  1. Thanks for all the ideas everyone ! Not even sure it's in DuBois. Could it be a funeral procession ? The house with the large chimney almost looks like the Hahne Mansion. Was there ever a house where the brewery was ???

  2. A friend of my son's found a copy of this pic in his garage. The garage is located in DuBois, but we do not have a clue where this picture might have been taken. Any guesses ??? Sorry, no prizes, just personal satisfaction !

  3. U.S. Marine Private James J. Patterson was the first person from the DuBois area to be killed in action

in World War 1 on June 6,1918 at Belleau Woods, France. The local James J Patterson VFW Post 813

in DuBois is named in his honor. James was a native of Helvetia and spent most of his life in DuBois

before enlisting in the Marines when he was 23 years old. James was only 24 years old when he was

killed in battle. Pictured are members of the DuBois Honor Guard placing a wreath at his grave to honor his service.

My congratulations to the RCPS for continuning this fine tradition. If I may point out however, the Honor Guard in this picture is in fact the James J. Patterson V.F.W. Post 813 Honor Guard and not the DuBois ( Area ) Honor Guard. Thanks again !

  4.    My dad did some side work for them at their two  transmitters in the late 70's. I haven't been to either one in years but their transmitter in Luthersburg has ( had ) their call letters above the front door . . . Rather large, I remember ! Might be worth looking into to see if the current owners would let someone ( maybe the Historical Society ) scout through the buildings ! the WCED FM letters would look great on a wall in the Hist. Society !

  5. Hipower,

We do not have any plans to sell lots for burials for several reasons.  First, Pa cemetery laws require that a substantial amount of money be in escrow of the Cemetery Company for perpetual so cemeteries do not get run down, as has happened so many times in the past. Secondly, the Rumbarger Cemetery Preservation Society was established to " Preserve, Protect, and maintain " Rumbarger cemetery, not to act as an active burial site. Finally, and perhaps most important and interesting . . . without knowing exactly where people might be buried ( horrible record keeping, graves moved, etc. ) we do not want to sell someone a lot and when their time comes and we dig them a grave find it is already occupied by someone . . .  or several someones ! Yes, rumors and urban myths from the past suggest that some previous owners of the Cemetery, manyyy years ago, might have sold the same lots to different people!.

Interesting fact though. If a person already owns a lot they are permitted to be buried there. So if you are driving by someday and see an excavator there, it'

is a possibility that a funeral is taking place !

hope that answers your question . . .

  6. Don't be mad at me Crazycat but I have to say, I stopped at Peaceable Kingdom today and there on the counter were 5 ornaments . . .  One each of The DuBois Mansion, DuBois High School, and St. Catherine's School . . . all sold out ornaments from the past! They were cleaning out their storage area and found them. Needless to say, since I needed them for my collection I bought them . . .  Merry Christmas to me ! The other two ornaments were ones that Lakeside U.M. Church put out a few  years ago. Very nice but not a part of the Downtown series. Hang in there Crazycat, another Mansion will turn up!

  7. For those of you that may have missed it, the Rumbarger Cemetery Preservation Society was awarded ownership of the Rumbarger Cemetery on September 21st, 2011 by Judge Ammerman  . . .  We now own the Cemetery and as president Truman said, " The buck stops here!". Good, bad, or otherwise we are now responsible for everything that happens at and to the Cemetery. . .  wish us luck and please help us out if and where you can!

  8. Ok, I have someone requesting I take a picture of a headstone they aren't even sure exists located in Rumbarger Cemetery.

Any one that cuts the grass up there...have you noticed a headstone for "Samuel B. Coyne" who died in 1906 ?? Or even a push in the right direction would be wonderful! Feel free to PM and thanks in advance!  :)

Monroe, Looking at our book of names that appear on headstones, there is a Samuel B. Coyne 1845-1906, Civil War Vet. Looks like he is in the front of the cemetery, off to the left...also under Coyne... Amelia, infant, R.F., William. Hope that helps!

  9. Has anyone checked with the county jail to see if you can get the inmates to help clean it up?

County jail is "stretched thin", not enough people to watch everyone. Have a call into Adult Probation, but one problem there is coordination... having someone at the Cemetery the same time the person on Probation is there... Can be done, just takes some work. Speaking from experience in years past, we have had more people   not show up than show up when they told us they would be there to do their service time. I don't mean to say that everyone is that way or we won't use it in the future, just that we can't rely on it to solve all our problems.

    Bluejay,

Here's our info, thanks for kicking the challenge off ! The removal of the trees was definitely filled with mixed feelings. As a wise person once said, "They are what brought John DuBois to this area! " but they were too big for the places they were in. Hopefully those are all that will be removed and the possibility does exist for more to be planted. You can also check us out at www.findagrave.com. Pictures of all the graves are posted so you'll be able to see your grandmother's. Don't forget about the GoDuBois workday at the Cemetery on Saturday, July 9th at 9. Hope to see everyone there! There should be someone there tomorrow ( at least for awhile ) if anyone wants to stop up and work, talk, or just walk around. Many thanks to everyone who has been working very hard keeping the grass under control. If you haven't been there for sometime, stop in. I think you will be very surprised at how it looks.

Thanks again Bluejay for your support!

  11. Whoever wants to put up money and erect a headstone, fine.  No one will. I would avoid a lot of flowers because they make it harder maintain with mowing, don't they?

Some people may not want a new stone, or even the old one fixed, but whose call is it? As for flowers, would be more work but if someone "adopts" that grave and takes responsibility ( and takes it seriously ) the the flowers won't be a problem/

    !

  12. Another problem we have is who is the "descendant" who gets to say what happens to great, great, whoevers grave? I want flowers there! No, I'm related to him too and I don't want flowers but we need to fix his headstone! I'm his second cousin once removed and I say his stone is fine! Any suggestions ???

  13.

Can't wait till I see what this cemetery really looks like as I never imagined it was eight acres.  Only thought it was just a small old cemetery along the highway.   Walls?  Wondering how big/long?   Will be very interesting to look @ the old tombstones, too.  I always find myself imagining life back then.

    Cando,

Look forward to seeing you there. How many other GoDuBoisers (Spelling???) do we have so far???

  14.

This is the main problem. Most people that are buried there families are also deceased and no one is left to care for their graves. The residents of this area need to come together to help out since no one owns the cemetery, there are no caretakers and not much interest from the public to help out. I wonder if the Jaycees, Lions, Kiwanis and Rotary would all have a work day. If one club, family, church, organization or person would spend 1 hour a week up there it would make a big difference. We all need to help out if you want this to be a reality. I'm shocked that the people that live around it have never helped either. If that was in my neighborhood I would go over and do what I can when I could.

    Gold,

That's what we'd like to do, get individuals, groups, co-workers, etc to take a week ( maybe you could have a group workday that week or you could stop by anytime that week and do what you could) but it's tough going. Trying a GoDuBois Day and how many people are able / wanting to make it? Organizations many times are made up of elderly people who want to help but can no longer mow or people who are busy with other activities.... We'll just keep looking!
