  1. Hi. This is not just 1 plant, is happening to several in that area. New canes coming up from root ball of semi-good, thorny, fruiting canes. Also, I do have current plants further down the fence line. Is definitely NOT currents. Somehow there are variation/defective raspberry canes.......
  2. Thanks for the response Lavender......... the canes I am referring to are both new (this year) and 2nd year canes from same wild black raspberries, from same roots as previous years black raspberries, and they have no thorns, no fruit and leaves even look little different. Have grown raspberries for several years now, so know they are different. Its just this one area that it is happening. Other black raspberry areas are ok.
  3. Hi. Are you sick of my questions yet??? lol Its 2am in the morning and I just got off work.... Ok, I have been growing brambles (raspberries and blackberries) for few years now, and basically have not been spraying them with anything ..... except trying Sevin a few years back. I think the berries came out a little deformed after that, so I did not do again. I have put some Miracle Grow on the bottom of the canes a few times ........ So, my question is........... what is a good spray treatment that I should consider for the best brambles? Is a regular 'fungicide' treatment recommended? If so, what fungicide? I do have a problem with some plants producing uneven berries, and some plants seem to have a problem where the berries have dry-brownish areas near the lowest part........ and also have noticed some red rust? on few of the plants in my 'wild black raspberry' area. I also have a problem in one area of my mostly wild raspberry area of my backyard where new canes come up that have no thorns, and produce no fruit. I have not done a soil analysis there but did PH test and it was about 6.7 Note that this is near an area of the lawn where there is moss where grass should be. I KNOW that is a problem with sunlight here. Could this be the main problem in this area????
  4. I have noticed for a few years now, in an area where I have maybe a total of 30 blackberry plants (have transplanted from several different places I have visited over the years (mostly golf courses), that maybe only 1/3 to 1/2 of the plants produce fruit. ........... Note that I follow the same procedure on all the plants. I cut down the 2 year old canes (brownish-dead canes) in the fall (or in early spring), so the new canes are only ones left. I live in upstate NY. Any opinions on the sweetest blackberry that will grow well in this area would also be welcome. I am considering Triple Crown, Ebony King, Kotatas, Marion, Chickasaw, or Chester. I planted some thornless blackberrys (from mail-order catalog) a few years back, and they are big and produce a lot of berries.......... BUT are sour!!!! I have a dilemma with those plants..... I hate to pull up-kill something that is producing so well!! So, I really want a good, sweet blackberry that can eat right off the vine, thorns or not. Thx. Bob
  5. I bought 3 yellow raspberries plants(Amber) last year from a mail order catalog.... and they have grown very well. This year, berries are developing........ BUT....... on a few canes that I believe were the YELLOW raspberries, I have seen 1 undeveloped RED colored raspberry and have picked 1 black raspberry!!! I will have to wait to see if actually get any YELLOW raspberries. Two questions..... since I do have black raspberry plants very near (within 20 feet) of these canes, could they be cross-breeding/pollinatiing? Also, how does Queen Anne YELLOW raspberries compare to Amber. From what I have seen online, looks like most reviews favor Queen Anne. Bob
  6. Thx lavender, your reply makes sense. I have a neighbor down the street whose redcaps I covet. It irritates me to see that he basically in last few years has let his beautiful berries rot on the canes. He did give me a few plants last year, which I am working on. ......... I have several of my own, but they don't do anywhere as good as his. Mine may be a different variety, but I have concluded that reason his does so much better is because they are in a location where they probably get about 8-10 hours of sun per day while mine only get 6-8 hours. Bob
  7. Can someone tell me why I often see wild raspberrys alongside the road or in some other off-the-easy-path place, growing bigger berries and looking better than my raspberrys which I do so much work with?
