  1. I started giving our dog coconut oil after I read this article, he gets yeast infections and has allergies too, I am trying to find something so he does not have to be on steroids, antiobiotics all the time too.  I have only been doing giving him a tsp  a day for a week or two now, and he is a big puppy m(100# 2yrs old) so not sure if he is actually getting enough, I haven't tried  rubbing it into his skin yet, cause his "hot" spots (red, itchy) he never lets us get near.  I have noticed he is not scratching as much the last day or so.   But maybe you can try this.

With more and more Americans appreciating the fantastic flavor and health benefits of coconut oil

  2. I got some of that chex mix too, except I only had two coupons but I did get two bags free.  I wish I had that many coupons at once, I know I can buy some too on ebay and other places, I just have not done that yet, but I am going to soon.  But $1 a bag on that chex mix was an awsome price since it is regurlary $2.99-$3.19

Has anyone heard or seen the 52 Week Money Challenge.  I seen it on Pinterest and other places.

Each week you depost the amount of money for the corresponding week, such as week 1 depost $1, week 2 $2 and so on all the way to week 52, that week u deposit $52 dollars. and at the end of the year will of saved $1,378.00!!!!  My husband and I are doing this, this will be just week 5 for us, we are at the easy weeks now.  But after the year it will be a nice to see that we saved that up and who know what we will do with the $$$  We were thinking maybe new flooring for the living room but we will see then.

  3. This thread hasn't been updated in almost a year!   One of my fav places lately to coupon is at CVS.  Between sales with coupon match-ups and extrabucks rewards you can save some pretty good $$$$. An example, yesterday I paid $16.72, but my total before coupons & sales was $43.79.  Then on top of that I got $7 more in extrabuck rewards to use on my next purchase if I want, and they don't expire till end of Feb.   Anyone else with some good coupon stories, would luv to hear them.

  4. i started a couponing group on facebook where we trade coupons and share info on who has the best sales right now and who is doubling coupons, etc.

i just started using my coupons, i have not gotten anything free yet, but i have saved quite a bit.

what is the name of your facebook group?  I would like to check it out if that is ok.

  5. I foound one site  moneysavingmom   that has a lot of good info, & you can sign up for newsletter and they will show you different deals and the matching coupon that is available, and another one is the krazy coupon lady, she has lots of things too, you also can like both of these on fb if that is easier.  I got a good deal on Pepsi the other day,   a store had 6 pack of bottles for 4/10  had coupons for 2 off of 2 packs so I used 2 coupons taking 4 off of the 4 packs which made them 4 for 6 so i paid 1.50 a 6pack.   good deal since they usually run that for 1 2liter.

  6. I know this thread was started looong time ago for different ideas to make your own products..........basically the laundry soap recipe got this up and going I think, and I know many have started using the soap and other tips from here including me.  So now since this thread is also tips on money saving ideas how about we talk coupons .  With the craze of extreme couponing show, and I know lots of people in the area are huge couponers, maybe we can share hints and tips on that.  I do use coupons and I would like to do more, every penny counts in my opinion.  I try to save where I can so it opens up to many other possibilities in my life ( like taking vacations, sending kids to college, etc.).  What has been one of your best deals with coupons?  I know the other day, I had had coupons for soap,  a local store had them on sale for $1 each and my coupons were .40 which doubled to .80, so .20 each I paid, not free but not bad!    :exc:   Does anyone know of any coupon groups/clubs in the area?

  7. This is the recipe I used when my boys were babies.  I loved them.

    Step One

Strong paper towels work the best.

Cut one roll of paper towels in half.

    Step Two

    Make solution.

    2 cups water

    1/2 cup of baby oil

1/2 cup baby magic baby bath

    Step Three

Place 1/2 roll of paper towels in container.

Pour solution over towels. Once the towels have soaked up the solution it is easy to take out the core of towel then.

Store in container with lid.  Take the towel out from center first, it should pull out like wet ones do.

I used a container from tupperware that they called a pickle container.  It was just the right height, ( I never kept pickles in it so it didn't smell bad)  But any size like that works best, that way the towels are standing up.

  8. I found this recipe for fabric softner in the paper.  I made it and it works great too.......

    6 cups water

    3 cups vinegar

2 cups cheap hair conditioner (whatever scent you like)

Mix and store in a 1 gallon container.

I just used my old store bought fabric softner container.

Just give it a little shake before use, to make sure t it has not seperated.

  9. needed to clean my kitchen floor yesterday, so I used the Arma & Hammer washing soda that I bought for the laundry detergent. I just dissolved some in a bucket of warm water,  then I did wipe the floor with a solution of vinegar/water.  They both worked like a charm, and I was happy because I used items that I already had.

  10. I got this info in an email from a friend, thought it was worth passing on................

Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to

pick the little 'stringy things' off of it. That's how the primates do it.

Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store.

If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil.

It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating.

Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef.  It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of

spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in & then beat them up.

For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt  Andes  mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste

of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!!  Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummm!

      Reheat Pizza

Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on  the cooking channel and it really works.

      Easy Deviled Eggs

Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

      Expanding Frosting

When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer

for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes

with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.

      Reheating refrigerated bread

To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in

a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food

moist and help it reheat faster.

      Newspaper weeds away

Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers,

put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and for-

get about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not

    get through wet newspapers.

    Broken Glass

Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.

      No More Mosquitoes

Place a dryer sheet in your pocket.  It will keep the mosquitoes away.

      Squirrel Away!

To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper.   The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

    Flexible vacuum

To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

      Reducing Static Cling

Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt

or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose.

Place pin in seam of slacks and ... ta da! ... static is gone.

    Measuring Cups

Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water.

Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such

as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

    Foggy Windshield?

Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of

your car . When the window is foggy, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

      Reopening envelope

If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside,

just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals

    easily.

    Conditioner

Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and

leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you

bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.

      Goodbye Fruit Flies

To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar

and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the

    cup and gone forever!

    Get Rid of Ants

Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't

digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works  and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

    INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS

The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a  mesh material ... I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well ..... the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit.

You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your

clothes soft and static free ... that nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel

waxy when you take them out of the box ..... well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your  house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long  time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months.

He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?!

Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that.

    So, I thought I'd share!

Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it ... the water ran right through the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all!

That repairman knew what he was talking about!

  11. Air Fresheners/Deodorizers:

    1) Place cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice or other favorite scented spice in a pot of water , simmer for 1-2 hours

    2) Put a few slices of leftover orange or lemon rinds in a pot of water, simmer for 1-2 hours

    3) Place baking soda in an open container of your choice. Good for closets, refrigerators and other small enclosed spaces

    4) 2-3 slices of white bread absorbs refrigerator odors

    5) Place lemon slices in an open bowl in the kitchen

    6) Lemon and baking soda spray:

Dissolve baking soda in 2 cups hot water, add lemon juice, pour into spray bottle, spray into air as air freshener

    7) Place unscented kitty litter placed in bowls to absorb room odors

    8) Vinegar in a cup or bowl rids rooms of odors

    9) Charcoal placed in a bowl rids rooms of odors

    10) Simply light a match for a few moments or burn a candle (scented or unscented). The flame from either will "eat-up" bad smelling gases in the air

    11) Pour vanilla extract into a shallow dish and set in an out of the way place

    12) Spin-Fresh Bathroom Deodorizer

Add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil to the inside of the cardboard toilet tissue roll. With each turn, fragrance is released into the room.

  12. I have done this for years when my kitchen drain gets sluggish..

sprinkle some baking soda in the drain

next pour some vinegar down the drain   this will bubble up,

let that bubble a little and then run hot water into drain.

This has never failed me yet.

Once again, I use this when the drain starts to act sluggish, and if you do this on a regular basis, every couple of weeks, it should keep it nice and clear.

  13. i made some of the diswasher detergent and I like to say I am very pleased with that too!

This homemade stuff we are making is pretty neat, it works good and we are saving some money.  This day and age you have to do whatever you can, it is harder and harder to make ends meet. even compared to last year!

When my boys were babies, I use to make my own baby wipes, I don't remember what the ingredients are now, but I am sure it is posted on the net somewhere, I like them better than the store bpught ones.  I will have to go back and loolkk up the glass cleaner recipe and try that one.

Maybe we can start another forum for homemade cleaning recipes!

  14. I have been using it for about 4 days now and I am very pleased with it so far.  I have noticed that my sons work clothes have always had a certain smell, ( I call it the smell of swamp water) and I have never been able to get the smell quite completely out, but since using this homemade soap, I have not noticed it.  I just did  some of the clothes he wore last night and they smell just like clothes, not swampy!!!

  15. ok I just spent 1/2 my morning running around getting the ingredients for this laundry soap.

I had to go to wal mart so decided to get the stuff to make the homemade laundry soap  They only had the Borax, so I got that ,it was $2.84

Decided I will check Shop N Save for the rest, they didn't have any of it!

Went to Martins and they only had the Fels got that it was $1.56

Well I almost gave up then decided to go ahead and stop at Bi-Lo   and they only had the A & H Washing soda!!!  Good thing because that is all I needed.  It was $2.95

And the price of gas running all over to find the stuff.................priceless!!!

My hubby really wants to try this so I we are going to give it a shot.  I will do the same experiment to see how many loads I get, and I am betting I will get more and it will be cheaper...............hey it doesn't hurt to try right!
