  3. 324 salmonella infections linked to pet chicks, ducklings since January Salmonella 101: What you need to know CNN HEALTH NEWS, JUNE 2, 2016(CNN) --------- Seven outbreaks of salmonella linked to live poultry in backyard flocks have caused 324 cases of illness in 35 states since January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. Sixty-six of the ill individuals have been hospitalized. One person has died, although salmonella was not a factor in the death, the agency said. Health investigators have interviewed 238 of those who became sick and found most of them had contact with live fowl at home, school and work in the week before their symptoms began. Some of them also said they bought live baby poultry from several suppliers in multiple states. Those include feed supply stores, co-ops, hatcheries and friends, according to the outbreak summary issued Thursday "Results from these investigations showed that contact with live poultry in backyard flocks was the likely source of these outbreaks," the agency said. Symptoms of salmonella infection include abdominal cramps, fever and sudden onset diarrhea that can last for several days. Nausea, vomiting and headaches may also occur. Most people get better on their own after about five to seven days, although fluids are sometimes needed to treat dehydration. Children under age 5 are most likely to become ill from exposure to the bacteria. Eighty-eight of the illnesses announced Thursday were in children age 5 or younger. The youngest case was in a child under a year old. Adults over age 65 and those with compromised immune systems are also at an increased risk for illness from salmonella. The oldest ill individual from this group of outbreaks is 92. Read More The agency is working with the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and state public health, veterinary and agriculture officials to investigate the seven separate outbreaks. All live poultry can carry salmonella, the CDC said, even if the birds look clean and healthy. "The germs can also get on cages, coops, hay, plants and soil in the area where the birds live and roam. People, especially children, can be exposed to salmonella by holding, cuddling or kissing the birds and by touching things where the bird lives, such as cages or feed and water bowls," the CDC said. Therefore, consumers are advised to wash their hands well with soap and water after touching birds or anything that they have been in contact with. Parents and caregivers should supervise children under age 5 whenever they are touching these animals. The CDC also recommends against letting the animals come inside homes. "These outbreaks are expected to continue for the next several months since flock owners might be unaware of the risk," the CDC said. 14. Some companies letting employees take off work after pet dies Erica Lee's dog Chief with her son. CBS Miami MIAMI, MARCH 14, 2016(CBS)-------- -- The loss of a pet can be devastating. And for some, it can be hard to imagine trying to go back to work right away after suffering that loss. Now some companies are coming up with a solution for that: pet bereavement days. CBS Miami reports, that when Erica Lee lost her beloved dog "Chief" words could not describe the amount of pain that she felt. Pet owner Erica Lee. CBS Miami "Chief was the best dog ever. He was very sweet, loving. I was heartbroken," she said. Lee's company allowed her to take a day off to regroup, and to help her son understand the tremendous loss. "Being able to stay home with him and grieve with him was invaluable. It was so, so important to me," she said. Though pet bereavement days aren't required under federal or state laws, several national companies are now allowing mourning pet owners to take time off to grieve. Software company VM Ware and Maxwell Health gives employees flexible days off. Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants allows managers to grant up to three days away from work, and pet insurance company Trupanion gives employees one paid pet bereavement day. "We allow people to actually do that grieving process and just, just be able to heal. I think you need closure when you lose a pet, and it's important to have the time to do that," Dani Kahn, Trupanion said. With 30 percent of pet owners surveyed saying they felt grief and sadness for at least six months after losing an animal, pet loss counselor Janet Zimmerman said it's critical that they take time off, CBS Miami reports. "It's really very, very difficult to function, and if you can't function, you certainly can't function at work, and you're really not the person you were before. You need the time to get back to some sense of normality," she said. Some question where to draw the line. If it's okay to allow time off for the death of a dog or a cat, what about a fish or a reptile? Lee said she's thankful for the time she had to grieve and the support she had from her employer. "This should absolutely be the norm for many businesses if not all," she said. Pets are clearly part of the family for many of us. Studies show people experience the same numbness, shock, disbelief, guilt, and anger as they would if a person died. Most grieving pet owners need a few days to a week to deal with the initial shock.
