  8. event = Downtown Beautification/Neighborhood Meeting date = February 19, 2014 time = 6:00 pm Message = Beautification Efforts Ramping Up in DuBois DuBois - The Downtown Group is re-vamping its Design Committee with a new focus and a new partner; the Downtown Neighbors United group. This new group will now be known as the Downtown Beautification Committee. To launch this new partnership, the group is meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 19th at 6pm at Slugger's Tavern next door to Shankel's Pharmacy. Some previous accomplishments include four large community art projects, window display contests and workshops, large-item trash pick-up, annual spring clean-up, several building painting projects, facade grant assistance, installation of a pocket park, Christmas decorating contest and the planting of many of the flower barrels downtown. The group would like to create more emphasis on historic properties, create an award to recognize historically sensitive renovations, develop an "Artist in Residence" program, improve vacant window displays, host workshops taught by local craftsmen on historic restoration techniques, create a list of preservation-minded contractors, work with developers and building owners to improve the housing stock and host a historic house tour. The focus of all of these efforts will be cultivating an appreciation of living, working and spending time in the downtown DuBois hub. These urban amenities include cultural attractions like the Reitz Theater and the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art, good restaurants and bars, places to worship, great places to shop, attend a class, scheduling a salon appointment, going to the library, enjoying a great cup of coffee, getting a prescription filled, car parts-service-gas, doctor or dentist appointments and a whole range of services and products too numerous to mention. According to a committee statement, "We're rolling-up our sleeves to get some great projects started! If you own an old house or a business downtown, we'll be working on various improvement projects with your help. We need all types of volunteers; contractors and craftsmen, artists, gardeners, brain-stormers, general labor, article writers and anyone who cares deeply about the community and making sure our older neighborhoods are welcoming in every way." Any questions on this initiative, please call Julie Stewart at 591-2570.
