  1. My green peppers always do very well.  I usally buy california wonders.  I had a bumper crop last year.  I can't remember what I got this year but the plants look sickly.  I don't think I am going to have a good.  I bought a new variety last year, I think something girl, and they produced tons of peppers and early.  I grew jalapeno a couple of years and had to many to use that I was giving them away.  I was making poppers with them.  Hungarian hot was another great producer.  I am growing plants for my brother this year.  I will just take a few of his and he can have the rest.  I always have a good turnout of green beans too.

  2. We have 3 different lilac trees.  The one we cut back to about 4 ft and it grew really fast.  It needs cut back again.  The other ones are not as big and I think I am just going to cut maybe a foot or 2 off of them.  We have little shoots coming up everywhere around the 2 smaller ones.  I am trying to let them grow if hubby would quit running them over with the lawn mower.

  3. We have a huge rhododendron in the front of our house that we cut back.  It was almost touching the house.  We didn't want to do it but it needed done.  We just cut pieces of it at ground level and it work for us.  Never touched the front of it.  Now I have lilacs to do.

  4. I got this plant years ago and still don't know what it is.  I didn't think it would get any flowers(just thought it was a plain houseplant)  but it has been blooming for about 5 years.  It is beautiful and loves the window I have it in.

  5. VP....sprinkle them around now.  They will still grow.  When you think you are going to get nothing you notice little things coming up.  I know my first year they were late to come up but I did get them.  I got seeds off of a neighbor.  Now I have too many seeds and nowhere to plant them.

  6. I don't nick mine.  When the pods open, I just scatter the seeds around.  I have also done this in the fall.  The first year I planted, I learned not to pull up the whole plant.  I don't know about the bought seed packets.  I have always started my plants with seeds from the plant the following year.  You can just let the pods open wherever you plant them and they will replant themselves.

    1/2 cup shortening

Preheat oven to 375.  Grease 2 baking sheets.  Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.  In a large bowl; cream shortening and sugar.  Beat in the egg.  Beat in the almond extract.  Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.  Combine the almonds and cinnamon in a shallow dish.  Pinch off walnut sized pieces of dough and roll into balls.  Roll in the almond mixture and place 1 /12 inches apart on the baking sheets.  Bake for 10-12 minutes.  Place on rack to cool.

    These are very good.

  8. Nut Horns

    1 lb butter

    1 lb cream cheese

    4 1/2 cups flour

    powdered sugar

Cream butter and cream cheese.  Add flour gradually.  Cover and chill overnight.  Divide into thirds.  On powdered sugared surface, roll each portion to 12 1/2 X 10 in rectangle.  Cut into 2 1/2 in squares.  Place a dot of nut mixture or preserves in center of each square.  Bring up 2 diagonal corners to center of square and fold over.  Bake on ungreased cookie sheets in 350 degrees oven for 15-20 min.

    Nut Mixture

    1 cup brown sugar

    4 egg whites

    2 lb chopped walnuts

    1 cup sugar

    1 tsp vanilla

    1 can evaporated milk

A few tips:  This makes about 10 dozen cookies.  It is better if someone helps you because the dough will melt if it gets too warm.  I found a can lid that was the perfect size for cutting or maybe you have a square cookie cutter.  I use the baking fillings for other flavors like apricot or poppyseed.
