  1. Warm weather leads to early maple syrup production Sunday, January 22nd 2017 FRIEDENS -- It's only January, but maple syrup production has already begun in some parts of Somerset County. At Baer Bros. Maple Camp, it's time to start tapping trees and collecting sap. Mike Lynch owns the business with his wife. "This warm weather, there's been no freezes, so we decided to tap and get started collecting sap now, in case the weather doesn't turn cold and stay cold," Lynch said. Warm weather the last two days had his family getting to work. Thirteen-year-old Reagan loves being in the woods. "I've been doing this, since, well, whenever I could try to keep up," Reagan said. His dad says right now, they're getting a gallon or two of sap per minute. "What I've checked in the last week with producers, is anywhere from 60 to 90 gallons to make a gallon of maple syrup, so it's not very sweet," Lynch said. He said the low sugar content means it takes more sap to make maple syrup. There are thousands of feet of piping. In all, there are about 3,500 trees. "We probably have 800 taps out of our 5,000 in, so we're going to slowly work at it this week,

  9. Florida rules to let woman keep costume-wearing, ATV-riding pet alligator Dec. 21, 2016 at 2:31 PM Rambo the alligator has reason to feel the Christmas spirit after Florida wildlife officials decided to let him stay with his owner in Lakeland. Screenshot: WFTS-TV LAKELAND, Fla., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Wildlife officials in Florida have ruled to allow a woman to keep her ATV-riding pet alligator after months of uncertainty about the reptile's future. Mary Thorn of Lakeland was told by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission earlier this year that her alligator, Rambo, would have to be moved to a larger property or surrendered to authorities. Thorn, who has had Rambo for more than a decade, said the commission changed state regulations to require alligators of her pet's size -- nearly 6 feet long -- to be kept on properties with at least 2.5 acres of land. Thorn said Rambo, who was rescued as a baby after being kept in dark and cramped conditions, would have difficulty in a sanctuary setting because he is accustomed to life with people and dogs and he has a sensitivity to light. "He's like my son. He's my family," Thorn said earlier this year. "He's not a normal gator. He has never been a normal gator." The FWC notified Thorn this month that it had accepted her request for them to make an exception to the gator-keeping rules due to Rambo's unique situation. The ruling came with some strict conditions, including a ban on showcasing the alligator in public. Thorn previously took Rambo to educational and charity events to teach children about the animals. "They could have a gator that they can come up to and touch and feel so they don't do it in the wild and they don't break the law," Thorn told WFTS-TV. Rambo has become something of a viral celebrity since his story was first reported on, thanks in part to his collection of costumes and affinity for humorous poses, including sitting atop an ATV. 11. Rare white fox captured in Massachusetts may have fur trade ancestry Dec. 9, 2016 at 12:10 PM FRANKLIN, Mass., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Massachusetts wildlife officials said a rare white fox captured after weeks of sightings likely has ancestry in the fur trading industry and was once someone's pet. Franklin residents first reported seeing the unusual fox wandering their neighborhoods about a month ago and they reported the animal would frequently sit on their porches and approach humans for food. "We talked to the animal control officer in Franklin and learned people were feeding the animal, so we decided to remove the animal," Dave Wattles, a state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife biologist, told the Boston Globe. Wattles said officials were also concerned the fox could breed with native red foxes and could face hardships when winter falls. Wattles said an animal control officer captured the fox on a commercial property Thursday morning. He said the captured animal appears to be a mix of fox breeds and likely has ancestry from the fur trading business. "In the past, the fur trade business would try to breed foxes together to get the most valuable furs," Wattles said. "The coloration of this animal matches very closely with color phases that were intentionally bred by the fur industry to produce desired pelts. This was achieved by breeding arctic fox (which are white) with red fox or gray fox," Wattles told Wicked Local Franklin. He said the fox's behavior indicates it was kept as a pet and either escaped or was released into the wild by its owner. "It's very healthy, and it's a beautiful animal," Wattles said. "It just isn't wild." He said the fox will be cared for at a sanctuary for exotic animals and will not be released back into the wild. "It is not a native animal of Massachusetts and we would not want it to be in the wild," he said. "It has genes of arctic fox, not a native species to Massachusetts or our region. We would not want those genes to be mixed into our native red or gray fox populations. Additionally, given its captive past, it likely would not be able to survive on its own in the wild." 12. Missing Florida dog found in New Jersey three years later Nov. 29, 2016 at 11:28 AM FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- A missing Maltese Pomeranian mix from Florida was reunited with her owner after turning up in New Jersey three years later. Bill Gerstein of Fort Lauderdale shared a photo with his newly found dog, Bella, to a Facebook page dedicated to finding the beloved pet. "Almost three years later, miracles do really happen," a post on the Facebook page said. "Bella was turned in as a stray in New Jersey. Will be returning home shortly." Gerstein told North Jersey News Bella disappeared while playing outside of his law office in Dec. 2013. "It was a Friday the 13th," he said. "I remember that. She would go out back and then come back in when she was done outside, and that day, I was distracted. I went back inside, realized about an hour later, 'Oh my God, where's the dog?' So I went out back with my partner and other merchants from the area, and there was just no sign of her." Almost three years later Ashley Abregu found the missing dog wandering around in poor condition with knotted fur and covered in dirt. "I found her by herself rolling in dirt near my house so I took her with me and she was just a sweetheart. I wanted to keep her until we found the owners but unfortunately where I live there is a no pet policy," she said. "She looked as if who ever took her was not taking good care of her, she was very knotty and dirty." Abregu brought Bella to Paterson Animal Shelter in New Jersey where her microchip helped them get into contact with Gerstein. "We found out that the dog was stolen from Fort Lauderdale and the lawyer that owned the dog called his friend in Fair Lawn that picked the dog up and took her to the groomer," Animal Control officer John DeCando said. Gerstein was ultimately reunited with his beloved Bella and said after a brief adjustment period she quickly became part of the family again. "They had her in a crate, and when I got there and got to see her she was shaking and kissing me for like 10 minutes," he said. "She was a bit shaken, but she's right back in the swing of things now. She recognized everyone, and now the kids fight over whose bed she will sleep in." 18. Snake bite swells dog's head to three times its normal size Nov. 8, 2016 at 1:47 PM FAIRMONT, W.Va., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A dog at a West Virginia animal shelter is going viral thanks to a post-snake bite photo of his head swollen to three times its normal size. Pet Helpers, Inc., of Fairmont, posted a photo to Facebook of a miserable-looking beagle mix named Logar suffering from severe swelling in his head after a bite from a venomous snake. The shelter shared pictures showing Logar looking back to normal with a comparatively tiny-seeming head only one day after being treated at an animal hospital. "Hard to believe the last picture in the group is really the same dog. For those that are not aware Logar came to us after suffering a snake bite. He is one lucky pup!" the post said. The saga of Logar took place in September, but the photos went viral this week after being posted on Reddit. 19. Livescience.com November 8, 2016, 11:44 AM Why are thousands of giant snowballs piling up on a Siberian beach? Preparing for an epic snowball fight this winter? The best place to stock up on ammo may be a beach in Siberia, where thousands of huge, perfectly round snowballs are piling up, according to news reports. But where are these frozen orbs coming from? Villagers near the Gulf of Ob in Siberia discovered the snowballs along an 11-mile stretch of the beach, reported the Siberian Times. The snowballs range from the size of a tennis ball (about 2.7 inches) to almost 3 feet across. Though they look strange, the orbs are naturally occurring, experts say.
