DEP: Canadian wildfire smoke creating unhealthy pollution levels for all Pennsylvanians Smoke from the wildfires in Canada is creating unhealthy pollution levels for the whole state on Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said. The DEP issued a code red air quality alert for Wednesday. Everyone is encouraged to limit their outdoor activities, especially children, older people and those with respiratory conditions. A code red is when the air is considered unhealthy and while the general public may experience health effects due to this level of pollution, sensitive groups will feel greater effects. Northerly winds will bring more waves of wildfire smoke into the region causing hazy skies and fine particle matters will be elevated to or near unhealthy range as a result. Residents are asked to avoid open burning and using gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

Jacquelyn F. “Jackie” Bowers, age 91 of Reynoldsville, PA died Monday, June 5, 2023 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital. Born on June 22, 1931 in Reynoldsville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Viola (Palaggo) Fusco. Jackie retired from S & T Bank in Reynoldsville as Assistant Branch Manager after over 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Marys Roman Catholic Church where she was a member of the Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a former volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile. Jackie enjoyed reading, bingo, gambling and going out to eat. She looked forward to any social gathering, and always wore her “bling”. Jackie was a devoted mother, and Nonnie. She had great faith in God and always held concern for her family and friends. She shared in their sorrows as well as their triumphs. Jackie is survived by her children (Debbie Lyle and her husband Tim, Diane Flock and her husband Doug, and David Bowers and his wife Beth, all of Reynoldsville, PA), eight “favorite” grandchildren Carrie Webb (Dave), Ryan Lyle (Blanca), Michael Flock (Ali), Andrew Flock (Emily), Nathan Flock (Maitland), Shannon Blakley (Ben), Joshua Bowers (Kristy) and Nicholas Bowers, nine great grandchildren (with three more on the way) Parker, Blanca, Hadley, Kennedy, Blake, Rocco, Connor, Morgan and Memphis, a sister-in-law Madeline Fusco; nephews Steven McDonald, Scott McDonald and Marc Fusco, and many very special cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son Michael, sister Christine McDonald, brother-in-law John McDonald and brother Francis L. Fusco. There will be no public visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 17, 2022 at 10 AM from St. Marys Roman Catholic Church in Reynoldsville, with Father Edward Walk as celebrant. Tina Anne Cunningham, age 67 of DuBois, PA died Monday, June 5, 2023 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital. Born on February 11, 1956 in Louisville, KY, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Ruby R. (Finley) Arnett. She married Harry L. Cunningham in 1979. He survives. Tina was a homemaker and had worked as an insurance agent for Heacock Insurance in Lakeland, FL. While in Florida, Tina enjoyed going to cars shows with her husband and their 1935 Ford Coupe. Above all, she loved being with her family. She is survived by one daughter (Kristie Botkins and her husband Dustin of DuBois, PA), three grandchildren (Jaden, Sophia and Lyndon), two great grandchildren (Issabella and Talia) and a great grandchild due in November. Charlotte F. McCluskey, age 80 of DuBois, PA, an amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died Friday, June 2, 2023 at Christ the King Manor. She was born on December 12, 1942 in DuBois, PA, the daughter of the late Michael and Angeline C. (Yonushonis) Pusch. Charlotte graduated from DuBois Area High School before leading a life that would take her all over the United States including living the majority of her adult life in Maryland and then Mission Viejo, CA before retiring in the DuBois area. She graduated college with a degree in Geology from California State Fullerton University and worked in Human Resources for a company in Irvine, CA. Charlotte was a very kind, caring person who would do absolutely anything for her family and close friends. She will be forever remembered by those close to her. She was very well known for her incredible cross-stitching which was praised by many. She is survived by her three children; Matt McCluskey, Fred McCluskey, and Erin McCluskey, along with six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and one brother Michael Pusch. Ben Daghir Article: Kelly Clarkson’s 2011 song “What Doesn’t Kill You” has a very popular line: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” The lyrics: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Stand a little taller. Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone. What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter, footsteps even lighter. Doesn’t mean I’m over ‘cause you’re gone. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stronger; just me, myself, and I. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” These lyrics echo the thoughts of an unexpected philosopher. Friedrich Nietzsche…He was a 19th century German philosopher who once stated, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” Nietzsche was very influential in our contemporary culture, especially among atheists. Nietzsche is well-known for his statement, “God is dead. We killed him. I am not proposing that Kelly Clarkson’s song is trying to promote the philosophy of Nietzsche. In fact, I think it is a song about a basic truth - We grow through difficulties in life. Nietzsche believed that Christianity had the wrong values. It held up the lowly, the mighty were cast down from their thrones, the hungry were fed, and the rich were sent away empty. In other words, the wrong people were victorious within Christianity, and it was preventing humanity from achieving its full potential. Therefore, the whole system of objective truth and moral values needed a new foundation for Nietzsche. This “new foundation” would be built upon “will power.” Humanity could achieve its own dream and pave a new future through the Übermensch (superior human). God was simply getting in the way; it was time for humanity to take control. Several German political and military leaders in the 1920s and 1930s interpreted Nietzsche’s less than 40-year-old philosophy and tried to apply it. The Nazi Regime became the Übermensch. The Nazis organized a systematic, inhumane regime which was built upon a basic philosophy: truth and morals are found in whoever has the stronger power. Christianity interprets the words, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” under a much different rubric. What is the symbol of Christianity? A cross. For Catholics, it is a crucifix which depicts Christ on the cross. In other words, Christianity holds high what killed Jesus Christ. Notice, there is a massive assumption which undergirds Nietzsche's phrase “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” Death is the end game for him. One must be strengthened and equipped under circumstances less than death, but it cannot be death itself because that’s the end. On the other hand, consider Jesus’s words in John’s Gospel, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” (John 12:24). Christ’s words imply a journey, an adventure, and an abundance of fruit which comes through death. Death is not the end for Jesus Christ. The next time you hear Kelly Clarkson sing “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” consider how Christ demands and promises so much more. ======================== Fr.
