RALEIGH, N.C. – On March 20, 2024, a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Robert Davis, a 67-year-old naturalized citizen of the United States, born in Malaysia, with naturalization fraud.
According to the indictment, on May 9, 2017, Davis fraudulently obtained U.S. citizenship by making a false statement under oath regarding his naturalization application. In response to the question “Have you ever committed, assisted in committing, or attempted to commit, a crime or offense for which you were not arrested?” he answered “no.” He also denied having ever forced anyone to have sexual contact or sexual relations.
On Feb. 2, 2024, in the Superior Court of North Carolina in Guilford County, Davis was convicted of indecent acts with a child and attempted first-degree sexual offense. Davis confessed to having committed the crimes between Jan. 30, 2004 and Dec. 30, 2005. The victim was a 5-year-old girl. Davis was sentenced to more than 16 years of imprisonment, in part because of a prior federal conviction in 2021 for possessing child pornography in the Middle District of North Carolina which resulted in a 14-year prison sentence.

  5. LOCAL LUTHERAN YOUTH ATTEND YOUTHQUAKE!

Front row left to right:  Rev. Amy Godshall-Miller and Debbie Finalle; back row left to right: Ansen Armagost, Drew London, Grace Prontock, Lief Galland, Virginia Myers and Lilly Phillips.

Faith, service and music were all a part of the experience for six young people and three adults representing Christ Lutheran Church, DuBois, at Youthquake!. The event, for students in grades six to twelve, is sponsored by Life Promotions.

“The theme was Breathe,” said Rev. Amy Godshall-Miller, pastor at Christ Lutheran. “Events focused on today’s busy youth taking time out to pray, worship, and read the Bible. It was good for the kids to get away like this for a weekend.”

Approximately 200 people participated in Youthquake!, held at the Marriott Pittsburgh Airport, Coraopolis. It builds a weekend experience that makes faith come alive for youth. The regional events partner with youth leaders in local churches to help teens become established in their faith, empowered for Christian living and enabled to live a life of ministry and leadership.

The youth and guests representing Christ Lutheran were:  Virginia Myers, Lilly Phillips, Ansen Armagost, Grace Prontock, Drew London, and Lief Galland, who is from Pittsburgh. Drew London celebrated his birthday while attending Youthquake!. Adults accompanying the student were:  Godshall-Miller, Debbie Finalle, and Penny Prontock.

“This brough back memories for me,” said Godshall-Miller. “When I was a just starting in ministry I attend for many years when it was known as the Lutheran Youth Encounter. I saw our young people build memories and friendships. They had a great time. They are ready to go again and talked about who they would invite next year.”

The weekend was filled with speakers, music, and workshops. Workshops included packing food for Orphan Grain Train, God, Games and Geekery and talking about tough issues from a Christian perspective. Each day started and ended with what was called family time, when all of the members of the group gathered together.

Pastor Bill Yonker, Senior Pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Dundee, Illinois, a large suburban congregation with a large school, was the keynote speaker. He travels around the country between 18 to 20 weekends a year speaking at Christian conferences, retreats, high schools, middle schools and college campuses.

Lloyd Garrelts and Todd Miller two of the four members of the Christian band Echelon provided the music for the event. Echelon formed in 1994 and performed together for many years with the purpose of “making Christ known as friend and Savior through music and personal relationships.” After the team years, the members of Echelon remained active in Youth Encounter, by assisting with team training.

Christ Lutheran will hold a summer mission trip for youth from sixth to twelfth grades and all adults from June 16-19. They will travel to the NALC National Disaster Response Warehouse and Retreat Center in Caldwell, Ohio, where they will work in the warehouse and provide help for families in crisis in Caldwell.

  9. Do you know the five food groups?

March is Nutrition Month, which is the perfect time to take a closer look at something you probably learned in school years ago but may not have thought about recently: the five food groups

Depending on your age, you may have been taught about the food groups using the Food Wheel, Food Guide Pyramid or MyPyramid. Today, the USDA’s MyPlate is used to teach nutrition in school. As the name suggests, MyPlate is an icon that shows a plate divided into five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy.

Each group plays an important role in healthy eating. Groups are comprised of a range of foods that are similar in nutritional makeup, with some of the food groups being divided into subgroups emphasizing foods that are good sources of certain vitamins and minerals.

    Fruit
Fruits give you nutrients that are vital for your body, such as fiber, vitamin C, potassium and folate. Dietary fiber from fruits may also help reduce cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease. The fruit group includes two subgroups: whole fruit and fruit juice.

“We recommend that most of your fruit intake is whole fruit rather than fruit juice,” said Karen Pritts, MS, RDN, CDCES, LDN, Director of Clinical Nutrition and Diabetes at Penn Highlands Mon Valley. “One serving of fruit juice contains much more sugar than one serving of whole fruit. Whole fruit, including frozen fruits, are a good source of fiber which can help reduce cholesterol and lower the risk for heart disease.”

    Vegetables

Vegetables are another important source of nutrients such as potassium, which may help maintain blood pressure, and vitamin A, which keeps your eyes healthy and protects against infections.

“Vegetables make up the biggest portion of the MyPlate icon, which means vegetables should also make up the biggest portion of your plate,” said Karen.

The vegetable group has several subgroups: dark green vegetables (broccoli, spinach), red and orange vegetables (carrots, red peppers), starchy vegetables (white potatoes, corn, peas) and other vegetables (mushrooms, avocados). Fresh and frozen vegetables are the best choices for nutrients and fiber over those that are canned.

    Grains

People who eat grains regularly may have a reduced risk of some diseases. Many grains are enriched with B vitamins, which help the body release energy from protein, fat and carbohydrates.

Grains can be divided into whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains have the entire grain kernel, which includes the bran, germ, and endosperm, while refined grains have been milled in a process that removes the bran and germ. Grains are milled to produce a finer texture and improve shelf life, but the milling process removes dietary fiber, iron and many B vitamins, which is why nutritionists recommend eating more whole grains and less refined grains.

Whole grains include whole-wheat flour, oatmeal and brown rice. Refined grains include white flour, white bread and white rice

    Protein

Proteins are building blocks for bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, blood, enzymes, hormones and vitamins. Most Americans get the right amount of protein from meat, poultry and eggs, but many Americans do not get the recommended amount of protein from seafood, nuts and seeds. You should eat a variety of proteins to get the nutrients your body needs. Dried beans and peas (lentils, kidney beans, navy beans) are also an excellent source of protein and fiber.

When eating meat and poultry, choose lean or low-fat options, such as 93% lean ground beef, pork loin and skinless chicken breasts. Good seafood options include those that are high in healthy fatty acids, such as salmon, anchovies and trout.

    Dairy

About 90% of Americans do not get enough dairy in their diet. Dairy helps build bones and teeth and keep them strong, especially in children and adolescents. As you age, dairy promotes bone health and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.

The dairy group includes milk, yogurt, cheese, lactose-free milk, calcium-fortified soy, almond and oat milk and yogurt. Foods such as cream cheese, sour cream, cream and butter are not part of the dairy group because they have little calcium and a high fat content. When shopping for dairy products, look for fat-free and low-fat options.
