before they are sent to the Maricopa County Elections Center. Maricopa County is the only jurisdiction in the country that picks up completed ballots at USPS Processing Distribution Center, but doesn’t bring them back to the election department or tabulation center. Maricopa County picks up mail-in ballots and takes them directly to its print vendor Runbeck Election Services, which is headquartered in Phoenix. Every single completed mail-in ballot, whether mailed or dropped off at a polling place, goes to Runbeck. All mail-in ballots collected on election day, and the previous few days, are sitting at Runbeck headquarters. Maricopa has no idea how many ballots are in their possession because the ballots are at their print vendor. Maricopa allegedly uses Runbeck because they have “high-speed scanners.” Runbeck scans the ballots in batches to create a digital image of each envelope signature area. This batch of images is given to the Maricopa tabulation center (MCTEC) for poll worker review. MCTEC notifies Runbeck if any of those signatures don’t match. Runbeck separates out those bad envelopes, then delivers both sets of these envelopes by van to MCTEC, which is 6 miles away. MCTEC then opens the envelopes and starts the tabulation process. This “batch” process is repeated until all “mail-in” ballot envelopes are scanned at Runbeck. This takes 10-12 days after every general election, and ballots envelopes are delivered each day by Runbeck vans. Runbeck uses the Bluecrest Vantage mail processing machines to scan these ballot envelopes. This machine can process 40-50,000 ballots an hour. These machines can also automatically scan the ballot signatures using embedded commercial-grade check cashing signature software from Parascript. But Maricopa continues to use its slow manual “batch” process of reviewing signatures. These Vantage machines cost $1.06 million each, Detroit just purchased one in early 2022. Maricopa could purchase two of these machines and process roughly 90,000 ballots an hour in-house. But Maricopa continues to re-sign contracts with Runbeck, which prevents them from bringing all this in-house. This is a travesty.

As reported earlier, the FTX crypto company gave at least $40 million to Democrat candidates and causes in the midterms. Sam Bankman-Fried is Biden’s second biggest donor. In addition to this, Daily Caller lists many of the lawmakers who Sam Bankman Fried was bankrolling who oversaw the institution that was supposed to keep on eye on companies like FTX: Sam Bankman-Fried, prolific Democratic donor and ex-CEO of now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, funded the campaigns of members of Congress overseeing the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), one of the key bodies tasked with regulating the crypto industry and the subject of Bankman-Fried’s aggressive lobbying. Bankman-Fried’s FTX is currently under investigation by the CFTC and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after Bankman-Fried allegedly moved $10 billion in client assets from his crypto exchange to his trading firm Alameda Research, and a liquidity crisis at his exchange which prompted the company to file for bankruptcy. However, prior to the agency’s probe, Bankman-Fried aggressively courted the CFTC – and funded several key lawmakers charged with overseeing the agency, pouring cash into their campaign coffers. FTX also happens to be related to Ukraine. The far-left Washington Post reported on March 3 that Ukraine was dealing in crypto. The Ukrainian government has gathered more than $42 million in cryptocurrency donations since Saturday, plus digital artwork including a limited edition worth roughly $200,000, according to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic. The challenge is how the country cashes in on these assets to fund its war needs. Then less than a week later FTX made the news for involving itself in Ukraine: Amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the CEO of FTX, Sam Bankman Fried has come forward to help a crypto donation project. He humbly announced that FTX will be supporting the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance and other communities in collecting crypto donations for the country. The Ukrainian government has received over $60 million in crypto donations from all over the world. FTX’s CEO, Sam Bankman Fried highlighted that the war in Ukraine has been dragging on. The country is in full need of humanitarian help and access to global financial infrastructure. He also called attention to sanctions and crypto during this kind of situation. He indicated that crypto exchanges should enforce sanctions announced by the government seriously. FTX has stressed across all of its regulatory and policy efforts, active coordination and communication with regulators and policymakers is crucial to ensuring that laws and rules achieve their intended outcome, reads a letter by FTX Pointing out the urgency to help the nation Sam Bankman announced that the FTX team is honored to support the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance in simplifying the donation process. The word is now out. The Democrats sent tens of billions to Ukraine and then laundered this money back to Democrat pockets and funds in the US. Black Walnuts for Health and Profit! Cheryl J. Shenkle November 2022 Ask any Pennsylvania elder who has had to forage for food or go hungry as a youngster, and you’ll uncover someone with a deep respect for the flavorful, gnarly fruits called American/Eastern Black Walnuts. They are native only to Eastern United States and Southern Canada. For nutritional and health value, Black Walnuts contain higher levels of antioxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids and other healthy compounds than English Walnuts. Think of it, Black Walnuts are free, healthier, grow as natives in our area and are a potential source of a hefty future income. They are a renewable source not to be discredited! I cringe when hearing of landowners who have had their Black Walnut trees cut down and hauled away in order to not have the nuts or leaves in their lawns. Granted they are better suited to a meadow area, but their lumber commands some of the highest prices in the commercial market. Line a path with walnut chips and it will stay clear for many seasons. It should not be used near gardens or planting beds because some plants are very sensitive to the allelopathic substance in Walnut trees called Juglone. The area under a Walnut tree often stays well-cleared due to this effect. Careful planting will make your trees a treasure rather than a problem. Planted orchards can be an investment in the future if tended properly with large diameter straight logs valued at hundreds if not thousands of dollars. The elderly gentleman who sold us our property came from a family life of farming and harvesting both commercial and wild foods till he left our area for a railroad job. On retiring, he came back to the farm to live out his days. As neighbors, my children and I listened to many of his stories about treasures to be found on this old farm, some acres of which by now had been turned into the housing sub-division where we lived. From his descriptions of how they created their own electricity and collected their own water, to descriptions of the interesting employees who cared for the needs of the family and farm hands, everything was fascinating. They figured out how to live off of their own land. Unfortunately as time passed, and fewer hands were to be found, with family leaving the farm for jobs as happens today, the farm laid fallow for years but was eventually rented out to other farmers who cleared many of the trees in order to use machinery to harvest larger crops. Most of the nut trees were lost in that time. As George was reminiscing about long ago Christmases, he talked about one of his saddest memories. For years he had trekked to now gone nut and fruit trees on the property. He almost drooled when talking about cakes made with all kinds of nuts. Black Walnut was his favorite, but he anticipated a Hickory Nut cake which his mother promised to make. It was usual for friends and family to stop by unannounced for meals. The more the merrier, and many times they came bearing foods of their own to share. He had picked a huge bucket of Hickory Nuts earlier to shell over a week’s time to get enough of the nut meat for a never before tasted, but smelled baking, Hickory Nut cake. It was a dream smell! Just as supper was set out, a family came with several members and the table was filled by the adult members of each family. Kids ate in the second shift, and by that time the cake was gone! The cake took three very well cleaned cups of Hickory Nuts which is quite a job which he never attempted again. The kids and I decided to make him that specific cake as soon as the nuts fell, were collected and shelled with a brick. It took months till it was all accomplished. Everything the kids shelled had to be carefully picked over for shell fragments but we finally had enough. The cake was delivered and devoured by the adults who came for dinner that evening, but this time George got his share! Black Walnuts, including Hickory Nuts are our Pennsylvania history but most of that knowledge and appreciation has been lost. In the current era of food and health worries, we have a treasure of healthy and delicious ingredients to add to our diets. Although we have bounteous amounts of empty nutritional foods at cheap prices, easy to get, but of no real value to our bodies, begin planning to plant quality trees and shrubs on even a small property. Every little bit of super nutritious foods helps, especially if it’s basically free.
