Plant Care
Does not usually need staking. Best in a moist soil, but will tolerate short periods of dry. Will tolerate quite a bit of wet. Easy to divide in spring or fall every 3-4 years. Responds well to "pinching" like a mum to promote bushiness. Disease and pest free.

I've seen a plant growing in Penfield and on the way to the Gateway Humane Society after Falls Creek that looks like a huge sunflower that never flowers.
Anyone know what they are? I've wondered for years, and I think they almost have to be a hardy perennial.
where is it located in Penfield???

thats the descrition I got last year. It hasn't gotten any flowers, but it only started growing there last summer. Now it is laying on the bank!!! We don't need a tree that tall planted in shallow ground. I could just picture the wind blowing it over onto my brand new car!!!!!

What is a Cucumber Tree?
it's in the 3rd picture of the bank. We pulled it out tonight. Not sure if it is a cucumber or a sasafrass tree. Short fat root system.

the pic with the skunks in it? that is sedum, it should be as big as the one behind the yucca in the second pic, but the dog keeps knocking it down. I also have a white bleeding heart right behind the little skunk on the left rock and the dog keeps that one knocked down also.
The plants in the rock garden are, cactus, honeysuckle, sedum, yucca, russian sage, day lily, coral bells, minature rose bush, white bleeding heart, and the big shrubs are rose of sharon.

yes, if it is a larger flower bed. If you have a small one, find the mini's. If you can't find the mini's I would dig them up about every 3 years and quarter them. They do get big as you can tell at the Small plaza by Sarvey's.

Where can I buy them?
amost any garden shop. heck, they should be going on clearance soon if not already. I got mine at My Garden in Brookville, but that was about 10 yrs ago. I know the valley rainbow sells them, also lowes.

Yah, if you have a problem with bees being around, you definetly don't want one of them. Mine has bumble bees swarming at it all the time...made it hard to trim it up the other day.
ya shouldn't trim it till fall!!! cut it back to about 6-8 inches high

Books on Gardening in PA
in Go Gardening and Nature
Posted
I buy any gardening book that has to do with PA. I also buy the farmers Almanac every year and know whether it's a good year to plant things or not. It nailed it this year ... rain, rain, rain. So I didn't plant a garden or any flowers at all. Didn't even buy a hanging basket. I also have books on bulbs, perrenials, annuals, tree's, shrubs, and houseplants including bonsai tree's. You can never have too many books!!! At least thats what I tell the hubby
