The season of “unlocking” continues up here in Tioga County. We are on the New York border so we get it last when it comes to spring and summer. But its coming!! If you look closely you can see that there are vast parts of the PA Grand Canyon that still don’t have leafbud yet, but some of our other northern hardwoods are out. This is Colton Point State Park and Lookout. My hubby and I went up the other night, sat on the bench, and watched the clouds and shadows move through. With the golden light I figured we’d see more color… I even saw my first warbler up there… a pine warbler. That’s a sure sign of spring. In a few weeks, we’ll be in full bloom! Can’t wait. The Gospel of Mark states, “As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Then they left their nets and followed him” (Mark 1:16-18). Simon and Andrew saw themselves as fishermen, but Jesus sees more within them. Jesus wants to build upon their fishing experiences and form them for something greater. There is a lie which indicates that once one drops his nets to follow Jesus, he never picks those nets back up again. This lie is nonsense! Jesus builds upon all our experiences, skills, abilities, hobbies, gifts, relationships, and talents. Grace builds upon nature. Like Simon and Andrew, we may see ourselves as mere fishermen in shallow waters. Jesus, on the other hand, sees more within us. Jesus calls us to greater adventure. He challenges us “put out into deep water and lower the nets for a catch” (Luke 5:4). Jesus’s challenge to Simon and Andrew excites them more than any previous fishing opportunity. Once Peter and Andrew step out of their tiny boats and drop their empty nets, they open themselves to the grandness of God. Jesus always calls us to deeper waters and greater adventure. The question is never “is He calling me on an adventure?” but rather “Am I willing to go and follow Him?” ======================== Fr. Ben Daghir is a priest for the Diocese of Erie. Rehm, Jr. of DuBois, PA (Treasure Lake) and Spring Hill, FL, formerly of Indiana, PA passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson, FL. Born on July 4, 1930 in Indiana, PA, he was the son of the late Robert and Twila (Sloan) Rehm. On September 25, 1953 he married his wife of 69 years, Dorothy (Kromer) Rehm. She survives. He is also survived by one daughter Susan Rehm of Phoenix, AZ, one son Richard Rehm of Fort Worth, TX, three granddaughters; Megan Glover (Brandon) of Waco, TX, Courtney Klesel (Jason) of Dallas, TX and Rachel Rehm of Dallas, TX. Bob was a 1948 graduate of the Indiana High School and a 1952 graduate of Indiana University. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, received a commission, and was assigned to a construction battalion in Korea where he was involved with the restoration of a school and a medical clinic at a small Korean village that had been destroyed in the war. Upon his release from the service, he became employed by the Pennsylvania Electric Company where he spent the remainder of his working life. He filled various positions, starting as an Engineering Assistant in Punxsutawney, PA and ending his career in 1990 as the Division Director in the Clearfield Central Division office. While in Clearfield, he was active in community work. He was a member and past president of the hospital board , a member and past president of the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Clearfield Foundation, United Way Board and DuBois Educational Foundation. Bob was an avid golfer for over 40 years with three holes-in-one to his credit. He especially enjoyed both courses at Treasure Lake. He also liked water skiing and working around the yard. His very favorite hobby for over 50 years was his music. He was an accomplished trumpet player and was active with several groups over the years. He was Principal Trumpeter with the Jaffa Temple Concert and Marching Band for over 25 years. Bob was Methodist by faith. Fraternally, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Punxsutawney, Coudersport Consistory, Jaffa Shrine in Altoona and the Jaffa Jesters Court #70. He was also a member of the Clearfield Elks and the DuBois American Legion. There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Burial will take place in Morningside Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Erie Shriner’s Hospital, checks to Jaffa Shrine earmarked for Erie Shriner’s Hospital, Broad Avenue, PO Box 1984, Altoona, PA 16601.
