  1. I also have them and they are like bushes. The nuts are plentiful but we do not eat them. We are planning on pulling them out sometime. My dad planted them many years ago and even when we were kids we never ate them. The squirrels and birds get to enjoy them.
  2. I live right up the road from Sher De Lin Game Farm. I grew up beside it. I was pretty young when it closed, but I remember a couple of the times they called my mom to tell her the buffalo had gotten out and to keep us in the house. He would call and let her know when he was back in the fenced area. I loved the monkeys that he had down there. They were my favorite. The peacocks were gorgeous but the monkeys were different.
  3. WAs the DuBois Hotel where the old Courier Express used to be down town? Across from whats now the St michaels Towers.
  4. I usually plant Celebrity, Rutgers and Roma's. WE mostly eat ours in salads and sliced up. WE make Luigi's tomato salad out of the roma's. My daughter works there and makes it all the time. Cannot wait to eat it with fresh tomaotes!!!!
  5. Thanks for the advice. Our leaves haven't opened yet, so maybe we will try to prune a few of the lower branches this spring. Next fall, 2009, do some of the upper branches. Our pear trees are in full blossom already, so they will need to wait.
  6. Does anyones know if it will hurt to still prune our apple trees this spring? I heard you should only prune in the fall. We do not really harvest to many of them and they have not been prunied for 10 years or so. My dad never pruned them and we bought my parents home 5 years ago. I wouldn't want to kill off the trees or do any major long term damage.
  7. I make elder berry jelly. My Mom made it when I was a child and I have been making it for my children for almost 20 years. I do make sure to use cheesecloth to get out all of the tiny seeds. To be honest, I have never had them in a pie only jelly. My son also loves pear jelly but my pear trees did not produce enough this year. I may have to buy enough for at least one batch. Last year was a good year for my pear trees and I have about 20 jars left. But I didn't get a sinlge batch of wild raspberry done last year. This year the raspberries were plentiful and not the pears.
  8. I have canned 18 qts. and 16 pints of tomatoes, 16 qts. of pickled beets, 12 pints of hot pepper relish, 39 jelly jars of wild black raspberry jelly, and I am making sweet relish tomorrow night after work. I didn't pick my elder berries this year becuase I have 23 jars left from last year that need to be used. Hopefully, I will be done canning after tomorrow night.
